SALFORD TO BENEFIT AS SUPREME COURT ORDERS GOVERNMENT TO TACKLE ILLEGAL LEVELS OF AIR POLLUTION

UK SUPREME COURT ORDERS CLEANER AIR
 
The UK's Supreme Court today ordered the Government to develop a new plan to tackle illegal levels of air pollution, after a five year legal battle by ClientEarth. Salford has the joint highest level of deaths in Greater Manchester association with air pollution.

Manchester Friends of the Earth campaigner Pete Abel says: "The Government has now been instructed by the Supreme Court to come up with an urgent action plan to stop people choking on dirty air and end this national disgrace."

DISGUST AT SALFORD MAYOR AS SERVICE USERS WALK OUT OF PUBLIC HEALTH CUTS MEETING

Salford Mayor Ian Stewart was the target for the fury of service users this morning as they stormed out of a Salford City Council Cabinet meeting, disgusted that their views were being ignored.

The Cabinet was discussing plans to cut £1.6million from the Health Improvement Service, and following a protest outside, people went into the Cabinet meeting to hear what councillors and the Mayor had to say. But they walked out after handing over a petition which Stewart, at first, refused to accept... "It's not fair and it's about time Salford people got heard – not the rich, the poorer ones", said Anne, a service user.

SALFORD TUSC UNVEILS ELECTION HOARDING AND SLAMS LABOUR’S HOUSING POLICY

Last night, Salford TUSC unveiled its election hoarding in Walkden, as Worsley and Eccles South candidate Steven North slammed the Labour Party's housing policies which, he said "falls far short of what's needed to solve the desperate and snowballing housing crisis."

TUSC also held a lobby of Labour Council last Friday outside the Civic Centre to mark the end of transport for individual disabled adults in the city..."I'm disgusted" said TUSC local election candidate Norma Parkinson-Green

Tomorrow, Salford Council's Cabinet meets to slash £1.616million from the Health Improvement Service, stating that it will have no impact on the community. Indeed, there's not even a community consultation on the cards.

A public meeting last week heard how older people, those with mental health issues, struggling families and more will be hit. Now a lobby of the Cabinet has been called for tomorrow morning, urging a public consultation before any decision is made.

MANCHESTER HOMELESS CAMP TO STAY UNTIL THE END

ALBERT SQUARE HOMELESS CAMP TO STAY UNTIL EVICTION

Following Friday's County Court hearing, which granted Manchester City Council a possession order on a technicality, residents of the Manchester Homeless Camp say that they will stay until the bitter end to raise awareness of homelessness... "We're trying our best to achieve what we want to do in the short time we've got left to do it" says Scott, from Salford. 

Bailiffs are expected at the Camp on Monday or Tuesday, although solicitors are trying to launch an appeal against the order.

The blockbusting book, Blacklisted: The secret war between big business and union activists, is being launched at the Kings Arms in Salford this Friday 1st May, 6pm, with its co-author Dave Smith, and the Assistant General Secretary of Unite Gail Cartmail.

The book documents the illegal and secret blacklisting of trade unionists in the construction industry by corporations with collusion of the police and secret services. As Dave Smith states, "It is no longer an industrial relations issue: it is a human rights issue".

£950MILLION WEALTH OF FRED AND PETER DONE WHO DON’T PAY SALFORD COUNCIL PLANNING FEES

SUNDAY TIMES RICH LIST PUTS SALFORD'S FRED AND PETER DONE SIXTH IN NW

The Sunday Times Rich List, out this Sunday, puts Salford brothers Fred and Peter Done as the sixth wealthiest people in the North West, and 108th in the country, worth £950million; up £50million from last year. The brothers recently evaded paying Salford Council £1.2million in planning fees and providing 76 affordable homes because their company, FICM, said it couldn't afford it.

Meanwhile, the John Whittaker family, which owns Peel Holdings, comes second in the wealth list for the North West, worth £2,370million, up £70million from last year. More austerity anyone?

KIDS SAFETY PROTEST SEES ROAD BLOCKED IN BOOTHSTOWN

Parents and children this morning blocked the road in the Moorings Estate in Boothstown in protest at Countryside Properties' building activities which have led to people fearing for their safety.

"This is about the complete failure of Salford City Council" said Charlotte Cooper of the Moorings Estate Residents Society "...ignoring the wishes of residents, agreeing planning conditions that are unenforceable and now walking away and leaving residents to deal with the developer directly." They certainly did that this morning, as police were called to deal with the protest.

Members of Salford University's UCU trade union were on strike today in protest against the sacking of two workers in the marketing department. Picket lines were posted on most University entrances, with loads of passing rush hour cars beeping their horns in support.

"I'm here because I'm homeless and had to flee my home through violence" Joanne from Salford.

Manchester City Council is facing a human rights challenge to its possession order on the Homeless Camp at Albert Square, when the case goes back to Manchester County Court next week.

In a bizarre twist, Manchester Council is trying to evict homeless people from its land, who it actually has a duty of care to re-home... "I think they should come up with a better solution" says homeless Salfordian Scott, who has joined the protest.

Last night, candidates standing for the Blackley and Broughton seat in the upcoming General Election gathered for a Question Time style debate at St Paul's Church in Kersal. With deprivation and doom massive in the constituency it should have led to some political fireworks but instead fizzled out into a rather dull affair, with the Tory candidate not turning up at all.

They were asked their views on subjects like fracking, the economy, refugees and the bus service but passion was left at the door...

Salford teenager, Ethan Evans, who has raised over £15,000 in the last two years for charities including St Ann's Hospice and the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, has been given an award himself, as the winner of the first Creamline: Cream of the Community award.

Ethan, who has also collected loads of food for the Salford Food Bank, received a £500 prize to be given to the charity of his choice, Asthma UK.

Today, over four hundred events around the world are taking place in protest at the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership or TTIP, an agreement currently being negotiated between the EU and USA which campaigners say would massively increase corporate power, promote the privatisation of public services and strip countries of important environmental, labour and consumer protections.

In Salford, an early morning awareness raising event by TUSC took place outside Salford Royal Hospital to draw attention to the peril the NHS could be under through TTIP.

Campaigning for the Local and General Election moved up a gear today, with Bez and Mags McNally launching a new billboard on Chapel Street for the We Are The Reality Party, now backed by Paul Massey; and Salford TUSC candidates urging people to join them outside Salford Royal Hospital tomorrow at 9am as a part of a national day of action against the TTIP privatisation treaty.

Meanwhile, the Robin Hood Tax campaign is asking voters to tell their candidates to back the Tax, while Uprising is urging anyone who hasn't registered to vote to do so within the next three days. There are also chances to grill the candidates in Walkden and Eccless tomorrow.

Blears is one of three Member-Nominated Directors, whose election is to be approved at the Co-op's Annual Meeting in May... "Co-operative values and principles have been central to my life and work" she states. But her nomination has already run into controversy.

SALFORD COUNCIL SLASHES BUDGET FOR AT RISK BABIES AND TODDLERS

STAFF TO BE AXED AND CHILDCARE BUDGET FOR VULNERABLE BABIES AND TODDLERS SLASHED IN £151,000 CUTS

Following last year's cuts of over £1million to Sure Start Children's Centres in Salford, the Council is proposing to slash another £151,000 from this year's budget, with 3.5 Children's Centre staff posts to be axed and £50,000 cut for childcare for the most vulnerable babies and toddlers in the city; those who are at risk of harm. 

Childcare workers state that the new budget will "not even meet the need for the children who are receiving high level specialist services". Salford Council's Assistant Children's Mayor, John Merry, says he is "quite happy" with the proposals.

Salford is going to be at the centre of a global campaign against poverty pay, with a protest outside McDonald's head office, off The Crescent, at noon on Wednesday 15th April.

Fast Food Rights is a worldwide `Hungry For Justice' movement calling for £10 an hour pay, no zero contracts and union rights for food workers and all low paid people... "We'll be targeting McDonald's globally as they're one of the main companies that have low pay and exploitative terms and conditions of employment" says Ian Hodson, president of the Food Workers Union BFAWU.

Wesley PP Hall, a campaigner for the homeless in Manchester was on a shortlist of twenty people to ask a question to party leaders taking part in the ITV debate at MediaCityUK tonight. Then he got a call saying that Greater Manchester Police had banned him from taking part.

Wesley told the Salford Star that he was going to ask questions on homelessness and austerity.
