SWINTON RESIDENTS WIN VICTORY AGAINST BELLWAY HOMES AT SALFORD COUNCIL MEETING

Star date: 20th December 2018

SALFORD PLANNING COUNCILLORS REJECT LATEST BELLWAY HOMES APPLICATION

This afternoon, after a ninety minute debate, Salford planning panel councillors rejected an application by Bellway Homes for a sales office at its contentious housing site on Campbell Road in Swinton, as it would cause a severe impact on local residents.

"It was a victory of sorts" said Carol Boyce of Saving Our Neighbourhood "... because if they would have allowed that level of debate for the actual original application it would never have been passed."

STRANGE HEADLINES AND CUTS QUOTAS AT SALFORD CITY COUNCIL

Star date: 19th December 2018

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL CUTS CONFUSION - £15MILLION, £13MILLION OR £5MILLION?

This week, Salford Council boldly issued a press release headlined that it was 'planning for £15.2million budget proposals', ie cuts. But elsewhere on its website it states that "This target has been reduced to £13.06million", as it lists around £8million of 'one off savings, alternative funding, further efficiencies and increased income'...

...This leaves just over £5million of cuts that the Council is actually consulting residents on...including a 10p increase in school meals charge and the closure of a children's home, although it doesn't state which one. It's all very confusing, with very little detail and the Council announcing that these aren't even "final proposals".

Yet vulnerable people who have fallen through Andy Burnham's 'A Bed Every Night' net are being supported here by rough sleepers teams and grass roots outreach workers...

"We want to bring more people into this building because while we've got it we feel that we're saving people's lives" says Angela Barratt of Salford Street Support "The Salford community has been fabulous with us."

"Saturday is the day for reminding Bellway that we have every right to peaceful assembly on a public footpath..."

Two weeks ago, Bellway Homes' solicitors wrote to the Saving Our Neighbourhood campaign - which is objecting to the company's mad construction of 241 houses off Campbell Road in Swinton - threatening injunctions and fines unless it wrote an 'undertaking' not to "interfere and/or attempt to interfere with Bellway's legitimate commercial interests".

In response, tomorrow at noon, residents will hold a special Santa protest at the site entrance..."It's vital that our community makes it clear that a threat from a multi-billion pound developer...will not scare us into signing away our democratic legal rights" states the group.
