MANCHESTER TOWN HALL STORMED IN HOMELESS PROTEST

Star date: 15th April 2015 SALFORD JOINS MANCHESTER HOMELESS PROTEST Salford group Coffee4Craig and the Salford We Are The Reality Party joined a Greater Manchester wide Homeless Action March this afternoon, which ended in the storming of Manchester Town Hall in protest at austerity and the lack of action on homelessness. "We're supporting this march, saying `Homelessness in 2015? What's all that about? Why?'" explained Fie Lancaster of Salford's Coffee4Craig, at the start of this afternoon's Homeless Action March, organised by a variety of groups including Anonymous. Over one hundred people gathered at Piccadilly Gardens at the start of the March to watch a punky drumming band and to hear speakers Bez - from the Salford We Are The Reality Party - and Wesley PP Hall - who was banned from the televised Leaders Debate at Media City on the advice of the police (see here) - rail against the injustice of homelessness. "We're on the homeless march because if we get a seat we intend to deal with issues around homelessness which has grown fifty per cent in the last year" Mags McNally, We Are The Reality Party candidate for Worsley and Eccles South, told the Salford Star. "The Government is doing nothing to help, so people are coming together and doing it themselves" she added "The Conservative Party said when they got in that they would address the issue but it's grown. It's an important issue for us, and it's gone huge right across the UK." From Piccadilly Gardens campaigners marched to Manchester Town Hall and some stormed a side entrance, forcing security guards to retreat to inner doors before the police arrived and some kind of calm was restored. Some campaigners got into the Town Hall, others made their way to the front entrance shouting anti-austerity slogans. | I saw no violence at all.
But it would have been deserved.
People are very pissed off with how rotton councils like Manchester and Salford try to pretend homeless is not a problem by ignoring it .
They should be attempting to end the disgrace of homelessness in our cities.
But they would rather ignore the problem ,.
After all , why should the council rats care .
They continue to rape the taxpayer and call it wages.
No austerity for them .
Austerity just for us .
Well I got a message for the arrogant council rats .
Your time is up.

| I was there & I've not seen any reports about minors being harmed by the police or the fact some police officers actually pushed people down steps & strangling people where's the newspaper reports about that? |

| Dear Fie, We are keen to know what violence that you witnessed on the steps at Manchester Town Hall. We were there and the protest was peaceful. The main people on the front line were women and young girls challenging the council to come and talk to us about the issue of homelessness and their strategy for dealing with this crisis. As Council tax payers in a democratic country we feel strongly that the council and government should address this urgently not be making further cuts to funding for homelessness and mental health. After the march, food and hot drinks were made available to the homeless and clothes and bedding donated by the public distributed to those sleeping rough. People said they felt supported and safe to sleep during the night long vigil outside the town hall.One of the local Chinese resturants even donated hot food to the many rough sleepers at the end of the night. |

| Well done to everyone, I couldn't think of a better cause. I have travelled to countries littered with the homeless where they are literally treated like trash. They are not trash, they are people who need a lot of care, especially the most vulnerable with mental health problems. If everyday people don't help, then who will? |

| Manchester - today we witnessed what could of been a peaceful demonstration of how we would like to express our disapproval of the current political state when it comes to the homeless crisis. What could have been peaceful erupted into unnecessary and uncalled for violence against front-line staff who were merely doing their job to the best of their ability given their restrictions and abilities. The forced occupation of the historical Town Hall building in our opinion was unnecessary and we do not support this kind of behaviour. The Homeless Assessment Team are actually located within the new building not the one that was forcibly stormed by a minority intent on violence & disruption therefore losing the peaceful message that was intended to be delivered.
We had become aware of requests and witnessed today that members of the public were attending out of their own goodwill to donate tinned food and bedding to the homeless community, We witnessed them not being distributed as necessary as this was completely un-organised nor co-ordinated with any homeless agency and unnecessarily wasted.
So please, this situation does need support, we do have a homeless crisis and we would urge you to co-ordinate with an agency or charity that can distribute to foodbanks. Duvets, bedding, tents are all needed in hostels and they distributed to the people that need them the most and not wasted in this way.
We would strongly advise all members of the public wanting to support the homeless cause in our cities and nationwide to please support local agencies and charities.
As well as our Salford and Manchester based food bank & street kitchen running 3 times a week from Piccadilly Gardens, where we always need support with food, drinks, non perishable items and milk etc... The agencies below are the ones that we work with most closely, setting high standards in support and care for the homeless community and those in need.

Myriad Foundation. Street Kitchen on Piccadilly, Wednesday. Hot food and clothing.
Humanity Giving Back. Street Kitchen on Piccadilly, Friday. Hot food and clothing.
Pankhurst Centre (off Grafton Street) Working with women in need/domestic violence issues. drop in and hot food, food bank.
Barakah Food Aid Food bank and delivering food to people on the street
Mad Dogs Street Project Chorlton based homeless project.
Breakfast in Bed Street life project. Delivering hot breakfast to rough sleepers. Coffee, tea & Bacon rolls.
Lancaster House Salford based hostel housing 41 single men. Clothes, food and bedding.
There are so many great agencies and projects out there that need support and will make sure that the items you donate so kindly, get to the right people.
Please please support the organisations operating on the streets that have links with the bigger charities and organisations that will put your donations to good use. smile emoticon
