SALFORD ELECTION HOTS UP WITH HUSTINGS, BEZ, NHS AND ROBIN HOOD

SALFORD GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGNS MOVE UP A GEAR

Campaigning for the Local and General Election moved up a gear today, with Bez and Mags McNally launching a new billboard on Chapel Street for the We Are The Reality Party, now backed by Paul Massey; and Salford TUSC candidates urging people to join them outside Salford Royal Hospital tomorrow at 9am as a part of a national day of action against the TTIP privatisation treaty.

Meanwhile, the Robin Hood Tax campaign is asking voters to tell their candidates to back the Tax, while Uprising is urging anyone who hasn't registered to vote to do so within the next three days. There are also chances to grill the candidates in Walkden and Eccless tomorrow.

This afternoon, another huge billboard was unveiled on Chapel Street for the We Are The Reality Party by Salford and Eccles candidate, Bez, and Worsley and Eccles South candidate Mags McNally. Paul Massey, who stood in the last Salford Mayoral election, also showed up to back the Reality Party...

"He got in touch the other day because he wants to run for Mayor again, and I told him about setting up community projects involved with schools and he liked what I was saying" Bez explained "He's going to rally what people he can in Salford to vote for me, anybody's welcome to help. Some people I've spoken to have said `We've got to vote Labour to get rid of the Conservatives' which I find really disappointing because it was actually Labour that created the whole problem that we're facing today.

"I try to tell people that we've got to end this two party politics; if we don't move away from it we're in trouble" he added "A lot of people are voting Reality, particularly first time voters, but how well we do we'll see on the day. I'm sending messages up to the heavens daily for help! There's three weeks left so anyone who is concerned about the implications of fracking and the corporate takeover via TTIP needs to make their voices heard. This is the last chance to do it, to collectively make a difference..."

The Reality Party also takes its message to Swinton Shopping Centre tomorrow afternoon, Saturday 18th April, and will be appearing, along with other parties standing in the General Election at Question Time style events for Worsley and Eccles South, at the Ellesmere Centre, off Bolton Road in Walkden 11am-2pm (Labour MP Barbara Keeley has pulled out of this event) and, for Salford and Eccles, at St Mary's RC Church Hall, Eccles 1:30-3pm (see here for further details)

Meanwhile, TUSC (Trade Union and Socialist Coalition) is urging people to join its candidates as part of a national day of action against the TTIP privatisation treaty, this Saturday 18 April, 9am outside Salford Royal on Eccles Old Road. The TTIP, or Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, is a proposed deal between the EU and the USA, being conducted in secret, which will open up British public services to American multinationals (for further details see here).

"This TTIP treaty has been cooked up in the backrooms by politicians and their big business puppet masters" says Steven North, TUSC candidate for Worsley and Eccles South "Its design is to give American multinationals the ability to grab huge profits from public services."

TUSC candidate for Salford and Eccles, Noreen Bailey, adds: "TTIP puts profits first and people last. Our NHS is already being butchered in the name of privatisation, TTIP will make that a thousand times worse and it is hospitals like Salford Royal that could close as a result."

Sitting in the middle of the election is the non-party political Robin Hood Tax campaign, urging voters to call for their candidates to back the Tax, taking money off financial transactions to pay for essential services "We want would-be MPs to openly state their support so that billions can be raised for public services and the fight against poverty and climate change" it states "It only takes a minute and could make all the difference in delivering a Robin Hood Tax in the next Parliament." Click here to do this or find out more details.

With only three days left to register to vote, UpRising Manchester, which supports democratic engagement for youth, is campaigning to encourage young people to register.

"Our aim is to get as many people to register to vote through our web page as possible before the deadline of the 20th April" the campaign states "Then, our aim is to encourage as many young people as possible to take action and turn out to the ballot boxes on the 7th May.

"Only 44% of young people registered to vote between the ages of 18 and 24 and actually voted at the 2010 General Election" it adds "Changes to the way in which we register to vote mean that now, more than ever, young people are even more likely to slip through the net of registering, and therefore having their voices heard. At a time when key priorities are being outlined by parties in the build-up to the General Election, it is vital that young people's voices are heard to ensure that they have a say on the issues that affect and matter most to them."

The tusc, the party that campaigned out side the ukip office in Rotherham when just down the road was a load of labour councillors who turned a blind eye to the rape of white school girls in that town for 16 years, now the tusc support another party that supports a notorious convicted criminal, two parties, one supports criminals the other supports child rapists, do you really want to put your cross next to these two parties, avoid like the plague.

@rottenlabour you will find that Labour turned up at BOTH hustings events. Did you even bother to go? You will find that Bez didn't bother turning up...probably too busy drinking special brew in the northern quarter! What a joke! @salfordstar are you not going to amend your article to inform your readers that Barbara Keeley DID attend the hustings?

Bez was bad enough. But but now Paul Massey. The powers that be wanted to abolish this constituency. I can understand why now. If the Reality Party get a substantial vote then whoever forms the government should abolish this rotten borough straightaway. The vote is essentially wasted on some folks.

Bez has just lost my vote for being involved with the ex convict Paul Massey who seriously wounded a friend of mine and went to prison because of it. By involving Massey Bez has shown serious lack of judgement,.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
