SALFORD CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED FOR LOCAL AND GENERAL ELECTION

TUSC AND GREENS BIGGEST ALTERNATIVE SALFORD PARTIES AS LIBDEMS BECOME GHOST PARTY

Anti-cuts party, TUSC (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) is fielding the largest number of alternative candidates in the local elections this year, standing in all twenty seats, while the Green Party has candidates up for election in 18 seats. The LibDem Party, once the main threat to the ruling Labour Party, has become a ghost of its former self, standing in just three seats.

The biggest surprise in the list of candidates standing in the local election has been the disintegration of the LibDems in Salford, with just three hardy souls left to stand in Claremont, Eccles and Weaste and Seedley, although the party is standing in all three constituencies at the General Election.

The LibDems were, until recent times, the biggest threat to the ruling Labour Party majority in Salford but now they have been virtually wiped out in the city, thanks to Nick Clegg's coalition with the austerity-obsessed Tories.

The LibDems' place as the party fielding the largest number of candidates has been taken by TUSC - Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition – which is standing on an anti-cuts platform and whose candidates feature many of those directly affected by the Council's axing of public services.

TUSC, like the Labour and Conservative parties, is standing in all of the twenty seats up for grabs in the local election, closely followed by the Green Party which is standing in 18 wards. UKIP featuring many LibDem defectors is standing in 14 seats, the BNP is down to standing in two seats, and there are two Independents, Paul Doyle standing in Winton, and Jackie Anderson in Irlam.

The General Election sees the Pirate Party standing for the first time in the city, for the Salford and Eccles seat, while the We Are The Reality Party sees Bez standing for Salford and Eccles, and Mags McNally as a late candidate for Worsley and Eccles South.

The ballot for both elections is on Thursday May 7th.

Please make a big turnout, too many complain about the outcome, but cannot be bothered to vote. Time for something new in Salford, time to make a difference and reclaim our City from the council that has dragged us down and even further down over the years.

All I would ask is for all Salfordians to think of the past 40 odd wasted years of Labour dominated councils. Balance is needed, effective opposition to Labours City Mayor while those who were too afraid to speak out should be swept aside. Seven of Salford's wards are in the bottom 3% of social deprivation, our children's education attainment is below national averages. We have cut's rhetoric and blame at the same time as expense and loans scandals surrounding the AJ Bell stadium, a stadium we can no longer call our own. We had disgraceful dealings with the Jam Butty camp, something Salford tories fought for, but kept non-political. If you believe all that Labour tell you, then you can expect the same. We need change, we need councillors who turn up and fight for their wards, not sit back and follow an increasingly questionable City Mayor and his expensive 13 assistants. Salford deserves better. Think of our children, look at other neighbouring authorities. Clean, safe and crime free streets won't just happen you have to bring in the change on 7th May.

Thank You to all names standing in Salford. Gives me a warm feeling that many wish to shape the future of what I have found to be an inclusive community. Sad the majority names will not win, but please all give your best shot and be proud in making a difference.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED
Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.
