In February, letters and emails were sent to Salford City councillors, MPs and City Mayor, Ian Stewart, about the effect that £1.616million cuts to Salford's Health Improvement Service would have on the community.
The Health Improvement Service is involved in everything from supporting women with breastfeeding, to helping elderly people battle dementia and young people suffering from trauma. The letter to the politicians contained statements from nine Salford groups, ranging from Walkden Rotary Club to Bumps and Babies, Just Youth and St Clement's Church in Broughton (see here).
On 28th April, nine days before the Local and General Election, the Mayor is set to make a decision on the future of the Service - which schemes will be reduced and stopped following the £1.616 reduction in the budget. Fifty jobs are at risk (see previous Salford Star article – click here)
Before that decision is taken, Council workers, groups and individuals who benefit from a whole range of public health programmes aim to put as much pressure as possible on the Mayor, with a public protest meeting on 21st April at Swinton British Legion.
