SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2014:

SALFORD COUNCIL WINS DAFT AS A BRUSH PANTO AWARD

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the eighth annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards, which are given out to honour the most deserving individuals and organisations in the city for their stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities over the past twelve months.

This second award of the online ceremony, the coveted Daft As A Brush Panto Award, goes to Salford City Council for going beyond the call of financial duty and being sugar daddy to the Ugly Sisters. Oh no they didn't...Oh yes they did!

THE DAFT AS A BRUSH PANTO AWARD

Goes to…

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL

Picking up this Award will be Salford City Council – which is also picking up the tab for an eight-year pre-lease on an office block being built on the site of the old Exchange Station opposite Manchester Cathedral by partners Carillion, Ask Real Estate and Tristan Capital Partners.

The Greengate office block, called Embankment 101, is the first of two huge buildings nicknamed `The Ugly Sisters', because, er, they are bloody ugly! And the Council, we understand, originally earmarked around £15million to speculate on the project.

In 2011 it was to guarantee 50% of the rent on the first block for the first ten years. The decision to gamble with millions of pounds of local taxpayers' money was taken by Salford Council's Cabinet in secret, rushed through as "urgent and not subject to call-in" while the subsequent decision notice was never posted on the Council's website, as is a legal requirement.

In January this year, however, the terms of the lease were changed – and the Council has now signed an eight-year pre-lease on the whole of the first office block – gambling with an even larger amount of tax payers' money than originally envisaged (see previous Salford Star article - click here).

With Salford Council now guaranteeing to pay 100% of the rent on the first Ugly Sister, it's a no-brainer that speculators would come forward to invest. And so they did…

Tristan Capital Partners a `pan-European real estate investment manager' put out a press release stating that a fund it advises - the European Property Investors Special Opportunities 3 (EPISO3) fund - had become the main investor in the £56million project that features "an innovative lease arrangement from Salford City Council".

`Innovative' meaning `you underwrite our gamble'. `Special Opportunities' meaning `we can't lose'.

"Salford City Council has played a crucial role in bringing this major investment to the city" preened Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart "The development is further evidence that Salford is becoming an extremely attractive city for investors from around the world."

Or should that be `easy touch for investors from around the world'?

In recognition of this fawning over the Ugly Sisters, there could be only one winner of the Salford Star Mary Burns Daft As A Brush Panto Award...

Ladies and gentlemen, it's not behind you, it's in front of your eyes. So stomp your glass slippers, eat the Mayor's magic beans and bow to the giant juggernaut of rampant capitalism for the winner...

We must all withhold council tax . Too much secrecy . Too much wastage . Too much being wasted on exorbitant salaries for council jobsworths and bullshitters. .

I guess there isn't any money left to clean my street for the next 8 years then? Can someone tell me if it is legal to withhold council tax payments (as opposed to just not paying) if you believe the money is being wasted?

They are devoid of any business acumen . In fact they are devoid of any skills useful to society . That's why they are career politicians /bullshitters . Their gross ineptitude had ground this city and it's residents into the gutter . It's easy looting the taxpayer and pretending it's a well-earned salary , in exchange for spewing a few bullshit sentences of meaningless garbage . This lot are incapable of meaningful work . That's why they grub about in the taxpayer-funded trough . These rats should do as Coventry Council are doing - Fighting Back . But that's beyond the grasp of the Salford Wasters Council .

The lack of business brains at Salford City Council beggars belief. Or rather, ian stewrat and his paid-for 13 mini-mayors want to turn Salford residents into beggars by underwriting such a gamble. Who would have thought that investors would pump money into something where THEIR investment is guaranteed! I am waiting to hear if the Council want first option on my 'innovative' magic beans!

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

Star date: 16th May 2021

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
