Every single year since the Mary's started, Peel Holdings has either won or been in contention for this award. It would take a book (or the Salford Star website) to catalogue the handouts that Peel has had from Salford Council, ranging from the £22million+ loans to its joint venture AJ Bell Stadium, to the £30million of public money being thrown at Port Salford, to a zillion housing scheme let offs.
But, ladies and gentlemen of Salford, nothing takes the cake like Peel's complete ownership of MediaCityUK which includes hotels, apartments, car parks, the BBC studios and more. Peel's Monopoly Board on the Quays is raking in £millions for the company that is ultimately based offshore on the Isle of Man yet it has not paid one single penny in planning obligations for any of its schemes at Media City, thanks to the kindness of Salford Council.
Peel Holdings should have paid over £5million in various planning fees for the original construction of Media City but all payments for the site were waived by the Council and that agreement still holds. So this year, for its latest eleven storey tower block at the Quays, featuring a hotel, `media hub' and offices, the Star calculated Peel should have paid almost £1million. The sum wasn't even mentioned in the planning papers (see previous Salford Star article - click here). Perhaps Peel should start its own tv channel FreeBeebies
Or perhaps the Salford Star has got it all wrong. Perhaps the Peel Group really stands for the things it trumpets on its Christmas card this year... Peace, Love and Goodwill...yeah, and there goes a flying fracker over its land on Barton Moss!
So ladies and gentlemen, kiss your tax havens in the Isle of Man, plead for more public money from Salford Council and tring the cash tills at Salford Quays for the winners of the Feed The Rich With £6Million Award (Part 1)...
