Ex-Mayoral Spin Doctor, Matt Finnegan
`Toxic' Matt Finnegan, Salford Council's £65,000 Assistant Director of Communications, tried spinning just a little too hard this year and span out of Salford altogether, hopefully, never to be seen again.
Matthew Finnegan's role as head of press at the Council was supposed to be `politically restricted' (see here) but an email to the Manchester Evening News, leaked to the Salford Star, showed that he was promoting Mayor Ian Stewart's choice of Rebecca Long-Bailey, a Labour Party candidate for the seat of retiring MP Hazel Blears. Which was very political (see here).
Meanwhile, in another highly stupid move, democracy-loving Finnegan also tried to ban the editor of the Salford Star from covering the local election count this year, which he had no authority to do. It led to a personal apology from Returning Officer, Ben Dolan (see here).
Finally, in July, under pressure, Finnegan resigned his post and is now spending more time spinning with his family.
Unfortunately his methods of public relations have had a lasting influence on Salford Mayor Ian Stewart whose latest idea of PR was to set the police onto a resident peacefully protesting about cuts to transport for disabled people nice! (see here)
