PEEL HOLDINGS
Way, way back in 1980, the original Friday 13th film opened in cinemas throughout the country. It was set in a peaceful forest but, in the midst of the environmental tranquillity, a gore-fest of the highest degree emerged as everyone who ventured down its vernal paths got butchered one by one. It was truly horrid.
But the worst bit was at the very end, when you thought the creature had been defeated and, as the credits were about to roll, from the lagoon this slimy arm shot up...OMG! Talk about jump out of your skin...talk about scream...talk about nightmares...
...So let's talk about Peel Holdings, the slimy corporate creature that keeps returning just when you think the bugger has been beaten. From its lagoon on the Manchester Ship Canal comes its army of beastly barristers and terrifying suits attempting to splatter anything that disturbs its hunt for profits.
....Messing with elections, evicting the homeless, ransoming bridges and tow paths, devouring public money, destroying environments, legally frightening anti-frackers and throwing up concrete blocks everywhere...no-one is safe. Not even Salford City Council and the Government...
2018 saw the Broadoak area of Worsley take centre stage in the latest Peel horror show. The company's attempt to get planning permission to build hundreds of houses in the Worsley Greenway was originally rejected by Salford Council and, on appeal, by both the Planning Inspector and the Secretary of State...
...In March, Peel came back for another Appeal, which was dismissed in December by the Government's Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government arguing that "the proposals would impact negatively on the character and appearance of the Greenway".
Just when everyone thought that the creature had finally been defeated, days before Christmas, Peel announced that it would be seeking a judicial review against the appeal decision which, it claimed was "unlawful and should be quashed..."
One RAID (Residents Against Inappropriate Developments) campaigner wrote on social media, "they are like a dog with a bone, don't know when to let go..."
Be afraid...be very afraid, the Peel Holdings beast is back on the loose...
So, ladies and gentlemen, boil your bunnies, slash your environment and massacre your community for the winner of the Salford Star Mary Burns Friday 13th Horror Award...
