CUADRILLA AWARD FOR ATTEMPTED PROTEST STIFLING

BELLWAY HOMES
Ladies and gentlemen, this year, fracking ogre, Cuadrilla, has been trying to stop campaigners protesting at its Preston New Road site in Fylde, using court injunctions to attempt to frighten off the zillions who oppose its earthquake inducing drilling for shale gas. What the hell has this got to do with Swinton? Plenty!
Over at Campbell Road, residents have been vociferously protesting against Bellway Homes - and Salford City Council - centred on the huge problems caused by the developer having only one access road into its site where it is building 241 houses (see here).
The campaign has grown and isn't going away but Bellway thought it could head it off at the pass with some nasty legal threats. The developer's solicitors wrote to the Saving Our Neighbourhood campaign, which represents residents, requiring that...
..."you provide us with an unequivocal undertaking in writing...that you will not in the future, either directly or indirectly: (a) obstruct and/or attempt to obstruct Bellway's right of access to the Site; and/or (b) otherwise interfere and/or attempt to interfere with Bellway's legitimate commercial interests."
The letter also threatened to "commence civil proceedings against you...for an injunction restraining you from committing the acts complained of above (or similar) in the future, damages, legal costs and interest..." (see here)
Saving Our Neighbourhood responded by stating; "It's vital that our community makes it clear that a threat from a multi-billion pound developer via their multi-national law firm will not scare us into signing away our democratic legal rights.
"This outrageous behaviour by a powerful corporation, encouraged by governmental regulatory shifts in favour of developers, has to be stopped right here" it added "Bellway's attempt to crush our small community, fighting to hang on to our quality of life, has far reaching implications, for us and every other community struggling in the face of rampant development. We are now a test case..."
The residents then held a special Santa Protest just before Christmas with children posting festive letters asking for Bellway to 'be gone'...(see here)
This campaign will run and run, as Bellway chases its legal tail trying to put it all to a halt. So, ladies and gentlemen, be good citizens, keep quiet, let the developers rampage across your city and stay home for the winners of the Cuadrilla Award for Attempted Protest Stifling...
