Ladies and gentlemen, where do we begin the citation for the winner of the Salford Star Mary Burns Trashing Salford Again You Scuzzy Fat Cat Loving, Poor People Hating, Northern Wrecking, Back Pocket Lining Arseholes Award? The list is endless…
The cuts - £97million to Salford Council in the last four years – to be followed by another £25million in 2014, and £31million in 2015. The expected figure for 2015 was £25million but the ConDems kindly added another £6million cuts last week. By 2017 Salford Council reckons there will have been £178million cuts.
Now, while the Salford Star believes the Mayor and Council should stick two fingers up at the ConDems and not impose the cuts, no-one should forget who's caused the chaos in the first place – the Tories, aided and abetted by the LibDems - the party that has been totally wiped out in Salford as a `thank you'.
Given that the lily-livered Mayor and Council aren't going to do anything apart from shrug their shoulders and do the dirty work, expect services to dramatically reduce, be privatised or to disappear overnight. 2014 onwards is going to be even more bleak, if that's possible.
On top of the cuts the ConDems have also given us this year…
The Bedroom Tax, which has pushed 41% of our social housing tenants into arrears and caused people to give up their homes for no apparent reason other than an ideological attack on the poor.
The NPPF (National Planning Policy Framework), which has given developers a green light to concrete over and industrialise green spaces, and let property speculators off with millions of pounds worth of planning payments.
Plus NHS ward closures and bed slashing, food bank culture, the rise of zero hour contracts, legal aid destruction, civil servant bullying, the forced privatisation of education though academies and free schools… cuts to pay and pensions...unemployment...the list goes on and on and on… For anyone who remembers Salford in the 80s and early 90s…you ain't seen nothing yet!
All this is happening on a national level as the Tories hand the country over to their big fat cat profiteering business mates – but the Salford Star judges thought it apt to give them our own special localised `appreciation'…
So ladies and gentlemen, get angry, get even and get even angrier for the winners of the Salford Star Mary Burns Trashing Salford Again You Scuzzy Fat Cat Loving, Poor People Hating, Northern Wrecking, Back Pocket Lining Arseholes Award…
