GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE WINS SPELLING AWARD

GMP WINS SALFORD STAR SPELLING AWARD

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards, given out to honour stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities in the city over the past 12 months.

While the winners tend to be Salford politicians and companies, there's been a last minute entry for Greater Manchester Police spelling at the anti-fracking Big Orange Bus blockade in Salford this morning. Yep, in came the `Protestor Removal Team' – and out went the dictionary. So wave your English GCSEs in the air for GMP…

This way down the red carpet please…

THE SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2013

Category: Eccellense In Speling Award
Winner: Greater Manchester Police Protestor Removal Team

Oh yes, it was serious stuff this morning as Greater Manchester Police moved in to deal with a Big Orange Bus that had appeared in front of the gates for the IGas exploratory drilling site at Barton Moss. Four campaigners locked themselves onto seats, the steering wheel, the boot and the roof of the vehicle to delay delivery convoys by over six hours (see full article – click here).

It was so serious that GMP had to bring in its `Protestor Removal Team' with loads of cutting equipment and some very serious campaigner-vanishing kit. Unfortunately, however, no-one in the assembled crowd could take the police action very seriously…

First of all because there was a Big Orange Bus parked up full of rather amusing notices in its window. And, secondly, because the `Protestor Removal Team' had managed to spell its own name wrong. There's no such word as `protestor' in the English dictionary.

Very soon, the protesters – with an `e' – were pointing out the lamentable spelling and the `Protestor Removal Team' retreated having, er, removed the `protestors'.

Perhaps this is something that Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd might like to look into, if he doesn't want his force to be bottom of the English class – not a good example for our youth.

So, ladies and gentlemen, please wave your dictionaries, beep your horns and cause a laughter riot for the winner of this new Salford Star Mary Burns Award for Eccellense In Speling…

Greater Manchester Police `Protestor Removal Team'!!!

Applause

If the Team would like to make an acceptance speech please use the comments box below, although using spell check might be advisable.

Intbel "Protester" or "Protestor" both are correct usage within the English language, try a quick Google search.

Interesting to note that in the search warrant for flares and materials relating to flares yet again the word 'protester' was spelled incorrectly.

Goodness me is this for real? I wonder if this "TEAM" will be deployed in time for the forthcoming BEDROOM TAX evictions, and if so I call for an organised people's resistance!

@kenneth, the reason developers don't want to redevelop old houses is because they have to pay vat on materials where new developments they don't pay vat and they can get 5 - 6 times or even more properties on the same land, hence more profit's, but uglier crap building that probably won't be around in 50 years time and if they are, will probably need a lot of maintaining in the near future, unlike the old housing stock that was made to last.

See Paul's comment et al...All this is way off the topic of spelling, so kindly refrain from cluttering up the comments box. Yet again this thread is closed unless it's about spelling - and Paul we suggest you take your determination to slag off `lefties, trade unions and the Labour Party' to a more appropriate forum.

@Bernard Brough, we leave the threats to the lefties, you only have to look at union and left wing marches to understand this, they always end up in violence. and we don't try to close down debate by using such word like racist, fascist, goosestepping, nazi, these words are used by people who can't debate and who have lost the argument. Ken, thatcher didn't stop apprenticeships, businesses did this and now with cheap skilled foreign workers coming in to the country we no longer need them, this, you can blame the Labour Party for. and the lowest paid workers are going to see their pay decrease further because of the labour parties treachery to this country.

Just for you Ken http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/waste/142184.aspx I suggest if the waste is on your land you act quickly and as the EA say "decide how to deal with it safely and pay for the cost of disposal" I will leave it there now that I have educated you.

Just read the stars figures on repossessions and evictions in Salford they are horrendous Low Wages and little low cost housing are getting the blame but Both these problems could be solved without costing a fortune. But when you look back at some of the good solid properties that were demolished in Brindle Heath Langworthy road south lower Broughton the Demolition of the Wheaters Creasent Estate was Criminal /Bad Planning all of it They built luxury apartments instead of full regeneration of the older houses

Thanks for your feedback Ken, unfortunately I do not have a Twitter of Facebook account, but then that is besides the point. YOU made a statement implying this statement was fact, I asked you to support it with a direct link to your evidence, you have failed to do this therefore anything you say on here cannot be taken as factual. I was not for or against fracking I was just asking you to link to your source so I could attain for myself some further information, if all you are going to do is attack anybody that asks you for further information then all I can presume it that you have no real actual facts or data. So thanks Ken but I am now firmly of the opinion that all these protesters like you talk shit. P.s it not the councils responcebility to move fly-tips off private land, why should my council tax pay to clean up other peoples land??? You would not like the council paying to clean up Peels land would you!

If the non descripte would get on twitter or face book he could attain all the info he can digest about the perils of Fracking and Fossil fuels in general He will not get any info reading Tory papers or any other media source owned by Fascist millionaires who make fortunes out of Gas and Oil. As for the dumping of building rubbish in weaste lane they are now putting it in any empty bins/ and dumping in general Fridges Washers etc on any land is against the law and the responsability of the local council to remove it and to prosecute the people dump it now can we finish this useles diatribe as it is totally pointls

@Kenneth w mckelvey, if you are not prepared to quote your "source" then it's uncredible simple. As for the Weaste lane clean up, the WHOLE of Weaste lane was done. So are you sure the area you are talking about is not one of the cut offs in between houses?? These are the responability of the ajoining houses, should YOU be cleaning it up Ken? P.S next time try replying on the correct thread, or is that your trick to avoid a reasoned debate and logical reply??????????????? Sod it just call me a Nazi and have done with it.

Hey, think I was the one who pointed this out as we stood around the brazier at the back end of the big orange bus :) I used to write for The Occupied Times and we had the protester/protestor debate back in 2011. We consulted our honed writers' gut feelings and corroborated those with reference to The Guardian Style Guide (aka bible). Verdict: protestER. (A friend recently bought me a button badge: "I'm silently correcting your grammar". I know I'm a geek.)

(Remember when these foreign medical company's did Breast Implants made a mess of them then all went bankrupt so as not to pay any compensation) Wait till they start on our NHS

To the non descripte who questioned about the governments fracking maps and licences they are now being banded about on Twitter and what is very noticeable is the scarcity of licences for London and the home county's/ And regarding the cleaning up on weaste lane my part has not been swept to several years and the builders tips for their rubbish is still being ignored by Salford Cleansing We have Three councillors in Weaste drawing money by false pretences So much for your snide comments about friends in High places/

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
