HAZEL BLEARS TO STAND DOWN AS SALFORD AND ECCLES MP
|
Star date: 20th February 2014
HAZEL DOES ONE
Mega controversial Salford and Eccles MP Hazel Blears has announced to members of the Labour Party tonight that she is stepping down at the next General Election.
More details here… |
|
Salford and Eccles MP Hazel Blears has announced that she is not standing at the next General Election, although, as yet (7:30pm) there is no official statement on her website.
Hazel Blears recent history has been one of controversy, beginning with her `Rocking The Boat' brooch during the latter days of the Labour Party Government, to her over-the-top obscene expenses claims (see here). Last May, Hazel landed a £1,000 a day job as `Strategic Advisor' with police and crime consultants Juice Advisory Ltd, while sitting on Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee, as well as being a former Police and Counter Terrorism Minister (see here). Facing accusations of cashing in on her public office and conflicts of interest, she almost immediately packed the job in.
Hazel recently won the Salford Star Mary Burns `Bum of the Year' Award for this ill-advised consultancy job and her extravagant spending on toilet rolls for her Langworthy constituency office (see here)
As we write, tributes aren't exactly pouring in from either former front bench Labour Government colleagues, or Salford City Mayor, Ian Stewart – whose Eccles Parliamentary seat was taken over by Hazel in a boundary re-shuffle before the last General Election.
Update: 21st February
Hazel Blears made a statement last night saying she wanted to "spend more time with her family”, adding "It is a huge privilege to represent the place where I was born, brought up and have lived all my life, so I have taken this decision with a heavy heart."
Reaction…
Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart has still not made a statement, preferring to tweet about abandoned Paris Metro stations being reborn as nightclubs, parks and pools.
David Henry, who stood against Blears as the Hazel Must Go candidate at the last General Election tweeted “#HazelBlears stepping down? There’s a good reason for popping open the `Socialist Champagne’!”
Former Salford City Council Leader, John Merry, tweeted “As leader had a great partnership with Hazel for the benefit of Salford sorry that she is now standing down”
Fellow Salford Broughton and Blackley MP, Graham Stringer, tweeted nothing but Barbara Keeley, Worsley and Eccles South MP, tweeted “I’m sorry to hear that my neighbour and colleague Hazel Blears is to stand down she fought hard for #Salford”

| Do we see the early signs of a job-swap coming along...the MP becomes Mayor and the Mayor becomes MP? It feels like a distinctly unsavoury possibility. Of course this would be subject to the ratification of the electorate.... |

| Salford star you quote in the article Barbara Keeley saying "I’m sorry to hear that my neighbour and colleague Hazel Blears", are you sure this quote is correct????? Bab's lives in Sale and has nothing to do with Salford apart from using it as a means to milk money from the taxpayer as an MP. She needs to announce she is going as well, do you know that we the plebs of Salford pay the electric bill for her London pad even though the bills are in her hubby's name as he lives there with her. WTF not only do we pay the unlimited expences of MP's but also those of their family as well!!!!!!!!!! The most the taxpayer should pay is half, but if it was performance related then I would not give her that. |

She's probably about 4 years too late.
Has she got a job with Salford RLFC? That seems to be the way to go for washed up public servants. She has got red hair. She could be a mascot.
Who's next for her old job? We could save the country a bob or two. All we need is a few balloons tied together and a red rosette stuck on somewhere.
I predict an increased majority if not a landslide already.

| I add my thanks to Hazel for all her support given to the developments of sport, community cohesion, crime reduction and inward investments. As MP Hazel brought the BBC to locate in Salford, pioneered regeneration and remains inspirational to families, pensioners and young people. I wish her happiness for the future and I am proud to have attended quality meetings chaired by this amazingly caring lady. |

| Long overdue. With her eve-of-election and childish 'rocking the boat' badge she even managed to stab her own side in the back. In 2010 North West Tonight interviewed 20 people on Swinton Precinct and no-one had a good word to say about her. Frank Allaun would have been spinning in his grave. Her departure opens things up and I hope there can be a genuine socialist challenge to her successor. |

| At the risk of getting shouted down, allow me to speak up for Hazel somewhat. I do not agree with a lot of things Hazel backed in government. Party unity being what it is, she always backed her party leader. That is a principle I would struggle to uphold myself, and I do respect her for it for that reason even if I would have preferred her to behave differently. The expenses affair was not handled well. So there are things I fundamentally disagree with her on and disapprove of her behaviour on certain issues. However, when I personally approached her as my constituency MP with a problem I had encountered, she was outstanding in arguing my position, securing a debate in Parliament and sparing no effort to resolve the problem. In the end, this proved successful. I do not think I could have achieved the same outcome without her help. Moreover, the law upon which I relied as my remedy (the Human Rights Act 1998) was introduced by Hazel's government and backed by her in Parliament. |

| Seems as the mayor or any of Hazel's colleagues have not expressed any thanks I thought as a constituent that I would do the honors. So thanks Hazel for voting for more EU integration, voting against a transparent Parliament, voting for university tuition fees, voting very strongly against fewer MPs in the House of Commons, voting very strongly for the Iraq war, & voting against a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU, you have done us proud Hazel, NOT. Also note that this two faced fleecer of the public purse voted very strongly for introducing foundation hospitals, yes and campaigned against Salford royal foundation scrapping maternity services, WTF??? Look the info up for you self peeps and see what else Hazel has been slight of hand about. www.theyworkforyou.com |

| She should have gone in 2010 after her disgusting behaviour with her expenses and her hypocrisy about the closure of the maternity ward. She's kept her head down since then and has probably been a better MP for it. I suspect she'll seek the Labour nomination for Mayor in 2016. Hopefully by then we'll have all realised that the future of Salford can't depend on the self-interest of mainstream politicians and will elect a candidate who will stand up for the people of this city rather than themselves and/or their mates. |

| The good news is she is gone but Stewart may have his eye on the seat, he's not going to get re-elected as mayor but he knows that the idiots of Salford would happily elect him as a Money Poacher. Or maybe some other greedy "principled socalist" is waiting in the wings. Also watch this space for Merry when he loses his seat in May. The bad news to any of those not in the real world is that Labour will be re-elected in brain dead Salford. |

| Bet she has her eye on Spicers old job, £150k a year, closer to home, big expences payable, back with her old mate Sewer-rat Stewart??? Hazel and Ian combo, 'Running Salford - into the fucking ground'. It coming folks and it will be known as the Stewbler years. Or at the next election it could become know as the 'Bleary Ian' years as he will claim to not remember any of the damage he has done since 2012. |
