SALFORD RED DEVILS PUT MANCHESTER ON THE MAP

Star date: 18th February 2014

PEEL HOLDINGS PUT MANCHESTER ON SALFORD SHIRTS

After the £millions of loans and grants from Salford Council, and after taking the Salford name off the stadium they play at, the newly named Salford Red Devils played their first game of the season on Sunday with MediaCityUK Manchester plastered on their shirts, courtesy of sponsors Peel Holdings.

Is this the final insult to Salford people? Not at all… there's more!

For years, Salford councillors have been telling residents how important it was to have a Super League rugby club in the city to put Salford on the map. This was used by Salford City Council to justify £millions in loans and grants both to prop up the team and provide a new stadium, costing in excess of £22million.

First the name of the stadium changed from Salford Community Stadium to Salford City Stadium, then to the AJ Bell Stadium. Now Marwan Koukash's Red Devils themselves are running around in shirts displaying Manchester, after sponsors Peel Holdings (Peel Group et al) plastered its MediaCityUK Manchester logo over players' chests.

Peel notoriously moved Media City to Manchester by re-branding it as such in July last year (see previous Salford Star article – click here). The company - currently at the centre of anti-fracking campaigns up the road from the `AJ Bell Stadium' - also re-branded the Lowry Outlet mall which it bought recently as being in MediaCityUK Manchester too.

Indeed, virtually all new development in Salford – and usually subsidised by Salford tax payers' money – is being branded as Manchester; from the New Bailey development `Manchester's new business district', to Chapel Street's Vimto Gardens `Manchester' (see previous Salford Star article – click here)

It follows the University of Salford, Manchester, and The Lowry Hotel previously `re-locating' to Manchester.

Meanwhile, something very strange is going on with Salford Red Devils because their mascot has MediaCityUK on its shirt, without mentioning Manchester, and adverts for the replica shirts on club's website also have Manchester missing…

…They couldn't be ashamed or embarrassed by putting Manchester on the map could they? Especially with Chief Exec, Martin Vickers, a former `strategic director' of Salford City Council, who was smack in the middle of the negotiations to help rescue the formerly ailing Salford Reds...

Mr Broomhead, if you haven't got it yet you soon will do, particularly if you are a Salford ratepayer. I remember a few months back this club being on its uppers and the club screaming for physical and financial support...now it has a sugar daddy the club has forgotten its original fan base - anybody see the opening game at Barton? Fantastic result - shame about the sea of blue and red (seating) - A stadium built in the wrong place and organised by a team with one arm tied behind its back by its partners ... I just hope results stay positive - as dear old Peel wont half be quick to carry on with Sale if there's a mass exodus brought on by bad results.

Don't see the issue personally. Salford are now the club for the whole of the Manchester City Region, not just the good folk of Salford. They have big plans to expand their fanbase and now have the backing of Peel and the finances to take them forward. Best wishes to the club for 2014.

Why is anyone remotely surprised at Peel's antics. They are the real de facto local authority in the true sense of the word. The council are little more than bystanders. And if perchance a bit of name altering is achieved it will be just throwing the council a bone for the sake of saving the face of local councilors. Humiliating one's minions should be avoided if possible. Peel will do what they want and the council will be left in their slipstream blaming others for their impotence and irrelevance. If Salford is genuinely being absorbed by Manchester lets get it done and dusted and create an LA that can actually control the likes of Peel.

Star, this has been going on since your humble mag was in print. What was it that was said - if you build it they will come? That's certainly the ethos when it comes to peel, but when you look at it very closely who gets the plaudits? Our Beloved University has seen sense - it hasn't daubed its sisters name all over its campus - although it has crept into its marketing... Developers will be developers, if they're daft enough not to address locations correctly - who am I to bemoan them if they don't get the trade they're after nearby? Peel's Dream is becoming a reality (sadly) where every development is associated with them - so surely by now they would know where they are...if they don't - tear up the agreement where the people hand over money to them hand over fist and don't draw up a new agreement till they do. As for the omission - of "Mediacity UK, M********R" on the Reds shirts it might have dawned on peel they're taking money more than once from the locals so having Manchester on the shirt might be a step too far! (look at peels base at the quays - they may have eradicated Manchester from there too!:))

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
