Today at the Whitworth Locke hotel on Princess Street in Manchester, EARTS Fete 2020 held a pop up exhibition with accompanying workshops. The artists, numbering over one dozen, were all from Europe but had made their homes locally. And two, Magdalena Kij and Miroslaw Ogorzalek, are now living in Salford.
While graphic artist, Miroslaw, exhibited a print of a woman with Extinction Rebellion in her eye, Magdalena displayed a full on black figure, complete with an alter-ego mask called 'Lena' and a dark, dark outfit suffused with the words 'Try'...
"I had just come to the country trying to make a new life and then 'Try' came to me" she explained "I live near Eccles New Road, Langworthy, but before then I was living near Upper Camp Street where I found this dress. There's one space where the people are just throwing everything..."
The dress has been re-created into an art piece with symbols and that word 'Try', while the coat is also second hand, as are all the materials..."I've tried to recycle things and I'm always trying to find stuff" Magdalena said "I'm working on new masks with my friend and using some metal things from the streets. Salford gives a lot because there's a lot of things on the streets, and I'm picking it up!"
Originally from Krakow, Magdalena says Salford is her new home and wants people to work with her on projects that have meaning...
"I came here alone trying to find my paths and found work so I live near work" she said "I like being in Salford, it is nice, and I would like to do more things. In Eccles I have done things with the community, a mask workshop on hate awareness, and I would like to do more activities with communities on masks, environmental issues and human rights.
"I want to work with artists and activists, and work with the communities and make art performance or protest with them" she underlined "In a friendly way to reach people..."
