NEW BUS LANE OUTSIDE SALFORD CIVIC CENTRE PLUS ALMOST £20MILLION OF WORKS TO TRAFFORD ROAD

Star date: 12th February 2020 CHORLEY ROAD TO SEE NEW BUS LANE A new dedicated bus lane is to be created along Chorley Road in Swinton, outside the Civic Centre, together with an 'upgrade' of the junction with Station Road and an 'upgrade' of the junction with Wellington Road. It's part of the SBNI programme, which will also include improvements to Madams Wood Road and the East Lancs - Lancaster Road junction. Salford City Council is about to tender for works to the city's roads this summer as part of Salford Bolton Network Improvements (SBNI); Delivery Package 2. Swinton will see a dedicated bus lane along the A6 Chorley Road, from the Stafford Road Junction to Wellington Road Junction, and from the Wellington Road Junction to the approach of Chorley Road/Partington Lane/ Station Road Junction. The Chorley Road/Station Road junction will also see a 'full upgrade' "to optimise traffic flows throughout the junction and wider network", states the Council, plus the closure of the segregated left turn lane from Station Road onto Chorley Road, "providing increased footway space in this area, improving the pedestrian environment by building out the existing footway adjacent to the Church Inn public house and removing existing sections of pedestrian guardrail which currently create a pinch point for pedestrians". There will also be an upgrade of the Chorley Road/Wellington Road Junction. Elsewhere, Madams Wood Road in Little Hulton will see re-surfacing, 20mph speed limits imposed and new road markings and traffic signs. Lancaster Road will see the road widened and another left hand turn lane created at the junction for the East Lancs Road A580, plus improved pedestrian crossings. And the junction at the East Lancs Road/ Worsley Road/ Partington Lane will also see 'amendments' for traffic and pedestrians. The total cost is going to be around £1.4million, to be paid for mostly by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and work will start this summer. Meanwhile, Salford Council is also going out to tender for the £5.906million Swinton Greenway which, once completed, "will provide an entirely traffic-free walking and cycling route between Swinton and Monton" the Council states. Funding is expected to come from the GM Mayor's Challenge Fund. In a jam of traffic-related contracts, Salford Council is also about to commission £12.212million of £19.835million worth of works on the Trafford Road Improvements Scheme, which will see huge changes to junctions for both traffic and pedestrians (see previous Salford Star article for details – click here and click here). Funding will be coming from an array of sources - £10.5million from Growth Deal 3, £4.835 from Mayor's Challenge Fund and £4.5million from Salford City Council (including Section 106 money).

| We are told by all the loony lefties and gullable greenies that we need bus lanes to stop all the cars causing pollution. Complete bullshit,but let us accept it as gospel truth like these tossers do.our wicked evil prime minister has just said that in twelve years time all cars sold are going to have to be electric or hydrogen. Does this mean we will have to introduce more car lanes, to get those filthy smelly diesel buses off the road? If bus lanes are such a good idea for cutting pollution, why do we let diesel taxis in them, and not let clean electric cars in them? |

| Gareth L you are spot on with this one, very few of the officials who are behind schemes such as this actually live in Salford, Andy Burnhan doesn't and I know of another who lives in South Manchester.
This council have forgotten about large areas in the City and see only what they want to see, they don’t see the traffic jams on the A6 at Walkden, Old Clough Lane , Wardley, Boothstown, Worsley, Winton etc.
It is a pity these officials can’t use the cameras on the buses to find out why some buses don’t turn up, turn up late, I wonder how Mr Burnham travels to work.?
The council can’t afford money for schemes that would benefit the majority but can always find some for their own schemes usually around the Civic Centre where it gets its lawns cut and maintained, flower beds tended whereas everywhere else is forgotten.

| A bus lane on Chorley Road? They will just create more congestion during rush hour. It' stupid, who makes these decisions? The bus lanes on the East Lancs have traffic backing up at 4pm to 7pm of an evening from the start of the Heights to Swinton.

| Don't think motorists know that the V buses that use the Lancs have cameras fitted, so not many fixed cameras isn't entirely germain. The main issue is Swinton is fixable with a profit making alternative but you mention it you get poopooed. |

| Merseyside had about 28 bus lanes about 5/6years ago, they have got about 4 now in the city centre. Liverpool city mayor Joe Anderson got rid of them, he said in 2017 , "it was wrong to use motorists as cash cows and that the majority of bus lanes didn't work and The traffic is flowing better" he said.. Over on the east lancs road in salford it's choca, hammered and gridlock around walkden and swinton between 6.30am to 9.30am and 3pm to 6pm. This is all because of the bus lanes on the east lancs and the bus lane cameras to stop pissed off motorists driving in them to get out of the traffic. Also this morning I went down the cresent towards town at 9.30am and from Fredrick rd to the old salford royal, it took me 25minutes, all because of the bus lanes. Get rid of all bus lanes, but they wont, These councils are making money on the motorists. |

Or to be more accurate, motorists were fined £512,000 for disregarding their driver training and ignoring road signs.

| Seriously. The 2 VERY SHORT bus lanes are not really needed at all, complete waste of money. Salford council are going to put 2 bus lane cameras on these 2 VERY SHORT bus lanes and catch people out. It's a 60quid fine or its 30quid if the fine is payed within 14days. Most people pay within 14days, and if the fine is not payed within 28days it goes up to 90quid. It's all about salford council making money from motorists. Salford council raked in 512,000 in 2017/18 and in 2018/19 raked in 456,000 in bus lane fines.. Over in that little city, the city called Manchester, about 2half years ago, mcr council decided to make a one and a half mile stretch of Oxford rd for buses and black cabs only. About 5000 Motorists get caught out on Oxford rd every week. Mcr council raked in a whopping 8.7 million in 2017/18 and a whopping 14.1 million in 2018/19 in bus lane fines. Cameras everywhere. |

| So, it looks like the cycling lanes are being given the thumbs up. I don't wish it on anyone - but look forward to laments when County realise their lovely cycle paths go across four lanes of moving traffic and a junction (Not forgetting a metrolink line) |

| This is a waste of money why are you putting a two short bus lane in when your going to improve road with smart traffic iights. This would be abused the only way your could ensure road is but bus cams there then you would only be doing to make money if is not broke why are you spending fast amount of money to fix it. The only good point is you are widening pavement outside church pub. I understood from the meeting that we had time to complain and voice are concern before implantation. This was what I was told in the public meeting where you could not explain my concerns and observations. |

| It's obvious the removal of the left turn on station road is to provide a bigger development area for when the lancastrian hall comes down. Just removing that provides a much bigger footprint for a replacement building. |

| Can we see the reports which recommend the above (not the surfacing). The impact reports would be an interested read I'm sure. I was always given to understand that any works should improve capacity within the highway network, some previous projects appear to buck this theory. |
