Last night, accompanied by The Commoners Choir Leeds and Open Voices Manchester, Red Saunders' incredible Hidden Tableaux's of the Peterloo Massacre were projected onto the outside wall of the Bridgewater Hall.
The huge Tableaux's, recreating scenes from Peterloo and beyond using modern day people as models and uniting Victorian techniques with computer imaging, are currently on display at Manchester Central Library but were screened a few yards away from the site of the Massacre as part of the commemorations.
The event brought history back alive, together with being a poignant reminder of current struggles against the powers that be, and made an evocative statement in the midst of huge advertising displays and unaffordable apartment blocks that are pervading the area.
Today, there is a Peterloo Memorial March with people recreating the routes of the original protest two hundred years ago, culminating in a rally at Manchester Central from 3pm. Tomorrow there is also a March For Democracy, organised by the trade unions, with campaigners converging along similar routes for a rally in Albert Square from 1pm. many people from Salford are expected to attend both events.
