SALFORD CITY COUNCIL TO SPEND OVER £1MILLION ON DEMOLISHING HIGH STREET ESTATE

150 HOUSES IN PENDLETON TO BE DEMOLISHED – TO BE REPLACED BY WHAT?

Salford Council is set to approve the demolition of 150 now empty houses on the High Street Estate in Pendleton, near Salford Precinct, at a cost of £1,112,161. As yet, no details have been released publicly as to what type of properties will replace them. Three years ago, the Council stated that only 52 'affordable rented homes' would be provided for displaced families.

At next week's Procurement Board of Salford City Council, a contract is set to be approved for Connell Brothers Ltd to demolish the remaining 150 empty houses on the High Street Estate, near Salford Precinct, at a cost of £1,112,161.

After this demolition is complete, 890 properties, all affordable, will have been bulldozed in Pendleton as part of 'regeneration' and 'redevelopment' plans.

Three years ago, in 2016, the Council agreed to the demolition of the 150 High Street Estate homes but only provided 52 `affordable rented homes' to 'decant' people into.

"...the allocation of the 52 new affordable units should be linked to the clearance of the High Street estate to maximise re-housing choice for residents affected" stated a Council report.

However, it added that "Changes in Government funding priorities mean that grant allocation for affordable rented homes will not be available. This will impact on the partnership's ability to bring forward future phases of affordable rented accommodation".

Since this statement three years ago, there's been no publicly-released plans for the future of the estate. However, the Council's Business Case for Pendleton that went off to the Government at the start of the regeneration stated that the final plans for Pendleton "will lead to a dilution in the current concentration of economically inactive households" by "young professionals and individuals who wish to live in Pendleton"...


Salford City Council does not respond to comment or interview requests from the Salford Star so we cannot ask for information...

I keep reading comments about how bad Salford City Council is. Yet time and time again people elect the same people into office to carry on dragging the City down. Lets knot blame the council but the idiots who elected them.

These houses were originally maisonettes when built 50 years ago. About 25 years ago, at huge cost, they were re modeled as houses. now they are pulled down at a cost of 7500 pounds each. Why did they not just flog them off to people who could do them up and live in them?I went to see a pal of mine the other day who does refurbs. I got talking to some of the lads who work for him. Four of them lived in rented property Salford,three of these in social housing. we got talking about this site, and I was saying how when I was young, people used to refurb the houses behind the langworthy. If these houses had been sold to lads like these, the result would be four houses free for other people to live in, and lower housing costs for the lads that renovate the houses. Instead ,we spend a million quid to get derelict land. Never mind, just vote labour.

Hold on a sec… it's alright to have a go at Salford Council about this, go back through the comments logs I've done it myself...but isn't it time to look at the ALMOs who have taken over most (if not all) of the housing stock in that area? Salford Council may be setting up the demolition - but what's the chances the ALMOs have a plan for that estate after the flats have gone?

I wouldn't be surprised if they allow property developer acquaintances to build Yuppie apartments there, with tall security fences around each block, and concierges providing 24 hour security for minimum wage. The apartments will each go for upwards of two hundred and fifty G. And the political lemmings in the Civic Centre will rub their pseudo Socialist hands with glee at the prospect of all of that new council tax coming into their sweaty coffers. Salford Council are a joke. Wherever you go, these Muppets are allowing construction firms to build "luxury" apartments and "deluxe" houses. The ridiculously titled "The Brackens" off Campbell Road in Swinton is a perfect example of "Our Heroes'" political muppetry.

Why not do these properties up and give them to British Families or British homeless people Ex Service men and women that are in need. Its just a waste.

If this leads towards the further gentrification of Pendleton, I'll be more than happy. It could be a superb area for people to live in, but you've still got an undesirable element that ruin it for a lot of people that just want to live quietly. Being so close to Manchester City centre, it could be a desirable area, and the council should do all they can to make it so.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.
