ALMOST 600% RISE IN NUMBER OF NORTH WEST WORKING HOMELESS FAMILIES
|
|
Star date: 23rd July 2018
STAGGERING INCREASE IN NUMBER OF WORKING HOMELESS FAMILIES New data released today by Shelter shows a huge rise in the number of families that are homeless but working in the North West – from 56 families in 2013 to 390 in 2017, a 592% increase. "In many cases, these are parents who work all day or night before returning to a cramped hostel or B&B where their whole family is forced to share a room" says Polly Neate, CEO of Shelter. Full details here...

More proof of the social housing crisis comes today from charity Shelter, releasing data revealing a huge increase in the number of working homeless families in the North West. Tables, based on Government data, show a rise in the number of working homeless families from 56 in November 2013 to 390 in November 2017, a 592% increase. The proportion of homeless families in work in the North West has also risen, from 14% in November 2013, to 26% in November 2017, an 89% increase. That over a quarter of families stuck in temporary accommodation actually have parents working is a shocking indictment of the social housing crisis, the high rent crisis and the low wage and stagnant benefits crisis. "It's disgraceful that even when families are working every hour they can, they're still forced to live through the grim reality of homelessness" says Polly Neate, CEO of Shelter. "In many cases, these are parents who work all day or night before returning to a cramped hostel or B&B where their whole family is forced to share a room...A room with no space for normal family life like cooking, playing or doing homework" she adds. "We cannot allow struggling families to slip through the cracks created by our housing crisis - the Government must urgently come up with a new plan for social housing that delivers the genuinely affordable homes we desperately need" she insists "Our commission on the future of social housing will be calling for bold solutions, because more of the same is simply not good enough." As anyone who has walked around Salford or Manchester will note, there's loads of houses and apartments being built, but few are genuinely affordable for families. The causes of this are not just Government policies. Salford City Council itself should be harvesting affordable houses from developers but, as the Salford Star constantly shows, its own planning policies allow developers to avoid such commitments, mainly in the areas central Salford area where thousands of properties are being built. Last week alone, around eighty affordable properties didn't happen at just one development through such planning policies (see here). The Shelter research briefing, titled In work, but out of a home, also reveals that across England as a whole, 55% of families living in temporary accommodation were working, a ten per cent increase from 2013... "This represents over 33,000 families who were holding down a job despite having nowhere stable to live" the report notes "With so many families in work but out of a home, it's clear that our current housing and benefit system does not adequately support all hard-working families...we can see that the situation is getting worse."

| I don't get people like Joey. I really don't get them. It appears to me that he was trying a bit of emotional blackmail. Ban people like me, Philip Rossi, and Ray of Sunshine, or else I won't comment on the Star anymore. And then he tries the old ruse of nobody reads the star anymore, or comments on it, due entirely to the commenters whose opinions that I don't agree with having their contributions published.
How sad is that. We're all adults here, with our own opinions. I have to be honest, such behaviour reminds me of the kid who's rubbish at football, but owns the ball, taking the ball back and going home with it during the game because he barely gets a kick of it. Shameful shameful behaviour. All that I can say is Get a Life. |

| See Joey's comment below...We put articles up and people comment, even though we think a lot of them are bonkers. What would you like us to do - censor them? We only block comments for libel, racism etc, or too far off topic. Most people prefer to comment on Facebook sites that link to the articles these days. A couple of things - if you don't like the comments, don't read them and concentrate on the articles. And another thing; so much for 'dwindling' readership - the Star gets tens and tens of thousands of readers. The online site has never been so popular, actually. |

| And the usual suspects can't help themselves, helping to prove my point. This is my last post on Salford Star as I leave it to the dwindling number of readers. The lack of respect for Salford Star by the majority of residents is in no small part due to the ramblings and bickering between a handful of people. These seem representative of the readership. Who would want to be associated with them?

| @ Rossi. So you're calling yourself a Liar then? You acknowledged it happened and Salford Labour were responsible. Bewildering. Salford Labour entered into these PFI's, no one forced them too. It's also Salford Labour's fault for not collecting developer fees. I'm not a Tory, you just assumed that because I'm being critical of Salford Labour. You also called me a "Freemason", bewildering again. I'm done, you literally are the embodiment of stupidity. |

| Joey everything that Ray said was true. What you are conveniently forgetting is that Tony Blair's "New" Labour Party were NOT the Labour Party. Truth be told, Blair and his cabinet, excluding Brown, were more right wing than John Major's Conservative government. So everything that Ray has said is true. Ray speaks nothing but pure, undiluted truth. And you can be sure of this, the next Labour Government with Corbyn as Prime Minister will be a TRUE Labour Government. Not some disgraceful counterfeit one, such as the one that we had under the arch fifth columnist and ultra right wing Tony Blair. |

| Rayofsunshine, "PFI deals were invented in 1992 by the Conservative government led by Sir John Major, but became widespread under Labour after 1997". Not difficult to find as it was on the Labour Party website. History can be manipulated to provide support for any argument, as you are attempting to do. This online publication is becoming a laughing stock with the comments representative of the people that read it. Most people in the community think it's a joke. Salford Star, if you want to be respected again, it's time to do something about it. It has become an echo chamber sounding board for a select group of opinionated, ill informed people. They just spout their misguided opinion based on limited and biased information. In the meantime I shall be joining the vast and increasing numbers of FORMER readers. |

Sadly, there is nothing that can be done to rectify their naivety." You acknowledged it was fact then, yet you now you say it's a lie? Are you also calling the people at Sheffield University liars who published the fact that Salford has missed out on £18 Million in developer fees? These are facts Rossi and calling them lies either means you're an idiot or a troll, no one can be that stupid and inconsistent. Salford Labour are overwhelmingly to blame for the Housing problems in Salford. So I will place blame on Salford Labour not because I blindly believe in "lies", but because of actual facts. As for my name, it has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm talking about, I could write a fake one and you'd be none the wiser. However, if me not stating my name for credibility's sake makes it easier for you to dismiss facts and reality, then go right ahead. |

government debt - in reality though it was used by the Tories to pass money to their masters, The Bankers !
Fact David Cameron in 2010 promised that his Coalition Government would abolish P.F.I - however,
because of howls of protests from The Bankers, P.F.I
was allowed to continue. The rate of profit flowing from P.F.I was increased during David Cameron's Tèrm

Whats wrong with it? Anyone who has ever done a days work can see these properties could be renovated. If the useless tosser mayor that we have gives me the houses that he is going to pay good taxpayers money to knock down, then me and a few mates of mine ,all good tradesmen, will do them up and rent them to families that need them at the affordable rate. This will save the cost of knocking them down, and the cost of building new houses. like I said , if he wants to knock them down, let him knock em down and rebuild, but let him use his own cash. Mayor Dennett and his chum Merry fancy themselves as bob the builders.Let them get on with it. I offer to put my cash where my mouth is, our mayor won't, he won't even put his where his arse is. |

| @ Rossi: "Had Enough, Stop blaming Labour for the state of things" Yet again, while the Tory cuts of £200 Million don't help it is not the Tories in control of Salford Council's housing policy. The Tories didn't force Salford Council to not collect fees from developers, which didn't just starve the Council of £18 million in unpaid fees (with other estimates being far higher), but also starved the people of Salford of affordable housing. It also wasn't the Tories who embarked on PFI schemes that will ultimately cost £800+ Million (On a side note, Salford Labour will lose this Council more in the long run than the Tory cuts so far). Those schemes weren't just a one off scam on some "naive" Councillors either, it was successive Salford Labour Council leaders over nearly 2 decades. That isn't naivety, it's complete and utter incompetence. |

| Had Enough, Stop blaming Labour for the state of things. It is obvious to anyone reading your comments that you are a supporter of the Conservative party. The fact is, the Conservative Government have starved Salford Council of 200 million pounds and counting. If we end up with yet another Conservative Government, then by the year 2024 they will have starved Salford Council out of about half a billion pounds in funding. Who knows, maybe by then it will "only" be 400 million pounds that this wicked Tory Government will have starved Salford's Labour Council out of, but you get the picture.
And like I said, whenever a Conservative Government is in power in this country, things always get worse. Poverty increases year on year. Crime increases year on year. Homelessness increases year on year. The NHS gets worse, with cutbacks making people wait longer fkr treatment. Public Sector workers lose their jobs. It is always bad for a nation when the sociopathic types from the Old Money families get to govern the UK and engage in their favourite pastime, which is punishing the poor, the low paid and the middle class. You don't have to have a phD in discernment to unerstand this, you simply need to open your eyes.
And it's the same wherever you happen to have a right wing government. This is just one of life's facts. |

Putting investment in housing is a good bet,you always make money with it, that is until salford labour council get wasting it. Why don,t merry and Dennett put their cash into providing housing? They are single blokes with good jobs on plenty of money. |

But it's not just a UK thing. Whenever you have a right wing party in power ANYWHERE in the world, the same things happen. Their philosophy is Get Blood Out of a Stone. All they do is implement social spending cuts, and then lower taxes in some way for their own wealthy class of people. |

Why do we let the people in authority build second rate homes, then let them go to rack and ruin so they have to be pulled down? why do people break into empty property steal boilers etc , then complain they have nowhere to live? Why do people, after being given housing, then proceed to let their kids wreck it.we should all look after what we have and stop all this waste, there is enough misery in this world. |

| @Bob. When I was on Salford Home Search I asked exactly what Band C’s “Local connection” was. Turns out you have a local connection if you’ve lived in Salford for 6 months. So anyone from outside the UK can have a local connection (not sure if it’s the same as this was 5 years ago). So people in B&Bs and hostels usually get housed before other local people who were born here who are often deemed “of least need”, because they’re not in B&Bs etc. If you’re born here you should be housed first, regardless of colour or religion, that’s only right. If you’ve come from a wartorn country you would be grateful for a bedsit. As for non-Brits not working, I couldn’t possibly comment as I have no stats to base an opinion on. Regarding the people in bedsits I think it’s sad and Salford Council is mostly to blame for it. |

| The comments below are not mine. But I fully agree with them and they are certainly true. If you have any doubts just take a look yourself. For choice based lettings, a couple with say 2 kids, who are homeless, will be slightly less priority than a similar homeless couple who have been granted asylum and indeffinate leave to stay. any doubt ask choice based lettings. Likewise, the ones who come to Salford who are asylum seekers, cannot claim housing benefit, they must rely on housing provision from people like serco. Serco pay more for a 3 bed house to private landlords than local housing benefit for the same. Hence landlords rent to serco rather than ordinary people. This is fact.Go on, call us rascist, waiting for it. I am not rascist, I have a lot of sympathy for all the people who seek refuge here from wars caused by tony blair ,bush and their paymasters. I used to work with Iraqi people, and many of them said Iraq was a good place before us and the americans thought to make their country better by destroying it.We ought to get our priorities right, but we never will. |
