SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 1

THE `WILL THE LAST PERSON TO LEAVE SALFORD COUNCIL PLEASE TURN THE LIGHTS OUT' AWARD…

…also known as the `Rats, Sinking Ships, Rearranging Deckchairs and Jumping Ship' Award

This MARY goes to those zillions of Council people who have got the hell out of the fray through retirement, resigning or resigned to the boot…

Come spring next year, there'll be absolutely no-one left at the Civic Centre…Like, no-one… Anyone fancy running a school? Sorting out housing? Looking after the city's kiddies? The jobs yours!

Ladies and Gentlemen… THE `WILL THE LAST PERSON TO LEAVE SALFORD COUNCIL PLEASE TURN THE LIGHTS OUT' AWARD…goes to…

Please do a drum roll and click here…

Er, there's not enough room on the MARY to inscribe everyone's name but here's just a few who are moving on…

BOB OSBORNE - Deputy Director of Sustainable Regeneration. Also known as the head of Salford's housing. Having been there during Salford's first fantastic seventies regeneration, and determined to "get it right" this time around, Bob is unfortunately retiring and won't see his handy work come to fruition. But don't worry, Bob, we've got a special MARY Lifetime Award just for you later in the ceremony

STEPHEN BRADBURY – Head of Salford's BSF Programme – or as we like to know it, Bulldozing Schools for the Future. Stephen decided to retire some time ago at the financial close of Phase 1 of BSF. Bet he's glad he's not in charge of the nightmare that is Phase 2 and 3 and 4.

JILL BAKER – Strategic Director of Children's Services. Scapegoated and sacked for the mess that was Children's Services (see millions of past features)

DR ANTONY EDKINS - `superhead' of Harrop Fold High School in Little Hulton. One in the PFI for Salford Council, as Leader John Merry belittled the Schools Adjudicator's suggestion that St George's move in to Harrop. A few weeks later and the superhead's defected to the United Learning Trust…Why?

DAVID TERRY – Head of the Oasis Academy, formerly Hope High. After getting the best head in the north west award, he's now got a glittering Mary to put next to it on his mantlepiece, as he departs for the more exotic climes of St Helens. Why?

CATH CONNOR – `Children's Champion' – disappeared without a trace around the time of the last OFSTED slating re Children's Services.

BRIAN WROE – Assistant Director, Community Services. This is the guy who
wrote to Salford Star a few years ago telling us our application for community committee
funding had been `deferred' without letting us know why for over a month (turns out they were re-writing the constitution specially for us). Brian's now resigning `with effect from Feb 2010' - is it the guilt, Brian? It's Christmas, we forgive you... Meanwhile, any offers for his job, which carries a salary of between £65,478 to £72,027?

To all of you – and the many more who we haven't heard about – this is your MARY…

Whatever happened to the Children's Champion? Cllr Lindley offered to investigate but he never got back to us. Poor Cath Connor, she had a stressful job perhaps she moved on to greener pastures...!

SALFORD STAR CLOSES AFTER 15 YEARS WITH ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

Star date: 17th May 2021

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

SALFORD HAS 7 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Star date: 17th May 2021

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

Star date: 16th May 2021

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
