MATERNITY SERVICES TO SHUT AT SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL

Star date: 24th January 2017 MIDWIFE UNIT AND CLINICS TO MOVE OUT OF SALFORD ROYAL Salford's Free-standing Midwife-led Unit - created after the closure of Hope Hospital Maternity Unit – plus the ante-natal and post-natal clinics are to be relocated from Salford Royal Hospital to other, undisclosed, locations within the city because of a "demand on space". Antenatal services will relocate from Salford Royal Hospital by 31st March and the birth centre will move by the end of September, although little seems to be in place. Meanwhile, the Salford Clinical Commissioning Group states that...."engagement is being undertaken to assess and understand the impacts on patients particularly in terms of transport and travelling arrangement". Tomorrow, the Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) meets to discuss the closure of the Free-standing Midwife-led Unit (FMU) plus the ante-natal and post-natal clinics at Salford Royal Hospital. Antenatal services will relocate from Salford Royal Hospital by 31st March and the FMU will relocate by 30th September under what a CCG report states will be "new provider arrangements". The reasons given in a report to the CCG are "the imminent demand on space for Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT) as part of the Greater Manchester service transformation plans for Healthier Together" and "the changing shape of maternity services through the Pioneer programme". An undisclosed site that "requires considerable refurbishment to make it fit for purpose" has been identified by the CCG for the Midwife-led Unit, although it doesn't have the funding to `considerably refurbish' it. Apparently, this is still being `sourced'. Meanwhile, the CCG adds, "engagement is being undertaken to assess and understand the impacts on patients particularly in terms of transport and travelling arrangement". However, it explains, "The site is based close to many major road networks and related services and because of this affords the opportunity of opening up the maternity choice offer to Bolton and Wigan..." The idea is to also add Early Years services at the site "to ensure a more cohesive whole family community approach and to trial and share new ways of working". Specialist baby clinics are also to be relocated from Salford Royal. The CCG report explains that "Whilst most generic antenatal services are currently delivered by midwives in community venues across Salford; specialist antenatal services such as sonography, antenatal assessment and joint renal, diabetic and BMI clinics are still delivered on the hospital site". The report states that an "intensive solution focused approach to relocation" is being conducted, with two, undisclosed, possible sites being considered. It adds that the end of February timescale is "ambitious" and that "Relocating these services may require alternative commissioning solutions". The closure of the Free-standing Midwife-led Unit and related services at Salford Royal Hospital has been mooted between the CCG, Salford City Council and Salford NHS for over three years, and has largely been kept out of the public domain "due to the sensitive nature of the content around contracting processes and the need to be clear around communications to provider organisations and the public". Today, on hearing of the report, a midwife told the Salford Star... "Unless we know that these services are moving to somewhere equally as accessible to women as Salford Royal, it shouldn't happen. "In principle there's nothing wrong with moving these services closer to the community but nothing is really clear" she added "These things are so complex you can't just do it. You have to have the midwives organised to run it and everything else that goes with it..." • The Free-standing Midwife-led Unit was created after the full maternity unit at Hope Hospital (as it was called before Salford Royal) shut as a result of a decision by NHS North West in 2011 – see previous Salford Star article – click here • Hope Hospital's full maternity unit was supposed to be safe, after a trade-off disclosed by the then Eccles MP Ian Stewart, that led to the closure of Pendlebury Children's Hospital - see previous Salford Star article – click here

No need for any engagement I can tell you now, women will be traveling further paying more and it will cost these patients more both financially and in terms of health, this will result in more missed appointments and costs to the NHS. Not rocket science is it!! FFS will certain people not be happy until everything is based on Oxford Road? |

| I've been told by a good source that there building offices and a helicopter port !!!!! I had 6 of my 7 children there and I wouldn't of wanted them Any where els , the midwives at hope as
I still call it are the best around , the antenatal midwives are fantastic and I don't see why they woloukd want to close the birth centre for some poxy offices , disgusting not a care or thought for us Salford ladies , st Marys is over rated and is to busy ,
I've also been told st Marys and other hospitals are joining together so you tell me how is that going to work !! |

| Had my daughter here last year in May! No one wants to travel to st marys or Bolton specially when they have no transport I live 5 minutes away from Salford hospital I had to keep going backforwards due to contractions! Seen how far it is to Bolton imagine going their 3 times in a taxi. At hope hospital your partner can stay with you all the way through until your ready to go home! St marys or Bolton hospital won't let anyone stay with you! Let's hope it doesn't close down!! |

| Well well all maternity is to leave Salford Royal (it will always be Hope Hospital to me) well I hope labour are damn well happy with themselves?
This is absolutely disgusting....
Closing down the great and fantastic maternity unit we had in the City of Salford, to be moved where?
To a couple of hospitals that's sometimes in the media - and NOT for good reasons either. The labour government should be well and truly proud of themselves doing this. No more children born in the City of Salford anymore - unless a home delivery. All my children were born in that hospital and the care was utterly fantastic. I wouldn't mind but I bet the ones who made the pathetic and stupid decision to close it arn't even from Salford? Nice one....I so hope all this backfires on you all. 😡😡 |

| Seems to me that children and babies are being targeted. No childrens ward having to stay in hospitals such as wigan for days unable to go home due to transport. Now maternity services, I just had my baby in October and I was back and forth to salford numerous times, the staff are great and make you feel at ease and always take time to make you feel reassured. Where are the actual people that are making the decisions on this, why cant they come out and receive the opinions from families, how dare. How about utilising the old building ?? It may need to refurbished why not do the work on their own building. |

| How can this decision make any sense to anyone ,soon there will be no women's services in Salford at all.
Salford people will eventually be extinct, This was a done deal years ago,public meetings not promoted so big decisions taken without the general population realising the importance of them.sorry for all the Salford mums to be ,traveling way out of area , but this is not the fault of st Mary's this a political decision who's l wonder. |

| There will still be clinics for salford ladies we just don't know where yet! Will still be in the city to avoid travel to St Mary's. Salford Royal need the space back for a clinical service. I nor any of my other midwifes colleagues have ever treated anyone like rubbish ! |

| This is a terrible decision! St marys Manchester is bursting all ready and to shut salford royal birthing centre is saddening. I had my son at the birthing centre April 2014 and was amazing, the midwifes were fantastic and was convenient as I live in Salford. And also I'm from from Salford born and breed want my children to be Aswel. Terrible decision! |

| Terrible that this is closing. I wish I could have had my son there in 2013 as it looked lovely and heard lots of good things about it but had to go to St Marys as I was induced. I found St Marys so impersonal and it did feel like a production line and SO busy (not helped by Trafford General Maternity Unit closing down where I had my first two children which was lovely). |

| I do understand why this has come about, and I think it has been a while in the making. Not that I agree with the decision! However, saying that I am 22 weeks pregnant and having baby on the midwife led unit at Salford was never one of my choices. The unit is too limited in emergency care it offers to women and their babies. As a neonatal nurse, I know all too well things can go very wrong. Its lovely to read all of the nice experiences women have there, and the midwives are so so lovely. But overall probably the safest and most cost effective option for all the northwest mums x |

| I was stuck in st Marys for 8 days waiting for induction as they were busting at the seams. They close twice in 3 days due to the huge capacity of patients due to closure of salford and trafford. Now theyre adding more cuts. Patients and staff are the ones suffering. It cannot continue. My grandma was a proud midwife at Hope Hospital, and would have been heartbroken to see how its turned out. |

| You can opt for a home birth, but as mentioned this is just social cleansing of salford. people mention salford council and that they should stop this, their behind this. The top labour councillors, the merry's, lancaster's, warmashems, are all behind this cleansing programme of salford, yet salford people keep voting labour, thinking labour are for them, labour abandened salford people over 30 years ago, they now only represent the rich and multi national big business. Ps, how many pregnant women are flying in to manchester from countries like Nigeria, getting free treatment costing thousands, taking places we pay tax's for, then fly back out without paying a penny. The NHS needs to crack down on this, this is the national health service, not the international health service. |

| This is discusting I have had all 6 of my baby's at saford royal maternity unit and it is the best place I could of had them the midwifes are all brilliant and it is a lovely unit I wouldn't have made it to any of the other hospitals to have my baby's this would have resulted me having them in the car as I have quick labour's this maternity ward should be left open and assessable to the salford community and these midsized don't get the recondition they deserve they are the best service I have encountered as Bolton and st Marys in my opinion are a let down please keep salford maternity open they work really hard hope this helps lady's xxx |

| This is just horrible! I had my second son at the birth centre at hope in 2014 and had my daughter there on Friday (20.01.2017) the midwives there are AMAZING the facilities are amazing and it is just a lovely relaxed environment to have a baby in! Its disgusting that they are moving it to another location! |

| My daughter was a birthing partner to a friend at St Marys a couple of years back and said it was like a production line. But for her the poor mother would have been alone most of the time! |

| I'm 25 and was born in hope hospital and this moment of time I'm 28 week pregnant and am due to have my son at hope hospital I wouldn't be to happy if they tranfer me to St Mary as I want my son to be salfordian not a manc let's hope they don't close it down would be such a shame if all expected mothers wouldn't be allowed to have the future children thethee |

| Now we are witnessing the final stage of the ethnic cleansing,of the true Salfordian,it has been obvious for some time that this was the aim. no longer will people be able to say, (as I and many others can)I was born in Salford, the shame must fall squarely on the shoulders of the CCG and the council for not fighting it. if it was possible for the unit to be saved then where are our council leaders who should be out in force, but of course they are nowhere to be seen. |

| They will not be happy until the who service offered under the "maternity" banner have been totally removed from Salford.
I am proud to be Salford born & bred and had both my Daughters in Hope hospital, which itself no longer exists, as we knew it.
If they need more space for more services being offered on this site then they should look to buying more land in that area not keep removing services to other areas many outside of Salford. |

| This is awful news, Salford people need to complain about this. Why do we take Trafford patients, oh yes they closed A/E department. How many patients from other areas take the beds, and block them. Now Salford mums given more stress, getting to other places, expensive transport, families visiting these clinics having to travel with children. The money spent on out of area patients could be used for our Salford mums. |

| General thought - I think its high time the managers behind this decision gave the service users of Salford Royal some clear and concise reasons for the closure of this unit. It appears that dedicated staff are being traded off for (possible?) upgrades to the county system. I read a lot about the changes imposed on the cities hospital - I realise the need for specialism - but what happens when there's No Room at Bolton, or St Mary's ? before sneaking out a statement, NHS Northwest should really address the issue of how the ladies of our city are expected to give birth - given they're closing the unit at Hope and expect everyone to be shipped up to Bolton or out to St Marys - GMAS are already at capacity! #Bluesandtwos at the ready folks. |
