With another planning application looming for the Crown Theatre in Eccles, which will almost certainly attempt its demolition, campaigners hoping to save the Grade 2 listed building today held an open day at the Nur Malaysia Community Cafe, a few hundred yards up Liverpool Road from the Theatre.
The idea was to drum up even more support to Save The Crown Theatre, and members of the group and children dressed in period costumes, while the Theatre itself was festooned in bunting and balloons.
Inside the Community Cafe was an information stall, collecting buckets, petitions and free refreshments, including two giant cakes bearing an icing message `Save The Crown Theatre Eccles...Re-build the Eccles Lyceum, the People's Theatre'.
"We're just trying to raise some money and bit of awareness for the Crown Theatre, to get it back into public hands for the local community" explained campaigner, Stuart Potts
"There is a planning application due, where we think they are going to try and put some flats up, although we're not sure until the plans actually go in" he added "We're going to keep opposing it, and we've definitely got the support of the community. The guy who owns the theatre will sell it for around £1million so we need someone with a lot of money, like the Council or the Lottery, to help out. We need a serious investor to help save the Theatre."
