Last December, developers withdrew a planning application to demolish the Grade 2 listed Crown Theatre in Eccles after objections from local councillors, Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey, and members of the community.
Deborah Baker from Indigo Planning told the Salford Star at the time that "We're planning to re-submit in the new year" (see previous Salford Star article click here).
Now, with a new planning application looming, the campaign to Save The Crown Theatre is gearing up for the next battle with a new video and an Open Day next Saturday, 27th February, at the Nur Malaysia Community Cafe, a few hundred yards up Liverpool Road from the Theatre.
The Open Day, which runs 12noon until 2pm, will provide information on what has been achieved so far, what the plans are for the future and how the community can get involved in the campaign.
Meanwhile, a video posted on the groups' Facebook page and on YouTube begins with the question...`Some people see a derelict old building ripe for demolition what do you see?'...
`We see, a beautiful Grade 2 listed building that has been allowed to fall into disrepair by its present (and previous) owners over a number of years... A building with the potential to kick-start the regeneration of the town of Eccles... A building that could become a multi-functional space for the arts, once again making Eccles a place to visit instead of a place to pass through as quickly as possible... A theatre, a music venue, a dance venue, a gallery, a rehearsal space, a community cafe, an educational resource and so much more...'
The video ends with the statement `We see huge potential'... And the campaign has the backing of Rebecca Long-Bailey, who wants "to bring this potentially beautiful building back into productive community use, and even better, community ownership if possible"...

A new petition has been launched to Save The Crown Theatre...
"We the undersigned wish to have this building brought back into public ownership and restored as a prime example of a traditional community theatre, arts hub and museum to match the theatres and cultural venues of other cities.
We want to have a live entertainment venue with a grand history of a famous town behind it, a Grade II building that reflects the past but shines forth into the future, bringing real entertainment to the people of Eccles for generations to come. We must now show our Councillors, Council and owners that we do want this to be restored as a working venue and building of multiple COMMUNITY use.
Why is this important?
The 'Eccles Lyceum Theatre Trust' is now the official organization responsible for raising funds and campaigning to 'save the Crown Theatre Eccles'
The Grade II Listed Building stands proudly on the gateway into Eccles town centre. A great opportunity to bring business, enterprise, education, employment and pride to a town that should not be over looked, it's the heart of Salford. All transport networks lead to ECCLES."
