MOCHA PARADE WASHED OUT...ROADS FLOODED...HOUSES SWAMPED

During early evening yesterday the River Irwell burst its banks leaving a trail of devastation in Lower Broughton, where residents saw over three feet of water swamp the estate...

"It was so fast, just a trickle and then the water went right over the top of our gates, and our car got submerged" one resident told the Salford Star "There were no warnings – I managed to save our telly and the dogs and that's it."

Mocha Parade hit by over two feet of water, while Lower Broughton Road, Broughton Road and Great Clowes Street were amongst roads closed with stranded vehicles abandoned.

After Spike Island was flooded yesterday afternoon, came the Lower Broughton deluge which flooded roads, houses and shops in early evening.

"It was so fast, just a trickle and then the water went right over the top of our gates, our car got submerged and our house was ruined" one resident who lives yards from the River Irwell told the Salford Star "There were no warnings – I managed to save our telly and the dogs and that's it."

Mountain rescue teams from Bolton and Derbyshire joined police and fire fighters to evacuate elderly people living on Lower Broughton Road, while Mocha Parade was washed out with around two feet of water, surrounding roads were flooded and the community helped each other as much as they could.

"Only through the media were we told that we were on red alert" said John Miller who lives on Spike Island "We went out to celebrate Boxing Day and we came back and had to move the furniture upstairs. None of the services came near; they never even offered us sandbags.

"The back garden was flooded and luckily it wasn't enough to come into the house but as soon as we walked fifty yards the place was under water" he added "Where were the MPs and councillors? Not to be seen. It was left to the people of Salford to make sure that their accommodation was safe."

"The water was waist high at times, you were wading" explained Ginge from Lower Broughton "We're in a time of global warming and it's getting wetter. I'd be surprised if this wasn't a yearly thing."

Chris Mahoney from Broughton was helping divert cars away from the flooded roads last night, after aiding his daughter move items upstairs at her house on Spike Island... "Mocha was under water, Oasis was flooded and the water was a good twelve inches high and kept coming" he said "The sewers can't take it and this time the river's come over the banking and a wall. They build the banking higher but the river just goes higher."

Last night the main roads of Lower Broughton remained closed as flood water blocked sections of Lower Broughton Road and Great Clowes Street and many residents couldn't get back to their houses to check on the damage
