GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE ACTED WITHOUT LAWFUL AUTHORITY FOR MONTHS IN SALFORD SAYS SOLICITOR

Barton Moss solicitor, Simon Pook, of Robert Lizar's, has slammed Greater Manchester Police after a further 29 cases related to alleged offences at the Barton Moss anti-fracking protests were discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service on Monday.

Calling for an Independent Inquiry into Barton Moss policing, Pook says "We cannot permit, in an established democracy, police forces arresting and detaining citizens with the knowledge their actions are themselves unlawful"

On Monday, another 29 alleged offences related to the Barton Moss anti-fracking protests were `discontinued' by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), with the total of charges dropped, discontinued or defendants found not guilty, spiralling upwards past the sixty mark, with only a few convictions

However, those who were arrested, charged and faced spells in police cells and prisons, are furious that their cases will not now go to court for them to be found formally `not guilty'.

In a statement today, Simon Pook of Robert Lizar Solicitors which has represented the vast majority of Barton Moss defendants, slammed both the Greater Manchester Police and the Crown Prosecution Service

"On Monday, 29 cases were discontinued by the CPS" he says "Whilst this development is welcomed, it denies my clients the right to have a formal not guilty verdict given to them. We cannot have a system where the police arrest people, detain them, present them before a court, then simply discontinue the proceedings. The CPS has a duty to constantly review cases. How can it be that for five or six months these cases had been considered viable for trial?"

Calling for an Independent Inquiry into Barton Moss policing, Pook explains:

"Since November 2013, Richard Brigden and I advised the Court on the nature of Barton Moss Road. Greater Manchester Police continued to act without lawful authority for a number of months.

"We cannot permit, in a established democracy, police forces arresting and detaining citizens with the knowledge that their actions are themselves unlawful" he adds "Such a position only undermines confidence in the police and justice system. There must be an independent inquiry into the policing at Barton Moss."

* Last week, the CPS dropped charges against eight Barton Moss anti-fracking protectors, including mother of four, Vanda Gillett, who was brutally arrested by the Greater Manchester Police Tactical Aid Unit last February (see here and, for Vanda arrest see here and see here)

Anyone who spent time on that footpath whilst Igas were operating knows how much of a farcical mess the wholly disprortionate and violent policing was. The truth will always find a way to push forward.

Its absolutely mind numbing that this has still only got 5000 signatures?!?! http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/59765 Not only can't the current set of cowards that we live amongst be arsed to even fight for their democracy...they can't even be arsed sending a petition around about it. We so thoroughly deserve to live like sheep and slaves tut bloody tut

i have followed the protest for months now and have seen such brutality in the videos it is totally unwarranted it has always been a peacefull protest the police cannot use brutality arrest and in some cases thrown in prison. this is not democracy. the protesters should have a fair trial and compensation for their suffering and the police need to remember who they serve the public not the corporations !

This gets more puzzling as days go by.What has the CPS been thinking of? Surely they should instigate their own inquiry? and how can the media continue to ignore these anomalies ?The professional legal journals should pick this up at once.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
