BARTON MOSS BRUTALLY ARRESTED WOMAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING POLICE

AFTER BRUTAL ARREST VANDA JAILED AND CHARGED

Monday's brutal arrest of Barton Moss protector and mother of three, Vanda, by Greater Manchester Police Tactical Aid Unit shocked tens of thousands of people around the world who viewed the disturbing film and still images.

Yesterday, incredibly, Vanda was charged with assaulting the police and jailed at Styal Prison for a week until her court hearing on 25th March.

Barton Moss protector, Vanda Gillet, was violently arrested on Monday for the second time* by Greater Manchester Police Tactical Aid Unit, in scenes that sickened tens of thousands of people who viewed the footage (click here), photos and eye witness accounts (see previous Salford Star article – click here).

After her violent arrest at Barton Moss, Vanda was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital - rather than the nearer Salford Royal Hospital - for medics to examine her head wounds. And once discharged was kept in a cell, naked, for four hours.

A press release issued by the Northern Police Monitoring Project tonight states…

"Last night the man who filmed her arrest, Dr Steven Peers, spoke with Ms Gillet for a few minutes. Speaking from Styal prison where she is currently being held, Ms Gillet described to Dr Peers how her clothes had been confiscated following her arrest. She told him that, after four hours naked, she was given a paper boiler suit to wear. Ms Gillet was transferred to Bolton General Hospital and then taken to Bolton Police Station at about 10pm on Monday night.

"At 2am on Tuesday morning, still wearing only the paper boiler suit, she was brought to the custody desk at Bolton Police Station and told that if she accepted conditional bail then she would be released.

"She wasn't prepared to accept the bail conditions" said Dr Speers. "They wanted her to agree to not go back to Barton Moss and she refused. The bail conditions are against articles 10 and 11 of the Human Rights Act."

A Crown Court application for bail was lodged this morning by Ms Gillet's solicitor, Simon Pook."

Yesterday, Vanda was charged with "assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty, resisting a constable in the execution of his duty and assaulting a detention officer" and "remanded in custody to further appear on 25 March 2014" (GMP quote).

Vanda's treatment has led to more pleas from Barton Moss Camp solicitor, Simon Pook of Robert Lizar Solicitors, for the United Nations to get involved.

"Having viewed both the still images and the video of Vanda's arrest, it appears to me that the Tactical Aid Unit appear to be out of control" he told the Salford Star today "This is clear evidence as to why issues must be raised at international level for the Government of the United Kingdom to answer for the Greater Manchester Police tactics at Barton Moss."

At today's large anti-fracking protest in London there were Free Vanda Now! #BartonMoss placards, while Vanda's case, and others, are set to be highlighted further by a Vigil Outside Swinton Police Station For The Barton Moss Protectors this Saturday between noon and 2pm (see Facebook event group here).

A statement by the Justice4BartonMoss group which is organising the event accuses GMP of a `smear campaign' and the denial of human rights…

"This peaceful vigil has been organized by the Justice4BartonMoss campaign" it reads "We are shocked at the level of police at Barton Moss Community Protection Camp and also the media smear campaign by Greater Manchester Police and the shocking heavy handed and disproportionate policing, the incarceration of protectors at Swinton Police Station, and the use of riot police (TAU). Our Human Right to protest peacefully is being taken away."

Meanwhile, at the full meeting of Salford City Council this morning Salford City Mayor, Ian Stewart, said that "every person in the city should be proud that we support the Working Class Movement Library and the People's History Museum" – which document the history of political struggles in Salford and beyond.

His words were underlined by Assistant Mayor Derek Antrobus, who said that the Museum "holds the history of democracy", naming the suffragettes and "other issues worth fighting for…Every generation needs to make sure that their voice is heard" he concluded.

During these discussions, not one word was spoken about the Barton Moss protests, nor their policing or human rights implications. Indeed, it was as if Salford Council and the Salford Mayor are turning a blind eye to events that have been labelled `disturbing' and `sinister' on their own Salford doorstep…

The Salford Star invited GMP to make a comment on Vanda's arrest but it declined.

Alice sadly all Labour Councillors follow they don't lead and each fears getting out of step with it's leadership it would take little more than a few to speak out and you could guarantee some form of action but when you lack any spine I would expect nothing but the behaviour of sheep. What concerns me more is the attitude of the press without the Star championing their case no one in MANCHESTER Salford would have a clue of what is really going on.

Salford Star reports that Mayor Ian Stewart and Councillor Antrobus both referred to political struggles, undertaken by the Suffragettes, the Chartists etc and that they were proud to support the museums which record these valiant people. I would like to remind them that these valiant activists all suffered at the hands of the Police and authorities for benefits we now have and value. It seems to me to be so hypocritical that these comments are made whilst violent acts are being carried out by the police against citizens acting similarly. Why don't you both, and other Councillors too, make a visit and listen to the people at Barton Moss and observe what is happening. Sadly, I fear the police may behave themselves if they think are being watched. I am so disappointed by Salford Council which says nothing and, therefore, condones everything.

We need to all refuse to pay the part of the council tax that pays for police until EVERY officer in GMP is sacked, charged and jailed and replaced with decent honest people. They can take one person to court for failing to pay but they can't taketghem all. Hit the thugs where it hurts, GMP are worse than Hitler.

The Human Rights Act 1998 obliges all public bodies, including courts, to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights. Article 8 provides that: 1. I'm less sure that the police are 'out of control' - they are going back day after day doing the same thing so, surely, the senior police running this are backing up their frontline to do 'whatever it takes'. The buck stops at Fahy and the Crime Commissioner as I believe Fahy is encouraging this behaviour and Lloyd is condoning it.

Clearly the GMP acted like out if control state funded thugs. Tye denial of immediate medical attention was uncalled for. The video clearly shows a diligently built woman bleeding from wounds to the head and mouth. She is also seen restrained in an illegal head lock by an Officer who looks out of control and unaware of the nature of the pain he is inflicting. I am disgusted that British Police Officers are brutalising members of the public and getting away with these abuses of human rights. To detain a person naked in a cell for four hours plus must be a violation of their basic human right to dignity and clothing. I am also highly concerned that thus was a woman and the station will be CCTV monitored. This smacks of the practices used by tye Americans used at Guantanamo Bay and their abuse of prisoners. I trust these circumstances will go before the European Courts because clearly our Government seeks to do nothing on these issues. I have asked my MP, Brandon Lewis, to complain to the Home Secretary for me and I await a response from the Ms May.

I think Mr fahy should stand down as chief constable because he has lost control of his officers and senior officials as well if he don't stand down then he should be made too this cannot carry on too many people are getting injured by these thugs

It is certainly disturbing and sinister that the Council, Mayor and Police Commissioner are silent on this matter. I hope Salford wakes up in time for the elections - whether you're for or against fracking and/or the protests you surely can't be happy that this controversy is completely ignored by those wanting your votes!

It seems to me that by remanding Vanda until the 25th March is a tactacle move as it coincides with the eviction appeal hearing dosen't ? Do they mean to use this to get their way?

The only way to sort this out is Bang Gmp in the European courts along with there paymasters and all the interconnecting telephones that link Clowncil, Gmp,Peel, Igas absolute thuggery from day1 ,!!!!!!!!!!!
