Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 13th annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards, which are given out to honour the most deserving individuals and organisations in the city for their stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities over the past twelve months.

The renowned Salford Star Mary Burns Feed The Rich Award has in the past been won by giants of capitalist greed such as Peel Holdings and Fred Done but this year we have new winners. English Cities Fund

Ladies and gentlemen, for those who don't already know, the English Cities Fund, or ECf, is a partnership between financial warthog Legal and General, Muse Developments and the Government's Homes England, with cheerleading from Salford City Council.

The ECf has outstayed its welcome in Salford, building way unaffordable properties like Carpino Place and Timekeeper Square along Chapel Street and New Bailey, and has had millions of pounds in public subsidies en route. Yet not one affordable property has been built.

The latest development is being branded Atelier Homes, promising "167 luxury 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and 11 luxury 3 bedroom townhouses..." on Chapel Street, and ECf has had more subsidies for this development courtesy of a shady and secretive Development Trust Account (DTA) set up by Salford City Council and ECf at the start of its dealings a good few years ago.

Normally when a developer comes into Salford it would have to pay Section 106 monies for things like infrastructure, affordable housing, public realm etc but under this deal, the monies were paid into a separate Development Trust Account which  is operated "through a steering group comprising the City Council and the applicant"...ie ECf itself.

The ECf basically takes money from profit-making sites to 'cross subsidise' what it calls 'non-viable' sites. In other words, to boost its own profits, set at 15%. After the cross subsidisation, the Council has stated, the fund pays for public realm and, lastly, affordable housing. However, not a penny has been put forward for affordable housing, as far as the Salford Star knows.

In August, Salford Council approved £1,176,819 from the Government's Housing Infrastructure Fund (Marginal Viability Fund) for infrastructure works around the Atelier Homes site, while in June, the Council approved, in secret of course, a £6,437,848 "cross-subsidy from the Development Trust Account (DTA)" for Atelier Homes.

If this wasn't all bad enough, there's a nasty little sting in the tale as the Council is currently trying to evict Mo and his Shalimar convenience store which has stood next to the posh housing site for over 35 years...

"Obviously they don't want it next to their posh apartments" Mo told the Salford Star in June, as he vowed to fight the eviction.

So ladies and gentlemen, sing 'It's clinking clanking sound makes the Salford world go around' and earn a zillion pounds to buy an ECf property, while raising a bottle of Wkd for the winner of the 2019 Salford Star Mary Burns Feed The Rich Award...

Kenny makes a point about a foreign woman who rents out 6 flats at very high rents. He thinks its wrong I presume and so do I.It is obvious that this woman must have borrowed money to buy them, so the people paying rent are in effect buying these flats for her.Why can these people not just pay a mortgage? Liar Boris says he likes owner occupiers, Old cow thatcher liked them, even though our Ray doesn't. The lefties like Ray don't like making comments about people like this woman because they could be seen as racist.Her race is not relevant, AS our Ray puts it, perhaps she is just having a "punt on the housing market".What Ray and his daft crew at Labour are hoping for, is that these poor youngsters who perhaps have two wages going in to pay the rent, will one day have kids and just one wage. they hope that these young people outside the so called housing ladder, will then vote a lefty labour government into power which promises more social housing paid for by raiding the bank of mum and dad. The fucking tories play a similar game,hoping the poorer working classes like these renters, will be too poor to breed by not having houses to live in, and a very poor group that do breed and live in total slums to serve as a warning to others to behave themselves . It will be a way of drilling some sort of social responsibilty into ordinary people and frighten them. Divide and rule. The housing policies of both our main parties will ,I believe, come back to seriously bite their arses. Almost all the of countries in europe do not have a housing shortage. a money shortage yes, but not housing. why do we have one? By the way Kenny ,did you vote labour?

Mo the shopkeeper is still there fighting salford council. This bloke must have been watching ZULU, where about 100 British soldiers at rorke's drift fought against about 4000 zulu's. Salford council should build another shop for shopkeeper MO on the apartments there are building now.

Doreen..@ Middle class yuppies are buying these flats, no sorry, expansive apartments. I call em expansive little boxes. Thirty years from now, Salford will be unrecognizable, and no longer will the name of Salford be synonymous with failure and crime, poverty and teenage pregnancies and disappointing exam results etc. Salford is a booming city. Look at ordsall, its changing, all the people who have been on there for years will be pushed out for the middle class people. All them council houses in ordsall will be bulldozed to make way for Salford quays extension and then the new house prices will be £300,000 plus. . *HAPPY NEW YEAR* to all the regulars on ere, Bob builder, ray(I hate the Tories), Rossi JSA(giro), Kev on Salford twin towers, DJB, Cody, roops, slurp, and that bloke from SS that keeps this rag going, Stephen Kingston. I'm off to a family party now.

One particular block has a foreign owner of Six apartments that she rents out at very high rents. This should not be allowed.

Chapel street ,my area growing up and I still go back to my church as often as possible,the change has been dramatic , I cling to the beautiful buildings still there ,Salford Royal,the Shouting Soldier,the Cathedral,the Education building and my favourite the old Rex cinema, I still feel the character of this area has been lost ,sold off to the developers in the name once again of “ progress “ who buys all these apartments? Are they staying or renting? Just passing through ? Whatever,could be a death knell for community . Goodluck to the shop owner ,he will need it.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
