LIB DEMS HAMMERED IN SALFORD BY ELECTION

Star date: 6th March 2011

WALKDEN NORTH BY-ELECTION SEES LIB DEMS IN LAST PLACE

Nick Clegg's coalition cuts message obviously hasn't reached Salford, as the Lib Dems were hammered into bottom place with just 62 votes in the Walkden North by-election this week.

Full story here…

The Labour Party romped home in the Walkden North by-election last  Thursday, polling over two and a half times the combined votes of all the other parties.

While that was no shock n this solid Labour seat, what was startling was the lack of support for the Lib Dems, as they finished bottom of the poll with just 62 votes, reflecting the `Nick Clegg effect' that hit the Barnsley by-election on the same night.

With a miserly turnout of just 1,786 people, or 20.9%, Labour held the seat with 1,291 votes. Way, way behind in second place were the Tories with 209 votes, followed by the English Democrats with 125 votes, the BNP with 92 votes and Lib Dems with 62 votes.

The new Labour councillor for Walkden North is Brendan Ryan.

Funny old world - when the Lib-Dems win an election its the 'voice of the people' - when they lose its because the system is unfair' - they want to have it both ways. Can't stand the Tories but at least they are more honest than the Lib-Dems. When Labour became the largest Party on the (old) Salford council in the 1930s - the Liberals formed an anti-Socilaist alliance - with the Tories. Beware more Nick Cleggs !

Given the constant diatribe of vitriol thrown at them, i am surprised they got 62 votes. Sorry but whatever their faults and they've definately made some mistakes (but then Labour taking us to an illegal war beats then all still in my view) there is not a proper reporting of what's happening in coalition And they are making a difference in some areas. It's just not being analysed and looked at properly by the media. The Salford Star is usually good at getting to the truth. May be you should start re-balancing things a bit, and without hyperbole and spin, actually list the achievements. Because actually there have been quite a few. Come on, time for some real honest journalism. Separate to this, why not educate the electorate a bit about what coalitions are and that we've had them before. You know 100 years ago today the Liberals were the largest party (what they were once the large party?...oh yeah...they were!!) with Labour propping them And only a few years ago Liberals and Labour shared power in Scotland. How did that play out? Be interesting to educate people a little about the past wouldn't it and then may be we'd all understand a little more of what's actually happening..

In the latest issue of Salford Council's propaganda mag, Life in Salford, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has denounced the "myth" that "developers don't contribute money to the city. It's simply not true" he says.

Yes, they do contribute some money but they also avoid millions of pounds in payments and provision of affordable housing. Indeed, Salford Star analysis shows that developers avoided almost £5.5million in payments last year, as the Mayor only tells half the truth.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS TO GET HUGE PAY RISES

Cash-strapped Salford City Council is to give huge pay rises to senior officers after a 'job evaluation exercise' moved them well up the pay scale. It follows the resignation of the Director of Finance and Corporate Business, and spreading the majority of his salary amongst other re-titled roles.

The Salford Star believes the officers are in line to share around £54,000 between them.
