SALFORD STAR AWARDS 2010

Star date: 17th November 2010

MARY BURNS AWARDS 2010

Nominations for this year's Mary Burns Awards are now open.

The Mary Burns Awards, or Marys as they're affectionately known, are the most uncoveted gongs in Salford, and are awarded only to the most deserving individuals and organisations in the city for their stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities over the past 12 months.

Anyone can nominate an individual or organisation, and you can even make up your own categories…

MARY BURNS AWARDS 2010

This will be the third time that the Salford Star has run the infamous Mary Burns Awards and there are loads of potential winners this year…

Last year the massive total of 40 Marys were awarded in Salford's longest ever awards ceremony, Salford City Council picking up a record 15 Awards for everything from the Uncle Joe Stalin Award for Open and Democratic Government to the Go Stand In The Corner Award For School Building.

Meanwhile, Hazel Blears weighed in with 7 Awards, including the Error of Judgement Award and the Hypocrite of the Year Award. Other notable winners included Peel Holdings (4 Marys), NWDA (3 Marys), Central Salford URC (3 Marys) and Urban Splash (2 Marys)

But who is going to clean up this year? Could it be Salford Council again? Can Hazel Blears still be a winner? Or can the new half a Salford MP Graham Stringer overtake her? We've got big hopes for Graham!

And how about Countryside Properties, LPC Living, MediaCityUK, Urban Splash, NWDA, Peel Holdings…what a year it's been!

If you need any reminders, just put a subject like, er Salford Council, into the search bar at the top of the page and it will bring everything up that we've published this year.

To see the full list of last year's winners plus links to all the individual Awards just click here or go to the Mary Burns page.

To nominate this year's candidates just send us an e-mail to info@salfordstar.com or a Facebook message with:

1) The Award Category

2) Your nominee – company, individual or department

3) The reasons why they should win

The Mary Burns Award ceremony will be held online during December so get your nominations into us by the end of November. There's a special Salford Star prize for the best suggestions!

Sorry, i forgot to name the catagory. Graham Stringer MP for Broughton and Blackley. The Trojan Horse award. Salford should be wary of Mancunians bearings gifts.

Mr Graham Stringer. The Mancunian interloper who seems hell bent along with others to finally make Salford a suburb of Manchester. Goodbye Hope maternity wards. Goodbye Broughton constituancy. Hello Manchester West

As a joint show of solidarity between our two great cities and their environs which are being taken over by Peel Holdings As a joint exclamation of disgust I think that Peel Holdings should recieve the worst award possible award.....please, The worst one you have hail mary reason: because they are arrogant bastards who think they are above the law

It looks like Salford council will run away with it again. May I suggest the categories: Award for the criminally insane, to be given to the council collectively. Award for the permanently Baffled, to be given to the city planners. The award for: We couldn't give a fuck what you say, we'll do what we want, to be awarded jointly to the city's health trust and housing dept. Finally the award for: It serves you right, to be awarded to all those who voted for this council or didn't cast their vote at all in the last local election.

*applauds* Sooo many deserving recipients this year! I have to say a few individuals have managed to redeem themselves, others just changed their name and moved house. Are you having a ceremony this year? I'll book a table. Bring your own White Lightning!

'FOR ME, IT'S ALL BEING COVERED UP...'

Last Friday, a homeless man from Salford sadly died after living on the streets in Manchester city centre; the latest, many believe, in a spate of such incidents.
