SALFORD KIDS HIGH RISK AGAIN

Star date: 28th May 2010

SALFORD COUNCIL CAN'T EVEN SPELL `SAFEGAURDING' NEVER MIND DO IT!

So, after all that happened last year – and the year before, and the year before that and the year before that etc – over the shocking state of Salford City Council's dire attempts to safeguard our kids, the subject is still `HIGH RISK' according to the latest Council `Strategic Risk Register'.

Not surprising really because the Council can't even spell "safegaurding"…Oh, and confidential Child Protection reports are being left on the streets too!

Full stury hear…

So, Jill Baker, Head of Children's Services, has been sacked; loads of staff at the department have left - and Councillor John Warmisham, who refused to resign as Lead Member for Children's Services, has been shunted out of harms way, in the post local election re-shuffle, to Salford's excellent Adult Services (God help them!). But still our kids are High Risk.

The latest Salford Council `Strategic Risk Register' puts safeguarding in a big red High Risk box, stating "Practice in safeguarding children may develop with insufficient pace or sustainability".

The report goes on to describe all the great measures that are in place – `report cards', `monitoring of progress', `project management' and other such waffle - but the fact remains that the safeguarding of our kids is still `High Risk', er, as it was in the previous `Strategic Risk Register'.

Perhaps the Council should learn to spell the word `Safeguarding' which would be a great start. The report is titled `Safegaurding'

PS. Would the Council like me to return a confidential Child Protection Conference report, complete with names, addresses and full family history, handed into the Salford Star after it was found on the street for anyone to see?

Just e-mail maryburns@salfordstar.com , ask nicely and I'll return it…

Update: 7pm 28th May

Earlier today Salford Council did ask nicely and the Confidential document was returned, after it had been passed around The Racecourse pub...only joking.

The problem is that the Council said they hadn't lost it, that none of their reports had gone missing. Very strange. Apparently, `several' other people had access to the document with SALFORD CITY COUNCIL stamped across it, and it could have been one of them who left it lying in the street for anyone to see. That's very reassuring...

SALFORD COUNCIL COURT COSTS

Star date: 7th September 2010

THE QUEEN CHASES SALFORD COUNCIL FOR OVER £500,000

Never mind the summons for your Council Tax, Salford City Council itself is now being chased by `Her Majesty's Court Services' for over half a million quid it owes for five year's rent and stuff on Bexley Square, site of the old Salford Town Hall and now the city's main courthouse.

As Salford Council tries to stop Her Maj merging its courts with Manchester following the no-show of the new Eccles court building, there's the little matter of the £578,468 bill to settle – or the Council could find itself in the court rather than fighting for its survival.

HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SCANDAL

Star date: 6th September 2010

REPORT RECOMMENDING HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SHOULD STAY OPEN WAS `IGNORED' AND CONSULTATION WAS `BIASED'

An official report recommending that Hope Hospital's Maternity Unit should stay open was "ignored" and there was "a clear indication of bias" in the consultation proceedings, according to a new document produced by midwives.

The document states that "there was never a chance of maternity and neonatal services being retained at Hope, from the very start of the consultation process". And, as a result of population increase, it adds, "We judge that the new unit at St Mary's will be barely able to meet the needs of its own population let alone that of Salford…"

KEEP HOPE MATERNITY OPEN RALLY ATTRACTS HUNDREDS

"Why has the almost 100% opposition to this, been arrogantly ignored?" Mike Sweeney

Hundreds of people wearing Born In Salford t-shirts gathered in Buile Hill Park on Saturday to show opposition to plans to shut down the Maternity Unit at Hope Hospital, now called Salford Royal.

Backed by Ryan Giggs, Mike Sweeney, John Thompson and Salford Reds, the campaign is gathering renewed momentum as pressure mounts on the new government to reverse the decision to close Salford's baby unit.

Yesterday, Albert Park in Broughton hosted a top family fun day as the sun shone over Salford. There was everything from donkey rides, to a big wheel, to the brilliant Cirque de Salford.
