Star date: 25th June 2020

RE-TWEET SEES SALFORD MP SACKED BY KEIR STARMER

Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey has been sacked as Shadow Education Secretary by Labour Party Leader, Keir Starmer, this afternoon after re-tweeting a Maxine Peake interview that featured in the Independent.

The actress had said in the interview that "The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd's neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services", an allegation that the paper later wrote was "unfounded".

This afternoon, Salford and Eccles MP, Rebecca Long Bailey has been sacked as Shadow Education Secretary by Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer.

The Salford MP had re-tweeted the link to an interview with Salford resident and actress Maxine Peake by the Independent, in which the Peterloo star had said on the subject of Black Lives Matter: "Systemic racism is a global issue...The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd's neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services."

The paper originally added in brackets to the article that: "A spokesperson for the Israeli police has denied this, stating that 'there is no tactic or protocol that calls to put pressure on the neck or airway'". It later added: "This article has been amended to further clarify that the allegation that US police were taught tactics of 'neck kneeling' by Israeli secret services is unfounded. The original version did carry a denial from Israeli police, however we are happy to further clarify the matter..."

Keir Starmer later justified his decision..."I'm just very clear about my focus and that is rebuilding trust with the Jewish community. I do not consider sharing that article furthered the course of rebuilding trust with the Jewish community and that's why I stood Rebecca Long-Bailey down."

In response, Rebecca Long Bailey tweeted... "Today I retweeted an interview that my constituent and stalwart Labour Party supporter Maxine Peake gave to the Independent. Its main thrust was anger with the Conservative Government's handling of the current emergency and a call for Labour Party unity.

"These are sentiments are shared by everyone in our movement and millions of people in our country. I learned that many people were concerned by references to international sharing of training and restraint techniques between police and security forces" she added.

"In no way was my retweet an intention to endorse every part of that article" she explained "I wished to acknowledge these concerns and duly issued a clarification of my retweet, with the wording agreed in advance by the Labour Party Leader's Office, but after posting I was subsequently instructed to take both this agreed clarification and my original retweet down.

"I could not do this in good conscience without the issuing of a press statement of clarification" she added "I had asked to discuss these matters with Keir before agreeing what further action to take, but sadly he had already made his decision.

"I am proud of the policies we have developed within the party from our Green Industrial Revolution to a National Education Service and I will never stop working for the change our communities need to see" she concluded "I am clear that I shall continue to support the Labour Party in Parliament under Keir Starmer's leadership, to represent the people of Salford and Eccles and work towards a more equal, peaceful and sustainable world..."

Update: 5:45pm

Salford Kersal Conservative Councillor Rabbi Arnie Saunders tells the Salford Star:

“For somebody in her position it was irresponsible to re-tweet something that quite frankly was rather crass. It was stated that the Israeli police trained the Minneapolis police, which has been denied. But even if it was true, how does that make them responsible for what a rogue policeman did?

“It’s absolutely crass and irresponsible and I think the Salford Labour Party should also distance themselves from it, particularly as it’s not the first time a Salford Labour politician has been embroiled in anti semitic controversies.”

At the end of the day this is not about Zionism or antisemitism. It's about our being stupid enough to re-tweet something that was false and unfounded and then being so arrogant to amend only on her terms. She gave the party leader an excuse to fire her. ***But instead of re-tweeting her showbiz friends, whose views count more to her then her other constituents. She should be asking Salford Council why in a poverty stricken city they can afford to not collect £10m in council tax off people who should pay. Or she should have been saying to the government "What about my constituency where people have died from covid where poverty is a huge issue."

lets have a bi-election. liebour will never get back in power. Starmer is tinted by his time a DPP and the rape gangs operation in every town and city. Sign the petition to force the release of the report. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300239

It's pretty obvious the retweet was an excuse to get rid of her. The real reason is that she wants to follow the same lines as Corbyn (based on her leadership plans) which, clearly shown in recent elections, is the wrong direction for the Labour Party and those people need to be removed.

The clean out is picking up pace now. Rebecca (10 out 10 for Jeremy) Long Bailey was never going to last. All those tub thumping Momentumites will be walking the plank at some point too. This is going to be a purge lefties normally dream about. Only it's not supposed to be them that gets the bullet!

I am surprised and angry about the unjust act of Keir Starmer. To sack RLB for supporting Maxine shows some lack of knowledge about attitudes to Israel. There is ‘anti semitism’ and ‘anti Zionism’ .The former is against the Jewish culture and the latter disagrees with the politics of the current Israeli Government which follows Zionism. Many people , including some Jewish people, disagree with Zionism as do many non Jewish people disagree with the action of Israel in Gaza and the West Bank. Maxine has just returned from Palestine but she is not anti Semitic but against the unjust actions against Palestinians. Jeremy Corby likewise is against these actions and I assume so would RLB be. Keir Starmer is over keen to remove the exaggerated slur against the Labour Party. He should apologise to LLB and I would like to have a talk with Arnie Sanders as my Councillor.

It was only a matter of time before that hen pecked metrosexual Smarmy Starmy got rid of Miss Becky. It is well known he doesn't like her,I suggest it might be down to the company she keeps with these rough arsed militant types who are not to his liking. With the possible exception of Ms Peake, you couldn't invite any of that lot to Starmies London dinner parties for the Labour chattering classes.Miss Becky is certainly not racist or anti semitic in any way. If she was, no doubt our jewish community here would have a lot to say about it. Re the George Floyd case, I have a feeling there is more to come out about it. On TV the other night, Mr Floyds cousin said the motive was "personal". What did he mean by that? Mr Floyd does not appear to be resisting arrest. It seemed to me that perhaps Mr Chauvin might have using this excessive force to prevent his victim talking. But what could the victim want to say? Something fishy here.

Please stop voting for Anti-semites. Please stop voting for racists. Period. Stay away from social media which is a cesspool of racism. We can all have a better tomorrow if we all realise we are all humans with hopes, dreams and aspirations and we all above all else, deserve respect.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
