Four well known women from Salford and Manchester - Alison Surtees, Natalie Wayne Dolan, Yvonne Ellis and Suzi Hoffmann have set up Covid-19 Sing4Safety, a fundraiser for women locked down in abusive homes. The aim is to raise £2,000 towards Women's Aid's target of £200,000, with different singer/songwriters and spoken word artists giving a video performance to publish every day...
"It just got so depressing hearing that five women a week had been killed in their own homes since lockdown and in London, 100 calls a day to police about domestic violence" they explain "We are all here because we understand the issues, first hand and through friends, family and wider networks.
"We want to publish a new song or spoken word piece every day on multiple platforms and in return we're asking for donations to Women's Aid" they add.
Already, over £1,000 has been raised and Briana Corrigan, ex-Beautiful South, has joined as Ambassador and spokesperson for the campaign...
"I'm honoured to be part of this project and want to do everything I can to help it succeed" she enthuses. Peggy Seeger, iconic American folk singer and wife of Ewan MacColl who helped make Dirty Old Town Salford's anthem, is giving a song and says "Sing4Safety is a wonderful, much needed project".
"Lockdown has worsened the existing problem of violence in the home with calls to domestic violence help lines increasing by half and national charities suspecting that many more women may be suffering in silence" state the organisers
"According to Amnesty International UK, 72% of us want more done to protect victims. No one deserves to live in fear in their own home; it's not just women, but children who are suffering too" they add "They need these services and even more so when lockdown finishes, Women's Aid may be overwhelmed with cries for help."
