Manchester United midfielder, Salford based Angel Gomes, has praised 12 year old Ordsall girl, Jasmine Rose, who has been collecting litter and raising money for the NHS during her one hour daily exercise.
"Amazing work" tweeted Gomes to his 365,000 followers "She's setting a great example."
Fellow Salfordian and boxing legend, Jamie Moore, also tweeted support..."This is brilliant, well done Jasmine".
Her dad, Gary, says she is "overwhelmed with the support" for her efforts, in which she is aiming to pick up 50,000 pieces of litter during the lockdown...
"I decided to look at myself during this lockdown and what I could do to help in any way I can" Jasmine writes in her JustGiving appeal to raise money for the NHS* "I'm 12, I mean what can I do, right? Wrong, there is lots I have been able to do within the remit on the current rules and guidelines under lockdown. I will check on some of my elderly neighbours whilst maintaining social distancing...
"...I get my daily exercise every day of one hour walking...and on my route I pick up any litter I come across to help clean up my streets and neighbourhood" she adds "Some days I pick up four carrier bags worth of rubbish that over time has built up but I am walking that way anyhow so why not do my bit.
"I use it as a form of exercise" she explains "I can bend down and pick it up and do a star jump on the way up or lunge on the way down or a press up on the way up, so by doing this is helping me and my community to try and make things better in lockdown."
Jasmine does a different route each day picking up rubbish, even from the canal water around the Quays, and has designed a poster which she puts up in conspicuous places urging people not to drop litter to save the planet.
"My generation may never go through anything like this ever again and the learning from how we behaved in lockdown and the extra steps we took to protect each other and our planet we can use to teach and tell our kids and grandkids in the years to come...of how family's put their phones down and their computer pads and spent good quality family time together, even in times of hardship" Jasmine states "...COVID-19 has started taking the lives of people my age and younger so it has really brought home the issue the world faces.
"I will keep pushing forward with my daily exercise and doing what I can, and hope to raise awareness all over the city that even on lockdown and the conditions in place we can still use initiative and combine exercise with helping the planet at the same time" she concludes "...if you see my signs this may be a reminder for you just to have a look around and use exercise and pick up litter at the same time so we can make our planet a better place after COVID-19..."
