Over one third of coronavirus-related deaths in the city, up to 17th April, have been in care homes, new figures from the Office for National Statistics, or ONS, show.
Up until that date, there were 58 virus-related deaths in Salford care homes, four deaths at home and 109 in hospital. This is the second highest number of virus-related care home deaths in the country. Only County Durham has more with 67.
Meanwhile there is some better news, as new confirmed cases of the virus in Salford increased in single figures, despite a supposed increase in testing – up by nine from 558 the previous day to 567.
This slowing of new cases is also reflected throughout Greater Manchester, with Manchester now standing at 1,033 cases (up by 22), Stockport 780 (up by 15), Bolton 717 (up by six), Wigan 595 (up by 15), Oldham 576 (up by six), Trafford 565 (up by 12), Tameside 440 (up by ten), Bury 429 (up by four) and Rochdale 414 (static).
Whether this is just a reporting anomaly will become apparent over the next few days. Salford Royal Hospital has also reported no new deaths for the second day in a row.
Today is National Postal Workers Day, and is a chance for people to thank their postal workers for keeping the mail delivered during this crisis, six days a week to 29million addresses.
Postal workers have not only kept delivering mail and parcels but have also been checking on the elderly and taking shopping to the most vulnerable in society. Their trade union, CWU, states that this has been in spite of management intransigence that has forced them keep delivering advertising mail, while refusing to meet regularly with the union at the highest level, and the top bosses running the company from outside the UK.
"Postal Workers in the North West as well as across the country are doing a fantastic job" says CWU Regional Secretary Carl Webb "It is sad that senior management have not recognised the efforts of our members but the public have. The sight of posters in windows, drinks left on doorsteps or even a simple 'Thank you' means the world to our members...
