THE £33MILLION ‘PERILOUS’ COST TO SALFORD COUNCIL OF CORONAVIRUS

Star date: 21st April 2020 GOVERNMENT URGED TO PROVIDE EXTRA FUNDING OR SALFORD FACES MORE CUTS Despite the Government offering Salford a share of £3.2billion announced for local councils to help fight the coronavirus pandemic, the city faces a 'perilous' financial position unless the full costs of coping are covered. In a letter to the Prime Minister, City Mayor, Paul Dennett, estimates that the additional costs for the first six months of the virus fall-out will be approximately £33million which could lead to more cuts. Meanwhile, there have been a further 19 confirmed cases in the city, and Salford Royal Hospital has announced a further two sad deaths. Full details here...

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has written to the Prime Minister calling for the Government to 'fully fund' the £33million additional costs of Salford Council's response to the coronavirus crisis.
The Government initially handed a share of £1.6billion to councils, and followed this up at the weekend with the announcement of a further £1.6billion – but added that local government must 'share the burden' of the crisis. Dennett writes that he is "concerned by the changing language" and that "Anything less than full cost recovery would leave local councils in a perilous financial position after ten years of austerity"... The £33million additional costs are an estimate for the first six months of the year from a "loss of income and additional demands placed on all our services". These include adult social care, children's safety and welfare, and access to education, support for victims of domestic abuse, business advice, and support to vulnerable residents... "We are legally required to set a balanced budget" he adds "Anything less than full funding for the costs of our response to coronavirus will only mean one thing – further cuts to local services...cuts to the very services we – and you – have relied on to support our residents in this crisis... "Anything other than full funding of local government for our response and funding for longer term financial stability would be a betrayal of the critical front line workers in local government and of the people of Salford" he concludes. Meanwhile, confirmed cases of coronavirus in Salford have increased by 14, up to 464 from 445, while Salford Royal Hospital has announced a further two sad deaths.

| I disagree with the renewed attakk on Wealthy Felse and welcum him back. Why. Cos if that Mayor don’t get the Gov’s £33million it means the Salford Council budget will still be £33milliom down. It will take a Mr Felse to stop Council Tax having to double in every house for us to pay the debt hole. How much will each Councillor be surcharged when it goes bust. I make it £550,000 each. Better to let Council Go into bankruptcy to wipe the slate and to see Him start us off a fresh and the Councillors be surcharged than make us ordinary people’s pay their debt. |

| If Mayor Dennett can fully answer the call to justify the £33million out of pocket extra spending and confirm Salford Council has no valued asses stashed we would welcome such transparency. I do wish happy St George’s Day to all Salford Citizens. |

| As requested by someone earlier, could the mayor please provide a detailed list of what extra costs have been incurred to justify the £33 million pound request.
Several council services appear to have been snowballed over the last few weeks although I did notice what appeared to be a half hearted attempt to cut the grass in parts of Roe Green and parts of the East Lancs Road, no cuttings have been picked up.
On the other hand top marks to the refuse collection teams in our area, they have been excellent. |

| What about the £90 million they have in reserve. If they did not waste our money on silly projects and stop letting builders build for free, then they might, just might not cry hard up so often. |
