Star date: 31st March 2020

ECCLES POLICE ISSUE 'WHY ARE YOU HERE?' TICKETS

As the confirmed number of coronavirus cases in Salford increases by twelve, to 104, the Eccles team of Greater Manchester Police is issuing tickets to motorists asking 'Why are you here today?', in relation to those using vehicles to travel to parks and similar places for exercise.

Meanwhile, a banner has been placed outside Salford Royal Hospital stating 'You are not alone, Manchester is with you', while the Sounds of Salford radio station has been re-born for those staying home.

The Eccles policing team has begun slapping tickets on the windscreens of cars that they suspect have been driven to locations for exercise.

Titled 'Why are you here today?', the tickets state...

"The government restrictions currently in place Do NOT permit you to use your vehicle to travel to this location to exercise. Each and every one of us have been instructed to AVOID UNNECESSARY TRAVEL...

"You are entitled to exercise once daily and this should be done by walking, cycling or running etc from your home address. You should not be driving away from your address to carry this out..."

Both the Eccles police team and Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that the tickets are genuine... "you can appreciate how fast-moving this situation is for policing and we advise people adhere to guidelines stated by the Government..." a GMP spokesperson told the Salford Star.

Meanwhile, coronavirus in the city continues to rise, with the latest number of confirmed cases in Salford standing at 104, twelve up on the previous day.

Manchester currently has the highest number of cases in Greater Manchester, with 109; Oldham has 101, Stockport 93, Trafford 86, Rochdale 78, Tameside 62, Bury 59, Wigan 53 and Bolton 47.

A banner has been placed outside Salford Royal Hospital stating 'You are not alone, Manchester is with you', as the Sounds of Salford Radio has been re-born by DJ and poet Simon Williams under the banner 'Keeping it real by keeping it raw'.

Update: 9am

The GMP have now stated that such tickets are no longer being issued as "they were in relation to a particular car park in Eccles that was overcrowded but has since been closed..."

@Riley. Exactly. As Trump would say, "FAKE NEWS". I got a "ticket" on my windscreen a few months ago for a local car wash.

Not really 'tickets' are they? Implying they are makes the reader think they are fines. So they were nothing more than notes of advice. Poor journalism.

Mr Gove, in a TV interview when all this was starting, stated that driving to a spot that was uncrowded was acceptable. The emphasis wa son uncrowded.

Driving to exercise may be unwise, but it is not prohibited by the emergency powers. Also the law does not restrict people to exercising outside only once a day, even though that may also be unwise. If a government issues orders or expresses preferences with no legal authority, and the police then enforce the government's wishes, this is called a police state.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
