WALKDEN AND LITTLE HULTON VOLUNTEERS OFFER HELP DURING VIRUS CRISIS

Star date: 24th March 2020 CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT GROUP IN WALKDEN AND LITTLE HULTON Volunteers are offering everything from a friendly phone call to dog walking and collecting prescriptions for people in Little Hulton and Walkden... "It's to help our local community with whatever they might need" says Gemma Fish who has set up the group. A new community support group will be distributing ten thousand leaflets around Walkden and Little Hulton offering a wide array of support during the coronavirus crisis. Volunteers are offering everything from a friendly phone call to dog walking, to delivering shopping and supplies, collecting prescriptions and more. They will be asking for no payment, nor asking for payment of any goods they collect without showing receipts, and will never ask to enter your home. "It's to help our local community with whatever they might need, including getting food, drink, prescriptions etc" says Gemma Fish who set up the group "We'll be delivering ten thousands leaflets – printed free - to as many people as possible." Anyone who is struggling to cope in Walkden or Little Hulton is urged to call 0800 009 6605. Meanwhile, for the wider community, Salford City Council has set up a 'Spirit of Salford' Helpline offering similar services – for more information click here.

| What people do not realize is that both of our main political parties actually need people to be seen dossing down on the streets. The Conservatives like it to be a threat to ordinary people as to what might happen to them if they slip down and off the housing ladder through not paying the rent ,mortgage etc, how people need to tow the line or they might end up there. To encourage the others to behave is a phrase I often hear. The Labour view is that by having these people on the streets, they can show to people how heartless the Torys are to these poor people and that something must be done,namely,vote for the kind Labour party who will help these people. Having people dossing on the streets has no place in our society, and lets face it ,some of these homeless begging for beer and drug money can be intimidating to some people.It also makes no economic sense. These homeless, and I presume jobless as well, are entitled to housing benefit which I am told is about 110 pounds a week. We could build tiny studio flats for these people, warm and a roof over peoples head,and an address to get dole from. This could be done and make a profit for someone running it, but it would take local councils to give up some of the land they got for nothing when they pulled all the older houses down. But they wont do this, these greedy bastards are waiting till they get a labour government that will buy it off them, which will be never. So Labour councils either put your land up or stop going on about the torys you might fool the people, but you cannot fool us guys who know how much flats and houses cost. Just a tiny chunk of that land where Clari school was could house all the homeless on the streets for greater manchester. Just give me a bit of it and I'll show you what can be done. |

| are you for real darren thick in the head the city council are doing the right thing the reason and cause of the awful position that homeless people find themselves on the streets housing benefit reductions no housing benefit at all the bedroom tax benefit sanctions the absolute nightmare of trying to get benefits and universal credit where all benefits are rolled into one which translates in to getting nowt something which unfortunately many people are going to learn pretty fast when they try to claim people are going to become very angry and that anger should be directed at the tory party they introduced cuts year in year out not any council the councils have been robbed of billions in the last ten years kick out the tories the destroyers of public services and the benefits system . |

| It's a great shame. it's took this "big flu bug" to finally sort out our homeless and put them up in hotels. There is lots of council flats empty around MCR. MCR COUNCIL should have already have this sorted, but for years we have starving homeless people sleeping rough every night in the city centre. Shame on MCR council and all councils. |

| great to see man city council have started to house rough sleepers and homeless people in hotels taking them of the streets . i had to go to city centre today to top up electricity and gas cards for neighbours /pensioners living on our estate which houses many elderly people obviously they cant go out one elderly man was nearly out of credit on his prepayment meter some used pay zone and others pay point outlets to get energy put on the card i was running about all over the place looking for shops that accepted which card or other if anybody else needs to top up go to the post office i went to spring gardens in the end these cards are a nightmare the utilities need to go out to the older people and top up the meter right now and the government need to provide extra money for the old and disabled to pay the very high cost of gas and electricity if you are at home all day and nite people are going to be using a lot more energy for heating and cooking and many cant afford both thousands of old people died from the cold last year and the weather is still pretty cold cold weather payments could be paid quite easily to keep our old and disabled warm . |
