SALFORD CABBIES, JOURNALISTS AND MORE DEMAND HELP FOR SELF EMPLOYED DURING VIRUS CRISIS

Star date: 22nd March 2020 PETITION CALLS FOR MORE HELP FOR SELF EMPLOYED As the coronavirus crisis kicks in, self employed people, including cabbies, journalists and those working in the gig economy, are losing all forms of income with potentially horrendous consequences. Now, Rob Berrisford has launched a petition calling for the Government to pay the self employed 80% of last year's turnover, while the National Union of Journalists is calling for a 'base salary' or compensation. 'It's nothing short of discrimination!'
While the Government has protected employees caught in the midst of the coronavirus with 80% of wages, so far, the self-employed have been offered nothing except a direction to the benefits systems.
Now, Salford's Rob Berrisford has launched a petition to Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling for the self-employed to be given 80% of last year's turnover. "I've set up a petition to try and get the government to reconsider their stance on directing the self employed to the benefits system" he says "We should be getting a much better deal as workers are having their wages guaranteed to 80%." The full petition reads... "The self employed need more help than being directed towards the benefits system. Many self employed people are suffering massively right now. With food to buy and bills to pay, SSP is not going to come anywhere near close to being useful. Why should the government back employers to pay 80% of wages whilst the self employed have a very real possibility of bankruptcy, losing our homes, and our livelihoods. It's nothing short of discrimination! "The self employed should be offered 80% of last year's turnover - not just our profit as we still have depreciating assets and all kinds of payments to adhere to. I urge that this needs your most urgent attention at our time of need. Hundreds of thousands of taxi drivers and private hire drivers have especially been hit very hard by this crisis across the entire UK as our business is the movement of people. Our industry has effectively stopped overnight with no hope in sight..." The petition, only set up one day ago, already has over 900 signatures – to sign click here Meanwhile, the National Union of Journalists is also calling for more help from the Government... "We are working with our cross-party Parliamentary Group to continue to put pressure on the UK government to make changes to sickness and other benefits to include freelances who are losing work" it states "The union has called for financial protection for freelances during the Covid-19 pandemic and, together with the Federation of Entertainment Unions, an income guarantee to protect self-employed workers in the arts and media. The TUC is in talks with ministers, calling for a joint union-government taskforce to ensure that workers, including freelances, and small businesses are protected and have access to financial support. "As we hear more and more reports of our freelance members losing all their work for the foreseeable future and desperate financial hardship, we understand from one MP that the government are discussing a package of measures to help the self-employed – potentially a 'universal basic income'" it adds "Other countries are providing compensation or a base salary for the self-employed and we urge the government to follow that course..."

| How kind of Darren to worry about as he puts it, "Dept collectors". I have seen with my own eyes what some of these unscrupulous Mother XXXXXXX get up to. Going round to peoples houses dressed up like paramilitary coppers with protective stab jackets and military style boots. They are the greedy gofers of the ursury regime that runs our economy. Many of them use fear and intimidation tactics, telling lies to get into peoples homes to seize their goods.They are the scum of the earth picking on people weaker than themselves. I hope the lot of them are the first to get this pox thats knocking around.

| Salford has over 1500 self employed taxi drivers. Salford has quite a few self employed people. Dept collectors, hundreds of builders, window cleaners, plumbers, personal trainers, dog walkers, hundreds of hairdressers/barbers etc.. In the UK there is about 5 million self employed people and MOST of them do pay TAX every year,(if profit is over £10 grand a year). They don't exactly put down what they earn, but are entitled to something off the government in there time of need.. Help the self employed NOW. |

| 80% of base turnover? The 80% figure is for people whose earnings the revenue are confident about . Can you honestly say HMRC will be confident about the level of revenue or profit all of the self employed declare. Some of them begrudge paying a bean in tax and consider it something of a right to pay practically nothing.I doubt if the tax take from all those Manchester taxi drivers mentioned by another poster pays for a single doctor's salary . Yet they'll be sucking thousands out of the exchequer in the way of benefits. And some of the them shouldn't even be here. If the Govt are going to give anything it should be somewhere south of 80% to compensate for the money kept in the back pocket by a sizeable number. |

| i witnessed some nauseating sites in my life but to see boris johnson stood behind a sign saying protect the NHS leaves me felling ice cold and red with rage since the advent of thatcher the tory party as destroyed and degraded the NHS through privatisation the selling off of state/hospital land setting up so called trusts and the demolishing of hospitals up and down the country i remember in 1981 nurses collecting money at agecroft colliery where i worked they were under attack and there wages were appalingly low at this time cleaners were being privatised at north manchester general hospital there wages terms and conditions smashed these women came to the pit gates with tears in there eyes all they wanted was a decent living for the hard work they did many of them were of the windrush generation it still upsets me today when i think of how hard they fought to save the NHS and there jobs they paid the price of thatchers ideological destruction of the NHS on the alter of free market dogma this failed corrupt system destroyed our industrial base farming fisheries selling off all our assets to foreign owned internationals at knock down prices with many members of the tory party taking directorships and becoming major share holders screwing the workers of the uk .in 2010 the wheels came off the bandwagon and through sheer greed and negligence we have had to endure 10 years of austerity . its time to roll back the years of failed thatcherism reinstitute the welfare state renationalise all industries and utilities a fully funded NHS no more sqaundering billions on nuclear weapons this country was allegedly broke at the end of the second world but still we laid the foundations of a welfare state and were able to create a more caring society it is strange just before the last election when labour and mr corbyn offered free broad band and other sensible policies to even up the divided economy and spread wealth more justly the tories under johnson went hysterical claiming britain would be bankrupted well mr johnson as spent a hell of a lot more fighting the corona virus quite rightly than mr corbyn envisaged spending to make britain a fairer more just place the working people will not put up with being left to pick up the bill for covid 19 . |

| Good to see Darren so concerned about our taxi drivers. You know, the ones that sit on their arses at taxi ranks in the airport for hours waiting to rip us off. Never seen it in Salford, but at the airport and in Manchester,many is the time when the face of the guy behind the wheel does not look a bit like the face on the badge in the back. The taxi enforcement people in Manchester seem to turn a blind eye to this, and we all know why. If a Salford Black cab driver coming out of Manchester just picks up a fare on the wrong side of the water, the Manchester enforcement team will have his guts for garters. Don't believe me on this, just ask a Salford black cab driver. As for me, I am getting around in my little mobile self isolation unit. Its great seeing the roads so clear. Not for me your virus infested public transport system. |

| There is over 1500 salford taxi drivers working in salford. Salford taxis get work during the day of people going to work and back(90% off work places are now SHUT), salford taxis get fares from salford university(now SHUT) and manchester university(now SHUT), salford taxis take kids to school and college in the morning and pick students up in the afternoon(now SHUT), salford taxis get jobs from hope hospital, Manchester MRI, and the hospitals in surrounding areas(now mostly SHUT). Old people 60 to 90years old who use salford taxis 2/3 times a day to go to doctors,shops,bingo halls, friends houses and community groups etc are mostly staying in because they don't want this "big flu bug". Salford taxis that work nights are suffering with pubs, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cinemas, etc all SHUT. Salford People use taxis all the time.. Most of salford taxi drivers have quit working this week. They are all self employed. The government promises to help the self employed, but it could take 6weeks for any of our salford taxi drivers to get there money of the government. |

| all workers should and must be protected 100 per cent not 80 per cent because directing people to the so called benefits system will mean you get a lot less than even 80 per cent for example JSA 73 pound a week and a 5 week wait for a payment. the bankers were bailed out to the tune of 750 billion by the taxpayer thats the workers who are now being told to take a massive cut to there earnings johnsons taking us for mugs in the last budget the tories had an oppurtunity to deliver a budget that could have helped ordinary workers over this crisis instead they saved big business and they have thrown small business to the wolves remember this when that liar johnson starts is rubbish about all being in this together . i was in the city centre today to meet up with some homeless people and the position they find themselves in at the moment is truly appalling they have been left to rot the big issue sellers have been stopped from selling they have no money the poor people who beg to survive have no money and the drug addicts have no money the city centre feels and looks like a war zone with increasingly desperate people around looking for food and drink i heared andy burnham the mayor come out with some nonsense about the cavalry are on the way to help these unfortunates well andy you better get a move on a toxic brew is stewing and some dynamic action needs to be taken not fine words we have numerous empty hotels all over the city put the people who have no homes in them and quick homeless people have a low immunity especially regarding chest and lung infection they would be in great danger of death from covid 19 and being transient in there life styles would be carriers of any infection putting them into a suitable and safe place would not only be the right thing to do it would also be a sensible public health matter |
