In the slipstream of Harvey Weinstein's trial, #MeToo, the deeply shocking news that the most prolific rapist in history was a student in Manchester, and the continuing revelations from the Operation Augusta, comes the release of A Letter To Rapey Pete a short film from MA graduates of the University of Salford exploring the nasty underbelly of student life.
"There is a rape culture connected to student life which is really disturbing" says Manchester Students Union Welfare officer, Deej Malik-Johnson "It's well educated men..."
Meanwhile, a former student recalls "this guy, he was alright and everything but at night he changed, he was a proper predator towards women then. We called him Rapey Pete..."
One night, the guy adds, Rapey Pete physically dragged a girl back to his flat... "she was screaming, he was laughing thinking it was a joke". They asked him later what had happened... "I don't care mate, it's just a girl, I'm onto the next one..."
The accompanying figures are stark around one in four women are sexually assaulted in their adult lives, while only 15% of people experiencing sexual violence report it to the police.
The film quotes Detective Chief Inspector, Deborah Oakes from Greater Manchester Police saying "I think we need to encourage students to report matters and feel able to report matters..."
"We did not want to make a film that instructed women to dress more conservatively, attend self defence classes and carry a rape alarm" say the all male film makers, Rafe Conn, Josh Spencer and Henry Terry "It is a male problem and the film is aimed at them...."
