Salford University is becoming like a weird, perverted episode of Upstairs Downstairs. Throughout the whole University, 13 staff earned over £100,000 during the last financial year (2018-19), with the Vice Chancellor pulling in between £155,000 and £159,999.
This despite the University announcing a £28.9million deficit in its recent accounts, losses of £48million and its net assets halved in value from £98million in 2017-18, to £49million in 2018-19.
Now it seems that the University authorities are set to take out its financial mess on hard working dedicated staff. The Salford Star understands that its Salford Business School, which currently employs 9.2 Professors, is about to 'de-establish' all its posts with only three professorial posts in the future. And that Professors will be made to re-apply for one of the posts.
...All this after the University told the Star back in November* that "We have no plans for compulsory redundancies"...And the University's Vice Chancellor Helen Marshall writing to all staff to "reassure" them over a "feeling of uncertainty", insisting that "the underlying performance of the University remains very strong".
This week, Salford University responded to the Star's request for a comment..."The proposed changes taking place in the Salford Business School are to ensure the school is best placed to deliver its newly focussed research strategy. We are therefore in the very early stages of consultation with the affected individuals."
The Salford Star understands that this is not the end of redundancies at Salford University, with the potential culling of Senior Lecturers next on the Acting Dean's list.
During the last two years, over 150 staff at Salford University have either taken Early Retirement, Voluntary Severance, Redundancy or left via the Mutual Consent Initiative...
