Michael Brown's daughter, Clare Wood, was brutally murdered in Salford in 2009 by a man who had served a custodial sentence for violence against women.
Michael later identified a loophole in the law whereby violent individuals could hide behind the Protection of Data Act, and his vision was to empower individuals through a Police Disclosure Scheme (Clare's Law) to make an informed decision about whether to continue in the relationship or not.
After successful campaigning and police trials it was adopted in England and
Wales in 2014, Scotland in 2016 and Northern Ireland in 2018. Clare's Law is also currently being trialled in Australia and Canada.
"He has appeared on TV, radio and featured in newspapers and magazines warning about the dangers of meeting people through social media whilst promoting Clare's Law" says Michael's sister, Carol Whicher "Putting his own grief aside he has created a legacy that will save countless lives nationally and internationally which is truly inspirational."
Michael has just been recognised in the British Citizen Awards 2020 with the People's Honour, and Carol has also nominated him in the Inspirational Individual category of the Yorkshire Choice Awards as he lives in South Elmsall. She would like everyone in Salford to vote for him...
