SENIOR SALFORD COUNCILLOR PETER CONNOR PASSES AWAY
|
|
Star date: 17th December 2019 KERSAL COUNCILLOR PETER CONNOR PASSES AWAY "I get upset when Salford people get affected..." Veteran Salford councillor, Peter Connor, who represented the Kersal ward, has passed away after an eventful time in some of the top Council roles, carrying out some of the Council's most controversial policies, before becoming Ceremonial Mayor. The flag at Salford City Council Civic centre flew at half mast yesterday as a mark of respect. Full details here...
|
|
Councillor Peter Connor certainly cut a controversial figure during his time as a Labour Party councillor, representing the Kersal ward since 1990. As Lead Member for Community and Social Services in 1999, Lead Member for Housing in 2003 and Assistant Mayor for Adult Services in 2012, he oversaw some major unpopular policies but always believed he was doing the right thing. As Lead Member for Housing, Peter Connor was in charge of much of the regeneration of Salford's old areas, which led to the demolition of hundreds of houses, usually against the wishes of the community. As Assistant Mayor for Adult Services he drove cuts to mental health drop-in services and homelessness facilities in the city, which saw protests aimed at himself. However, Peter Connor would usually stand his ground and argue for what he believed to be the right course of action. A few years ago Peter Connor was made Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, a role which he particularly enjoyed, making links with the community from which he came and was very much a part of. While the Salford Star had many run-ins with Peter Connor over his policies, he was always willing to explain his stance and was an affable personality. As recently as two months ago, he was interviewed by the Salford Star, standing up for market traders at Salford Precinct... "I get upset when Salford people get affected, and these traders are Salford people" he said "I feel that this is contempt for Salford people. I've known the market traders for quite a few decades, from the old markets, and I know the tremendous work that they've done to make not just the markets but that shopping centre a success. "They were involved in saving the Precinct post office and getting the road closed to facilitate the bus routes to try and get people to walk through the shopping centre over to Tesco, plus other issues and campaigns" he added "Everything they've done has been in the interests of the Salford community because they're the ones that matter." Peter Connor was an old style Labour councillor who also believed everything he did was 'in the interests of the Salford community'...because, unlike many of the new councillors, he was actually from that community and these were 'his people'. Peter Connor will be sadly missed within the Salford political landscape.

Time is the great leveller and when the social historians dig into the "Pathfinder" scheme their conclusions will no doubt see that it was an ill thought out programme driven by mendacious propaganda propergated by local councils and their business partners. Almost simultaneously, the district valuers were saying that the area was not desirable while the recently erected holdings of the developers declared this is the place to live. I presume Janus is the God of district valuers and Salford council ?
Mr.Rayofsunshine, don't deviate from the party line least you stumble into the real world. Most councils are closer to T.dan Smith than Nye Bevan! |

If you look round Salford you will see building sites and advertising boards claiming how desirable areas are. Yet a few years back people were being cleared out of the areas for next to nothing after being told that the same areas were worthless. |

Thankfully you are bereft of a brain. How pray tell, are you dedicated to taking on the right? Is it on here, where you wage an unremitting guerrilla war against the forces of the right, with your mind-numbing comments, or is it somewhere else? Are you a modern day version of Tariq Ali and his street fighting years? Personally I see you as more of a Wolfie Smith leading his motley band of the Tooting People's Liberation Front, only in your case, your motley crew of freedom fighters is comprised entirely of you. You're a sad case, Ray. I hope that things get better for you, I really do. Happy New Year my fellow Salfordians. Peace and good will to all. Even Ray. Rossi, Over & Out ... |

| Cody, whilst I agree with you that Labour's poor performance cannot solely be blamed on a hostile media, despite the obvious establishment originated and steered plot against Corbyn ! Many explanations for a Tory Victory have been proffered;was Labour too left wing;were voters fearful of higher taxes or is the case that the modern working class, despite being shafted on a day-to-day basis by the ruling class,is quite right wing in its politics-queen,country and hostile to immigration!
I'd be interested in hearing your take,Cody,on why
the Working Class has lost faith in Labour? In what sense,Cody, has Labour "betrayed the working class"?
One line being peddled by both pundits and bankrupt Blairites is that Labour was insufficiently patriotic on a national level and lacked "the pride" that traditional working class have for the area that they live and work in?
Patriotism/pride can only take you so far- it certainly won't pay the rent! Could it be that to many traditional Labour Voters, the myth of British Superiority is stronger than the pull of class solidarity/Socialism?
Best wishes for the New Year,Cody,Ray the red! |

| Well Ray , thank you very much for your kind proposal that this gagging order should, in principle, be lifted. The thing is it takes two to tango, and Mr Singh would of course have to agree to this dislosure as well, otherwise it would be a non starter. It will be put to him. Should he agree, then I give you my solemn word that I would not use it to "beat up the Council". I believe it would be a simple case of Res ipsa locoteur, The facts will speak for themselves. I agree that I am a grumpy malcontent, that should be obvious to all, but I am not a rightwing one.I am as malcontent with our Tory government as I am with our labour council, and thoroughly pissed of with a lot of things that are wrong with our city and our country. My life is pretty much OK, I have all I need, but there again, my needs are small, but day after day, I see ordinary people around me getting shit on , and robbed all the time, good people being bullied by the government council, utility companies , housing providers, the list is endless, and it makes me angry and sad. We should all work together and try and help one another in whatever way we can, and with that ,Ray old chum,I wish you, your family, the editor ,Rossi, Darren and all the readers a nice Christmas and a happy new year. |

| ”I'm a free floating leftist dedicated to taking on the right!” Yeh, and labelling everyone who disagrees with you as a ‘Tory’, among other things. I believe that’s one of the reasons Labour lost the election, David Badiel said on election night that on Twitter whenever someone criticised Labour or Corbyn 20 other Labour supporters would jump in a say “Fuck off and join the Tories!” While I agree they have a right to say that it’s not conducive to debate, I’ve seen it happen on here and elsewhere too. As for RLB as opposition leader, she’s a Corbynite and he and his political ideas were rejected by a sizeable amount of the electorate. To run on the same platform with a different face will result in the same losses. The people have spoken, listen to them instead of insulting them all by saying they were mislead by Tory lies and media propaganda. While I agree that political lies happen as does media propaganda, it’s always happened and is done by all sides. People are used to it, there’s more to the Labour loss than Tory lies and media bias. |

Long time Salford City Council employee. Staunch trade unionist. Member of the Salford Labour Party. Miss Becky's Joey ... And now Councillor.
But this is as good as it gets for old Ray. He's climbed as high as it's possible for him to go. Face it, dull plodding apparatchiks like Ray, they might be Che Guevara fans, but they lack old Che's razzamatazz. There will be no safe Labour seat for Ray. He'll never become the Member of Parliament for Salford. He has reached his zenith ... and with this being so I, as a fellow socialist and ... and Salfordian ... I ask him to come out of the closet and to have the courage to stop hiding under a sobriquet. Do the decent thing, Ray. Be yourself, and be proud.
That's all for now. Merry Christmas everyone. This is Rossi. Over and out ... |

| Well Ray--- look back through the Salford star archive and see how much properties were undervalued. I believe in the case that last man standing refers to, the owner was only offered 40% of the price eventually recieved after a land tribunal. However the offer was increased by the district valuer as even they could not blag such a low offer price.
If you read through about compulsory purchase, valuations are supposed to be in a "no scheme world".
Read through the Salford Star archives Ray and maybe see if you can find the short film that Nigel Pivaro did for Inside Out.
Are you a Pathfinder denier Ray?

But I know that when taken to a land tribuel the litigants recieved almost double the council's original valuation of their property. Depending how you view the way the council reached their valuation, Illegal or immoral or gross ineptitude is somewhere in the mix.

| Well Ray here you go. Both cannon green, and the kersal flats were both designed by Cruikshank and Seward, a very well respected firm of architects going back till the 1920's and only dissolved in about 2014. The main contractors were Truscon who developed a very good system of in situ concrete for the frame which was very strong. Not like the cheaper pre cast crap that came later. These guys knew what they were doing. Just look at the picture of the buildings being blown up at the top of this page. Thats them. They look like cannon green don't they. Not been to kersal flats for 35 years, had a pal there and it was a bit scruffy then, run down, but they were solid.Very solid and thats the main thing. The trouble was, it suited the then council,to pull them down, moving the people to places like Langworthy, and hoping a future labour government would give them cash for new houses. Other deck access flats in salford, even older ones on eccles new road and Regent road. were refurbed. look at them now. Regards cannon green. must be 6 years since i visited there. I must admit it was not like kersal was. still structurally sound but none were tinned up. Even then there was talk of doing them up. By the way Ray,Kersal flats were not Pathfinder ,they were before that. You have moved the subject a bit. Let us get back to this Pathfinder case. You know, the one where the council were found to have done wrong by the courts, and it cost well over a million to put right. THE QUESTION IS, SHOULD THE GAGGING ORDER, WHICH PREVENTS THE PUBLIC KNOWING ABOUT THE DETAILS OF THIS CASE BE LIFTED ? YES OR NO? I know you cannot answer this question, and I know why. Miss Becky, I know you read the Star, why don't you tell Ray to come clean on this one. You cannot be blamed for all this because you were not even in Salford at this time, let alone our MP. Ray cannot be blamed either, he wasn't a councilor when all this happened. This is a good time to bury bad news for the labour party, just like Tony Blair buried a load the day after 9/11. So come on the pair of you, be honest with the Salford people . YES or NO. |

If our Ray looks carefully at the photo of Kersal flats, he will see dwellings that I presume he thinks are unfit slums being rightfully blown up, despite being built by our clever elected idiots only 30 years before. If he looks even closer he will notice that these flats are identical in design and construction as Canon Green Court. They were built by the same people and architects. This block is currently having millions of pounds spent on it to give it a new lease of life, over 30 years after its sister blocks were blown up. Was canon green a slum before the recent renovation? No, it just needed an upgrade. So why did the council pull these blocks down?.Can Ray explain why Kersal was slums and canon green isn't. The people living in both blocks was the same. Ordinary working class Salford people. It was the same with pathfinder. Give Salford council a few bob and a bulldozer and they will demolish the world. What about the little terraced slums in Worsley. They are called quaint little cottages now costing hundreds of thousands, yet not as well built as the houses knocked down by salford council. Legaleagle raises a point about that case that had a non disclosure agreement on it. I thought these things were there to protect people like Harvey Weinstein and that other fella prince Andrew has been knocking about with. Would Ray welcome this gagging order to be lifted? I don't know much about other areas, but there was one area, in Higher Broughton where this matter was settled in the High court. The case concerned was R v Salford City Council ex parte Singh, 2011. The case was settled in 2012. Here, the court held, inter alia, that the housing that Salford Council wanted to demolish was adequate, and that the council had to refurbish a large number of these properties, compensate all the residents and pay their legal bills. The council also craftily agreed a non disclosure agreement which means Salford residents cannot find out what went on here. What does Mr Rayofsunshine have to say about this. Nothing I suspect |

Look at all the great rejoicing on the streets when that evil old cow Thatcher kicked the bucket. Thatcher, although wicked ,did less harm to the Salford people than our labour council have. The main lot leading the celebrations then were the left wing of your labour party. I must admit that I was glad she was gone for good as well, I just could not be arsed making a song and dance of it. If being dead lets politicians off for the the evil things they have done through their lives, that rule must apply to all of them in fairness. Adolf Hitler, Stalin,Kagganovitch, Pol Pot, Sadam Hussain , Col Gadaffi , Mrs T and countless others. In answer to the fitness of houses pulled down, I think few could be classed as inadequate or slums. Even if they were, what gives councils the right to pull peoples homes down homes that they own, then make them pay rent? The council and Salix homes house plenty of people in inadequate and slum housing. Does that give me the right to knock them down? |

| So sad to hear of Cllr's Connor's passing - he was a lovely man with a wicked sense of humour! He had the capability to laugh both at himself and "politics" in general.
Condolences to Cllr's Connor's family and friends. |
