FREE LIGHT FESTIVAL AT SALFORD QUAYS

Lightwaves, a free illuminated digital art display featuring ten installations including  Musical Seesaws and LED umbrellas, opened on Friday and runs at Salford Quays until Sunday 15th December from 4pm to 10pm daily.

Until Sunday 15th December, the annual free Lightwaves Festival is taking place at Salford Quays featuring ten interactive illuminated displays by artists.

Keith Brown's GeoThicket is a virtual reality experience that will be located in The Lowry, in which guests are invited to select their own path through a colourful, multidimensional, geometric wonderland, as the adventure alters with every step.

Light Orchestra is an interactive sound and light installation, which invites visitors to become conductors, moving their arms to direct a symphony of light and music, while Wave-field features interactive Musical Seesaws, and The Umbrella Project from Cirque Bijou features twenty Salford residents operating hand-built LED umbrellas to create a kaleidoscopic moving light performance.

DigiTree by Backstage Academy students is a large LED tree with its branches changing colour to show the changing seasons of the year, while the LED floor reacts to the weight of a person as they move around to create more illumination. And Groups of People by Visioning Lab takes Lowry as inspiration to create a virtual artwork on an app.

A collaboration with Blackpool Illuminations brings Spiro, an immersive walkway through a 25metre light tunnel, and Quays Culture has commissioned Cathedral of Mirrors by Mads Christensen, an installation of mirrored columns fitted with technicoloured lights. The work will be exhibited in the University of Salford campus foyer at MediaCityUK.

The Festival will also see three new SHINE commissions: The Happiness Sum by Gemma Wood, which invites guests to check if they are maximising their happiness potential, Portal of Reflection by Tom Lambert, a 'hexagonal installation of mesmerising radiating light and sound, viewed through special glasses, designed to alter your perception and take guests on a journey of self-reflection'; and Pharos by Joe Moran, a light sculpture 'designed to absorb light from nearby sources and redistribute the light as colourful pulsating patterns'.
