EIGHT DAYS OF SALFORD CITY COLLEGE STRIKE ACTION AS MANAGEMENT DUCKS ISSUES

Star date: 5th December 2019 MORE STRIKE ACTION PROMISED AS COLLEGE REFUSES TO BUDGE ON PAY This morning there was a noisy protest by staff outside Future Skills at MediaCityUK, as Salford City College members of the National Education Union embarked on their eighth day of strike action out of ten. The union is promising more action if the College management keeps refusing to negotiate over its refusal to implement a nationally agreed pay and conditions deal. Full details here...

This morning, the National Education Union (NEU) members' protest moved to Future Skills at Media City as the eight day of strike action hit Salford City College sites. The strike - with two more days to follow next week, on 10th and 11th December - is over management's refusal to implement a nationally agreed pay and conditions deal... or even to negotiate a compromise with the union. "I think that the College management is seriously in error in not attempting in any shape or form to engage with the trade union in discussions about how we resolve this dispute" said Judith Elderkin, of NEU Salford "They have made no overtures, they haven't examined their own budget that carefully, and we have lots and lots of our members who are disenchanted and seriously disaffected with their employers. "We've got two more days of strike action next week and then we will review our position on what other actions we can take, together with strike action and action short of strike action, to see if the College can bring itself to see how it can retain and recruit high quality teachers" she added "If you can't pay them properly your recruitment and retention issues are going to escalate..."

| I fully agree with our Ray there. He is bang on with his view about the idle elites who just milk our good organisations for each penny they can get. The council is full of them as well, and their names are often mentioned in this journal. But these elites from both the Uni and tech have plenty of pull with the Labour elites who are our Rays bosses. I hope a ton of bricks don't land on Rays head for his comments, (at least not until after christmas). |

| Rayofsunshine says that the bosses at Salford Tech should open the books as it were for public scrutiny. A good idea. Does he think that Salford council should do the same, especially when it comes to telling us how many millions Salford Council are paying out to billionaire property developers who are sueing them over their breaches of contract on land deals? Like for instance the Crescent police station case? |

| Bob the regular,as in other organisations, the grafters,the producers of real value,the workers at Salford College,have had to carry an imposed infestation of "managers" and barely enumerate "accountants"! Once this self- perpetuating elite got its feet under the table,it naturally grabbed the lions share of available resources for its own venal satisfaction!
The validity of the staff's claim for better pay can be easily validated by Salford College "opening the books" so that everyone can see what state the college's finances are in! |

| Sadly, I fear that there will be no winners in this dispute, but we will all suffer as a result of the actions of a few selfish individuals. An attack on the rights of workers shouldn't be allowed to stand but at least there has been no impact on the college. Unless that student is not telling the truth. |

You response indicates that you clearly do not understand that teacher recruitment and retention rates can impact on the quality of education that is on offer to our young people. Colleges have to compete for staff in the market place, and when a college in an area decides not to honour a national pay agreement and pleads poverty, then potential applicants will not want to come to Salford. The pay offer that is being withheld should have been paid in 2018/19 and the College has brought nothing to the negotiating table. As the College withholds a meagre pay rise for last year,staff, quite rightly will be anxious about their position this pay round. If you want to retain quality teachers you have to value them and treat them properly as an employer. | We need a salford teacher on here to write about the TRUTH about what is going on in our primary, high schools and college's. There are STRESSED and LOW PAID, there do work very LONG HOURS and most of em do take home school books to mark up for 2hours in the evening. Also, roughly 30% of em do QUIT being a teacher in the first 5years. . Maybe the job centre can help these people on JSA(giro) these bums, drongos and layabouts, go on teacher courses for about 3years and then become a full time teacher. See what WORK is. Merry Xmas. |

| Whats our Ray got to say about all this? The labour line is normally in favour of the educationalist types as most of them are all keen labour supporters, the nice, clean ,politically correct type of ones. I made my point, I think they should get their pay and conditions as agreed, alongside the Fire Brigade. |

| These people who run the college and uni can always find a few bob to do a little property deal that suits them. They are both well in league with the council. I wonder what has happened about that police station site the council are getting sued about. When the council ratted on the guys who were buying it, it was so they could do a deal with our accademic betters. |

| If you talk with teachers, Darren, see if you can do a deal with them, you know, get some private English tuition to GCSE standard for about fifteen quid an hour. It's a lot cheaper than buying a PIECE OF ART, and would make your scribblings much easier to digest, you sad drongo. |

| Rossi, as usual, is spouting total rubbish.
They, in theory, are contracted to have 13 weeks holiday a year, but one of those is taken for the ‘training days. So Rossi’s ‘sixth moths a year’ is shown up for the idiotic comment that it is.
Their contracted yearly hours are also a farce as they are obliged to perform preparation, marking, administration etc duties even if these exceed the contracted hours. Darrens breakdown of work is quite accurate, if a little on the low side for many teachers.
Perhaps Rossi should confine himself to commenting on subjects he knows something about; which is little.

| I know quite a lot of school teachers and I talk to a few of them. Teacher's work LONG hours, there get to school at 7.30am and work till 5/6pm. There also take there work home with them and mark up books for a hour in the evening. In the 6weeks summer holidays there only off 5weeks holiday, there in work a week preparing before the term starts. About 30% of teachers QUIT within 5years. The workload is too much. Teachers need more £££ |

| What a dreadful article. Here are some facts. Teachers at SCC are the best paid GFE teachers in the country, with the most holiday. The college have repeatedly explained to the staff and the unions that the demands are not affordable and would bankrupt the college. Previous articles refer to "unrestricted reserves", but do not ackowledge that this amount includes assets and buildings, not just cash in the bank. More lies in this article include the claim that college management have refused to discuss with the unions - in fact, the unions refused to discuss with the college unless a financial offer was guaranteed for the next 2 years. Which is impossible.
One comfort is that there is no disruption to the college. Very few staff are actually on strike - the picket demonstrations are made up of union reps including teachers from other schools and colleges mostly. The main impact has been upsetting local residents with excessive noise, leading to police complaints against the unions.
What a ridiculous waste of everyone's time, and terrible gutter journalism. |

| These are the people that are teaching our kids. There should Give ALL a BIG PAYRISE. My son is going to college next year and I want ALL the teaching staff to do the best for my son. When people get a PAYRISE, there will work better in there job. |
