Star date: 1st November 2019 FIRST SALFORD GENERAL ELECTION CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED As the Queen stamps approval for a General Election on 12th December, some parties have already announced their candidates for Salford's two and a half seats – Blackley and Broughton, Salford and Eccles, and Worsley and Eccles South. The standing Labour Party MPs have huge majorities but other parties are lining up to try and unseat them. Full details here...

Yep, December 12th will see yet another General Election but is the Labour Party stranglehold on Salford about to be loosened? Probably not but some parties have already declared candidates to have a go, with more to follow. Here's the list so far... Salford and Eccles Standing MP, Rebecca Long-Bailey, hasn't spoken to the Salford Star in eons, despite declaring the week before she first got elected in 2015: "Yeah I think it's sad that people aren't taking to you because, irrespective of the kind of coverage these people are going to get, at the end of the day it's important for local politicians to be held to account whether it's good publicity or bad publicity..." (see here) Mmmm, so there's been no communication from Ms Long-Bailey as she builds her national career, but she did write to a local constituent this week, breathlessly stating that, "from 12.01am on Wednesday 6 November 2019, Parliament will be dissolved and from that moment in time I shall no longer be your Member of Parliament and instead I shall be the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Salford and Eccles Constituency in the impending General Election as the Labour Party candidate..." Up against the Labour MP, who has a whopping majority of almost 20,000, are... Green Party – Bryan Blears A nephew of former Labour MP Hazel Blears, Bryan tells the Salford Star that over the past year he's been "meeting with communities across Salford who aren't happy with the direction our city is travelling in. We are suffering from a lack of affordable housing, worsening poverty in our town centres, an increase in knife crime, and traffic and pollution problems across the city..." If elected, he adds that "I will ensure that the residents waiting for dangerous cladding to be replaced on Salford's tower blocks have to wait no longer", will speak up for more NHS and Council funding, and "act to reverse the effects of man-made climate change and reshape our economy to put people before corporate greed..." Liberal Democrats - Jake Overend A former student at the University of Salford, Jake says: "Salford has been my home since I started university here, so I am thrilled to be able to offer people here a real, Liberal alternative, as well as giving people the option of voting for a party that unequivocally wants to stop Brexit. "We have already seen first hand the damage a no-deal Brexit can and will do to communities like Salford, and by running in this election we are giving people the opportunity to firmly oppose this disastrous outcome." Brexit Party – Matt Mickler Matt, who works in the recruitment industry and lives in Prestwich, says: "I believe that for the sake of our democracy, the outcome of the Brexit vote must be respected. We need a clean-break Brexit. "...I would fight for a cleaner and safer Salford and Eccles and I want to see more investment and growth. We need more jobs and I would encourage start-up companies and empower small and local businesses in the constituency. There is a desperate need for more affordable and social housing in the area and that is something I would campaign for." Conservative Party - No announcements as yet from the Salford Tories – but they are not great at speaking to the Salford Star either... Worsley and Eccles South
Labour Party – Barbara Keeley Another politician who doesn't speak to the Salford Star but she has posted a meme asking voters to 're-elect' her...Keeley has a majority of almost 10,000 and up against her are... Liberal Democrats - Joe Johnson-Tod Joe, a 19 year old student from Salford University is taking on the veteran MP, and describes this as "one of the most important elections in recent history... "Politics in the UK is broken at the moment - we have Boris Johnson's bumbling, hard-right Conservatives on one side and Jeremy Corbyn's incompetent, scandal-hit Labour on the other. Jo Swinson's Lib Dems are a progressive alternative and I am proud to say that I will provide a strong voice for local residents." Green Party – Daniel Towers No official statement yet but we have had confirmation he is standing. Conservative Party - ? No announcements as yet from the Salford Tories Following Nigel Farage's press conference this morning, also expect a Brexit Party candidate Blackley and Broughton
Labour Party – Graham Stringer With no social media communication and very little venturing into Salford, the standing Labour MP has a huge majority of almost 20,000. It seems his biggest problem is his own Broughton party members, as only last week a left leaning faction held a non-binding 'trigger vote' as the first stage in removing him as the candidate. Once the election was called, it was too late, the Star understands, to take it further. Expect Mr Stringer to stand... Green Party – David Jones No statement as yet from David Jones, except confirmation of him standing. Liberal Democrats - Iain Donaldson - no statement as yet, except confirmation of him standing. Conservative Party/Brexit Party No announcements yet on prospective candidates. The Salford Star is non-political and does not endorse any candidate or party.
More details of prospective candidates will be posted as and when information is received.

Listen Ray, desist okay. I'm tired of spanking you on here. It's getting embarrassing. It's like that 1970s fight between Muhammad Ali and that guy from Leeds, Richard Dunne. It's a one sided slap down Ray, and it's just making you look like the Mother of All Puppets. |

God help the poor and vulnerable if we get another Tory government for 5 years. The bodies will keep piling up. |

| An ex-long term labour voter will NOT be voting for Miss Becky another waster on the Corbyn Chain Gang. I try to exist on a pittance for a pension. I live in a freezing cold housing association property. If I eat I can't heat or vice versa. Not one of this mob has addressed the fact of people trying to live in such poverty? Until they do I won't be voting for them. I am terrified of trying to survive another winter. I am so cold it hurts. I admit I think often that dying is a good option. I go to supermarkets at night because they're warm. I go to libraries in the day for the same reason. They also have computers! MP's & Councillors need to see beyond their own comfort zones. |

| Very well said Elizabeth. Eccles is a 'Shit-hole' with live rats running in the streets in broad daylight. Over-run with Take-Aways' and dereliction. Years of no investment has left it rotting in squalor. Car wrecking roads with pot-holes down to the cobbles from years gone by. The once proud and thriving town has been abandoned totally by the Salford City Council. Where the hell are Eccles Councillors? standing up and screaming to defend the place. I've no idea who they are and never see anything off any of them and THEY want MY VOTE! This 'One Horse Town' full of Take-Aways and boarded up pubs and shops, dominated by one supermarket with 'Dick Turpin' parking scammers in management out there to rob the poor car drivers/shoppers to make themselves rich. Has anyone noticed the horse of this 'One Horse Town has died? |

| Listen Bob, just be quiet okay. No one wants to hear this La Dolce Vita story of yours. It smacks of triumphalism. And aren't you, by the way, a Brexiteer? If so, isn't this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? The kind of rank hypocrisy normally only seen being performed by politicians ... and now brickles from The Height. I reiterate, Be Quiet, Bob. Nobody likes people harping on about what they're going to do, be it in Southern Italy, Greece or the sun kissed Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro. It comes over as gloating. We Brits, Salfordians in particular, and especially those living on minimum wage doing dead end jobs, or even worse, eeking out a miserable existence on JSA, with only the sound of vintage Bruce Springsteen to soothe our blues; probably his album 'Darkness on The Edge of Town' at that, and most likely the track 'Factory' played over and over on repeat play, Do NOT Like Gloating.
Rid yourself of that smugness, Bob. It's insidious, like a boring old relative who outstays his welcome at Christmas, and spends most of his time telling crap old jokes and dispensing tedious pearls of wisdom, all the while banging on about how in the New Year he'll be moving to the Philippines and settling down with this new girlfriend he found on the internet, a twenty two year old dental nurse called Gloria.
Just rid yourself of the smugness, Bob ... |

There are plenty of dirt cheap old houses for sale in sunny Italy, but nobody wants to buy them. The youngsters over there don't want these houses as they would rather live in big cities where jobs are. I am going to live in a warm climate because it is good for my old aching bones after a life of working in the cold, and because it is cheaper to do so than living here. |

| I'd like all the prospective Parliamentary Candidates to reassure Salford women that they will continue to promote women's legal, sex-based rights as in EA2010. We make up 51% of the UK population, a majority, and it's about time we weren't paid 14% less than men, killed at the rate of 2 per week at the hands of known males, 1 in 3 of us subjected to serious sexual assault. Women and girls need their female-only spaces like changing rooms, toilets and refuges, to protect us physically and also save us from the trauma of sharing with a male-bodied individual when we've survived abuse & rape. Women's sport needs to be free of male participants. Women's Officers and Women-Only shortlists should be for females only. They were created because of our SEX-based oppression, not because of what we feel. Girls are already missing schools where they are forced to share toilets with boys, especially when on their periods. Please reassure me that girls' education is every bit as important as boys and you will ensure that school is a safe place for them. Can you reassure me that women's refuges in Salford will be for females only? Can you reassure me that girls will be encouraged to excel at sport, filled with hope that no males can appear to win their trophies? Can you reassure me that Salford public buildings will always retain toilets and changing rooms that are segregated by sex as a minimum, with additional provision for trans individuals who feel threatened using the spaces that fit their sex. Can you reassure me that women in Salford whose cultural and religious practice means they cannot undress or adjust head wear under the male gaze will have THEIR rights to privacy, dignity and religious freedoms upheld? If you can, you have my vote |

| Well Ray its not what I'll think, it's what I'll do in the event its all going tits up which I am sure it is going to ,when Steptoe looses a few votes and Boris does as well and they both get the sack and when Miss Becky walks into number 10 supported by those two angry scotish women. Even if Boris wins, and takes us out of europe, this country will still be going down in the world.AS you all know, I am a staunch no deal, give em sweet FA brexiteer, but I admit now, the remoaners have won, we are staying in, it is what the establishment and the bankers and finnanciers want. What do you think that Gina Miller woman does for a day job? She is not a dangly earing and dungarres wearing guardian reading social worker is she? Her and her husband are international hedge fund financiers, that are big supporters of your Labour party. Anyway what will I do, well I'll tell you. I am coming up to my pension, I am going to build a "gym" behind my mates house, that I will put all my junk in and me and the girlfriend in when were here. I will rent my pad out to students or nurses. Girlfriends house can be given to her daughter. Then were off to the south of italy where a mate of mine has found us a dirt cheap run down old cottage I am going to do up. They do not have this daft idea about housing ladders over there. Housing ladders are what painters and window cleaners use.Houses are just places where you live.Repairing old houses is seen as a cost and liability, not a good investment. We will come back here in the summer when it gets to hot and at Christmas. What will you be doing Ray, when Miss Becky gets in number 10 as I predict.? |

Shouldn’t you rescind that comment, given that you have asked several others on here to apologise for similar comments in the past? As for the election I predict RLB winning with a slightly reduced majority, with the LibDems picking up Labour voters who are frustrated with Labour’s Brexit position. |

Is it that they, the right ,don't have any policies except for kissing the backside of bankers or could it be that most of their supporters are morons,i.e,the Brexit Party!
Although at an early stage of the campaign,Labour has started to climb in the polls and is beginning to set the news agenda. I predict outright victory for Labour - victory to Socialism! |

| Yes ,I can see it now. It is for certain that both the Lib Dems and SNP are going to be the winners in this election. Corbyn will loose a good few seats and get fired. Despite our learned friend Rossi's misgivings, Labour have to elect a woman to the top job. In a political climate where even a backward bunch like the DUP have a woman leader, it seems strange to me that Labour have never had one. Miss Becky has got to be favorite for the job. Miss Becky as leader would then have to reach a deal with both Lib Dems and SNP. Juicey Jo would have to "reluctantly have forced on her", a second referendum of the peoples vote, which she would win, and the SNP price would be an independence referendum. Miss Becky would then be up in Scotland all the time, pleading with the Scots to stay, telling them how sorry she was that the two Scottish labour prime ministers we have had were a pair of wankers who never did anything for Scotland and that "lessons had been learned". I think that Miss becky would win that one,and so she would go down as a great stateswoman, who saved the union, and kept us in the EU.This is what the establishment want. The only losers would be working class brexiteers like me. Ah well,it will all be over by Christmas, or will it? |

| The alarm bells went off t’other day at my home for the last 40 years, the Salford Maximum Security Twilight Home for Bewildered Geriatrics (rated as “Outstanding” by the CQC); Matron Myra was running round barricading the doors and screaming demonically, “Watch out, the candidates will be popping round soon for photo opportunities! Better double up on the Mogodons in the inmates’ nightly cocoa! Better make sure that Bekki Long Bailey takes off her diamante and tiger-print stillies if she comes round!
I was music to my 96 year old ears. The Election’s on!! Time to come out of retirement! I spent the rest of the day prepping my trusty turbo-powered mobility scooter, checking the electrolyte levels in my batteries, checking the air pressures in my tyres and tightening my nuts. The chrome’s polished and shining and the stickers are on!
So I wonder who’ll be standing. That erudite, informative, unbiased publication, the “Claremont Clarion” (Pendleton, Irlams, Swinton & Salford edition) would undoubtedly be a good source. (Incidentally, this week’s edition has a free gift – a “Where’s Bekki” based on that popular game “Where’s Wally” - a wicked coincidence?). Scanning its political pages, surprise surprise our invisible/missing MP Bekki Long Bailey will be standing (or should that read “tottering” in her six inch stillies (sooo Essex!); so too is Hazel Blear’s nephew, Bryan for the Greens. I wonder if Aunty Hazel will be delivering leaflets in her tight motorbike leathers like a modern day, Suzi Quatro, in order to get him a few more votes? I see the Liberal Democrats (such misnomer considering they propose to ignore the Referendum Result!) have a candidate under the tutelage of their new leader Jo Swansong. As an ex student, I hope he remembers to get up in time to vote on Election Day!
The Brexit Party (aka The Nigel Forage Fan Club & Reminiscence Party) have given us an (almost) local candidate in Matt Mickler and plenty of newspapers over the last few weeks. At least we know where he stands on some issues! Barry the Budgie is very grateful for them – they line the bottom of his cage and are the “Andrex” equivalent for the avian world and smoother than sandpaper!
No news from the Tories on their candidate but I expect it’ll be some no-hoper WASP with a name like The Honorable Peregrine Featherstonehaugh-Cholmondely (pronounced “Fanshore Chumlee).
To all candidates: Beware the Geriatric in a mobility scooter! I shall be around, watching and listening, recording everything you say and do in my trusty little black book and hold you to account!
And it’s already filling up.
You see, I got my copy of the “Claremont Clarion” (Pendleton, Irlams, Swinton & Salford edition) from my local reasonably priced supermarket and whilst browsing the Senior Citizen incontinence devices in the middle aisle of my local Lidi supermarket, I overheard a conversation coming from the fruit and veg aisle. The voices were instantly recognisable as belonging to our esteemed Mayor, Cllr Dennett, and his sidekick – The Lord of the Towers - Cllr Merry, the well-known fashionista, role model and doyen for Labour’s soap dodgers aka the Young Momentumers! (Oh, grammar note: I was not referring to Messrs Dennett and Merry as being “fruit and veg”!).
“Oh Praise Ye, Praise Ye, Praise ye!” boomed the voice of “Moses” Merry.
“Pull yourself together Mr Merry, tuck your shirt in and stop squeezing my plums!!” hissed the Mayor, “Why are you in such a state of ecstasy? Overdosed on your tablets?”
“Haven’t you heard? Happy days are here again! The Sun will shine on our socialist Paradise Utopia once more! That dark cloud has removed itself from our sight! Praise the Blessed Jeremy!”
The Mayor rolled his eyes heavenwards in exasperation, “Yes, all Praise to the Blessed Jeremy! What are you on about? Have you had one too many sweet sherries from the Council Executive’s Drinks Cabinet?”
“We’re having a General Election! And the Blessed Bekki of Long Bailey will be in the Cabinet, out of our hair!”
“At last we can make more unfulfillable promises, promise the sky, be everything to all people and pull the wool even more firmly past the eyes of the electors. And sod the truth and accountability. We shall no longer have to justify and double check anything! We could almost get away with murder! We’ll have a free rein!”
The Mayor stopped in his tracks. “But we need good opposition to make us give good governance. Yes, she was difficult for us but people believed in her and she made us perform better. They trusted her honesty and transparency.
“They don’t any more, according to our canvassing!”, groaned Mr Merry after consulting his iPad.
Well, you could have knocked me off my buggy with a feather! Is Labour worried? Did I imagine the whole conversation or who it sounded like – perhaps Matron at the Salford Maximum Security Twilight Home for Bewildered Geriatrics has been tampering with my evening cocoa again! Or perhaps I’m coming down with a dose of Election Fever! But it’s all in my little black book!

| I think some correspondents are confusing as
Ford's labour council with Corbyn's labour party. Brexit is a very useful smokescreen for the Tories. It hid the real problems the country (world) was facing after the banking meltdown of the late 2000s. It still suits Their purpose. Cameron's," we are all in it together' never really cut mustard. He's never had to use a foodbank or waited in the ,p*ssing rain for a bus that stopped running at six o'clock.
And Johnson, another Eton rifle, he will give you nothing back, you poor deluded Brexit supporters. What exactly did the EU take away ? What is it you are supposed to get from leaving. A theoretical concept of self determination. If it suits the likes of Johnson, Farage and Rees- Mogg how can it be any good for a peasant from Salford ? |

| Well this is going to prove interesting isn't it? A vote for the Tories, Lib Dems and Brexit parties will be a vote to get rid of the NHS because all three want an American style system that will see people unable to afford to even see their GP. Despite what some people think the Brexit party has nothing to offer the people of the UK whatsoever, a vote for them is a vote for racism, it's a vote for the erosion of your rights Nigel Farage would destroy your human rights, employment rights and the NHS,
I like my MP,Barbara does indeed reply when I write to her and she was very visible at the anti fracking protests in my area. I like both my labour councillor in Cadishead and our independent in Irlam both are very visible and hard working, we have no Green candidate yet, I will be voting Labour pure and simple, I like Jeremy Corbyn , I like Barbara Keeley and I like Lewis Nelson, I like the Labour plans for our future and with plans afoot to get rid of the NHS to an American style system we cannot afford to let the Tories in again. The NHS has saved my life 4 times in the last 4 years I would not be alive without it, It does not belong to the Tories and is not theirs to sell off, we pay for it every week in our national insurance, I would not be alive today if I had to pay for private healthcare. Labour will also get rid of Universal credit, sanctions will be a thing of the past, these evil and cruel treatments of the sick and disabled at the hands of ATOS etc will be ended, all this makes me feel very positive indeed |

| Miss Becky has no chance of getting to the top. She's an apparatchik, not a leader. Miss Becky is a drab and colourless presence on the political stage, in truth she has risen far higher than her meagre talents would have led one to expect. She is ideally suited to being a local councillor, nothing more.
Trust me Starovians, Miss Becky and Steptoe have got as high as they can get. |

| Rebecca Long-Bailey should not be allowed anywhere near the ballot box for the way she has repeatedly ignored the will of her constituents following the Brexit vote, time and time again she has voted to reject any form of deal or compromise as she blatantly has both feet in the remain camp. If she had any balls she would jump the LiB Dems as they at least admit that they think the majority are wrong where RLB is to much of coward to do so. |

| We have all had enough of Brexit, and political rubbish to last a lifetime, so an election now with all the crap they all come out with is to much to put up with. Each cloud has a silver lining as they say and this one might have 2.Steptoe is going because he is going to loose for sure, but that does not mean Boris will win.I reckon the Tories might loose 20 or 30 seats as well. What then? A triple alliance with Miss Becky in number 10 as the leader of the biggest party. Or if these 3 do not have enough votes, we could ad the 3 dragons from the welsh nats, the greens, and the old battleaxe from Northern Ireland.Six of the worst for Boris, all eacer to chop his balls off. It could even get worse, what if that old bat Widdicombe stands? I can hardly wait. |
