This Thursday, 24th October, at 4pm, there's a Flood Awareness Meeting at The Broughton Trust on Heath Avenue in Lower Broughton to which all the community is urged to attend... "It's a update on the river levels regarding the wetlands and how they are operated and when, plus the difference between the tidal flow and rivers levels, alerts and warnings" says Keri Muldoon of the Broughton Flood Group "We here in Lower Broughton have had three flood alerts in the past three months... "Broughton Flood Group is inundated, and instead of people asking the same questions it would be a great idea for them to come along and find out the answers from the Environment Agency which will be attending, along with Councillor Jim King from Salford City Council. I am hoping people will help themselves and be educated on what's happening and how high the river is. Hopefully we fill the Broughton Trust, and hope to see yous all there..." | I must admit that the shit I was going on about in the river was just natural sort of shit in the main.Just a build up of silt and sand. While I am on though,a pal just mentioned that its our old pal Cllr Blunderbus thats in charge of the river authority. He apparently gets god knows how much a year to chair the rivers board.Cllr Blunderbus is a professor of geography so he should know about rivers and what they do when they reach flatter ground and start meandering around. Just like when the Irwell reaches Salford proper. What happens, is that the river slows down and it deposits the soil and sand particles that it picked up further upstream. Over time this builds up and causes a blockage or slowing down of water flow, and it is this that causes flooding. What is required is careful monitoring of the river, and the right amount, and at the right place , this build up of silt needs to be taken out.Not too much ,or not too little. It is a special science, but it is well known.If too much is taken out, that can cause problems as well.It looks to me that the experts have not paid as much attention to this as they should have done. Then there is always the cost element, and the "how much cash we have in the budget routine". The welfare and safety of the people should come first, but we all know that Blunderbus and his mates do not give a shit about the people of Salford.They just meander about sitting on as many of these bullshit committees as they can , and getting well paid for it. |

| Yes, I would swim in the Irwell. It is a clean river, and this is one thing that Salford Council and United Utilities, along side the Environment Agency can be applauded for. | The river Irwell is pretty clean. It is home to Cormorants and Herons. These birds live on fish. If the Irwell was as filthy as you people say, then it wouldn't be able to support such birds as there would be no fish. Get it Right You Numpties! |

| @Bobtheregular - I was shocked to see there was fish in it a few years back - were only tiddlers though! They were however swimming and sheltering in a car tire! There’s a lot of rubbish in there that could do with coming out, surely that’d help with flood prevention. |

| Bob is right. The river irwell needs getting rid of the CRAP and SHIT in it. There is allsorts in there, motorbikes, shopping trolleys, tyres and you might find a suitcase full of *Salford council broken promises*. The council should spend a week on it. Maybe Paul dennett can be in charge and get his hands dirty as ALWAYS. |

| I remember looking at the river from Broughton bridge the other christmas just hours before it flooded over 20 minutes or so I was there you could see the level rising. A couple of days later,I looked up the river from the same spot on the bridge. You could see all the silt and shit that had piled up over the years. This must have some sort of slowing down of the flow of the river. Would dredging some of the shit out of the river perhaps help it flow better and lessen the risk of flooding? |

| People should not be worried, There is a new £10 million flood basin that holds 650 million litres of water down kersal/broughton. Also there is NEW *10grand* SIGN outside mocha parade, that displays warnings about floods. Maybe people will stand outside the NEW sign all day looking at it. Maybe if it gets really bad, Paul dennett make help you put sandbags outside your house. |
