BETTER BUSES CAMPAIGN HOLDS PARTY AS GREATER MANCHESTER BEGINS CONSULTATION ON PUBLIC CONTROL

Star date: 16th October 2019 GREATER MANCHESTER COMBINED AUTHORITY OPENS BUS CONSULTATION To celebrate Greater Manchester Combined Authority opening its three month consultation on a franchising scheme that would mean the region's buses would be under public control, Better Buses for Greater Manchester held a party outside GM Mayor Andy Burnham's office this week. This week the Better Buses for Greater Manchester campaign held a party outside GM Mayor Andy Burnham's office to celebrate the opening of a consultation on the proposal for a franchising scheme for the whole of Greater Manchester... "This would mean that bus services would be under Greater Manchester's control and they would decide which services would be provided - like the way buses are run in London and some other major cities around the world" states Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) "We would set the routes, timetables, tickets and standards, while the bus operators would run the services. "This would allow buses to work better with the rest of our public transport – as part of Our Network– Greater Manchester's vision for a joined-up transport system" it adds. The Better Buses for Greater Manchester party included Salford campaigners, plus cakes, songs and balloons with the number three on them, representing the three months of public views. "We're happy that public control is going to the final stage before a Mayoral decision" says Pascale from the campaign "If we can win in Greater Manchester, it will set a precedent for the rest of the UK to follow...This consultation is our biggest chance to tell the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham loud and clear: we want and need better, publicly controlled buses. "Buses are hugely important to our lives, to our loved ones and the jobs and services we can access, and right now, they're not good enough" she explains "We want better, publicly controlled buses. "If we can mobilise thousands of people to fill in the consultation in support, we'll be impossible to ignore" she adds "But the bus companies hate the idea of public control. Private bus companies have shown that profit is more important to them than passengers: from threatening legal action, to spinning misinformation about higher costs for tax payers, when regulation will save us money. We need to make sure our voices are louder than those of bus companies with vested interests..."
The consultation runs for three months, until 8th January 2020, and there is a public event on Salford Precinct on 24th October 9am-5:30pm.

| In pendlebury/swinton, you can get a *DIRECT* 8bus to Farnworth/bolton and towards town.. The 2bus also goes from Bolton via swinton/Eccles towards Traff cen, and then if you get off at Eccles you SWITCH and can go to irlam/cadishead.. The V1/V2 express service goes from Manchester via swin/pendlebury to Leigh/Atherton.. Also number 36/37/38 goes from MCR via swi/pendlebury to walkden/L.Hulton. its all so easy..USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT. |

| Arnold Rimmer has a point.
Living in Pendlebury in the ‘good old days’ we could get direct bus services to; Radcliffe and Prestwich, Manchester and Reddish, Eccles, Patricroft, Cadishead, Walkden, Westhoughton, Leigh,
Farnworth and Bolton.

| Arnold Rimmer says u can't get from Prestwich to swinton, YES YOU CAN. The 484 bus service runs from Prestwich via agecroft, swinton to Eccles. This service has been running for years. |

| Stagecoach, firstbus and diamond buses are going to FIGHT this with there top lawyers. There don't want ANDY BURNHAM to take control of there buses. These bus companys only care about £££, not passengers. |

| Capital idea from Darren there - Only one problem with it. The Scottish Mafia might have loosened its grip on the county by handing these routes to the new provider, but they are still there. If they can make a profit in the region - they'll stick with a route. |

| If you look at the map of proposed bus routes they released a few months back, you still can't really get anywhere in Greater Manchester without going to Manchester city centre first which makes the entire system pointless.
See if anyone else can work out how you get from Swinton to Prestwich. It can't be done easily without going to Manchester first even though they are right next to each other geographically. |

| People can still see all the OLD buses at the cheetham hill bus museum on top of Boyle st. There is about 70 on show there. There is our old green Salford buses along with selnec/GM buses etc. There is also transport musuems at bury, st helens and Leyland. Also, there is bus/transport rallys on about 6times a year ware you can go ride on these old buses. |

| Not a bad idea from Darren there, I agree that the bus service from that era was much better than it is today, the buses were better ,routes better organised, and the fares seemed more affordable than they are today. However, it is obvious that Darren is much younger than I am. If he was as old as me, he would remember the old green Salford City buses.It might seem strange,but Salford council used to run a magnificent bus service,Latest new buses, cheap fares ect,then they were all amalgamated to form selnec that Darren talks about. All the buses were painted in selnec colours, including the shitty old red ones Manchester council used to run. Over a short period of time all the good new Salford buses disappeared, and shitty old former manchester buses started to appear on Salford routes. People used to complain of that, and the slightly higher selnec fares. While I agree with Darren that selnec was was better than today, it was no way as good as the old salford buses, run by my good friends at the council.Lets have some more comments about the old green buses. |

| Bring back the orange GM BUSES which were last seen driving around greater Manchester in 1996. To many bus companys like stagecoach, firstbus and diamond buses think profit before people. If we get more buses to more areas not served by the main routes, then we cut pollution because people will use buses, not there cars. Also under a one BIG operator, there will all charge same price. |

| Why just the Busses? the Government are looking to strip Northern Rail of it's franchise and run it themselves. So why not put it under GMCA control as well as Metrolink and have a "Totally Integrated" Transport system ( As in London and many major cities. |
