What was Rock Against Sexism? When did it start? How long did it last? Who was involved? What was it up against? What did it achieve? These questions and more will be answered at the Mary Quaile Club event next Saturday afternoon, 19th October, at the Friends Meeting House in Manchester.
One of the main movers of Rock Against Sexism (RAS) and its mag, Drastic Measures, was Lucy Whitman, then known as Lucy Toothpaste, who first created the feminist, anti-racist, anti-fascist fanzine, JOLT, and also contributed to Rock Against Racism megazine Temporary Hoarding.
At the Mary Quaile event, Lucy will be giving an illustrated history of the movement, setting it in the context of the DIY political and cultural climate of the late 1970s, which saw bands like the Au Pairs, Delta 5, The Raincoats and The Spoilsports take on the establishment and its views .
After RAS, Lucy went on to write regularly for pioneering feminist magazine Spare Rib and is now writing books detailing the lives of elderly people - Telling Tales About Dementia: Experiences of Caring, and People with Dementia Speak Out, are both published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
