OVER ONE THOUSAND ATTEND MANCHESTER PETERLOO MARCH FOR DEMOCRACY AND RALLY

Star date: 18th August 2019 'RISE LIKE LIONS...' Today, well over one thousand people attended the Peterloo Massacre Bicentenary March For Democracy, culminating a rally at Albert Square, Manchester, addressed by, amongst others, MP Chris Williamson, who quoted Shelley's Masque of Anarchy. There were three Salford contingents at the rally, who marched from Swinton, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, and Queen Street. Full details here...

Today began with a large and colourful, mainly anti-fracking and climate change campaign contingent meeting at Salford Museum and Art Gallery to begin their march into Manchester for the Peterloo Massacre Bicentenary rally at Albert Square. Meanwhile, a further trade union march went from Swinton and another Salford Trades Council march began from Queen Street off Blackfriars Road. Other trade union contingents marched from Whitworth Park, Cheetham Hill, East and South Manchester, many with accompanying drum and samba bands. The various legs of the march converged on Albert Square where there was music, performance and speeches conveyed from an open top fire engine provided by the Fire Brigades Union. On the platform, Derby North Labour Party MP, Chris Williamson, who is currently suspended from the party, recalled the original Peterloo campaigners, who were "marching and rallying for democracy, freedom of speech and social justice... "And yes we've made a lot of progress since that time" he added "but freedom of speech, democracy and social justice are under extreme attack in this country and around the world, and that's why solidarity is so crucially important, and why the labour movement needs to stand together; because we are on the cusp of changing the course of history in this country." Referencing the need to get a "socialist" government into 10 Downing Street under Jeremy Corbyn, Williamson said that it will "Bring about a universal shift in the balance of the wealth and power in our country... "We must never let the haters divide us, we must stand in unity and solidarity" he explained, recounting that the fifth leading economy in the world has "people sleeping and dying on the streets...precarious employment is now endemic throughout the land, poverty is on the increase...it's a national scandal that we cannot allow to stand any longer." Stressing that socialists are also internationalists, he added that "We have to stand in solidarity with the Kashmiri people against oppression, we have to stand with the Palestinian people against the apartheid Israeli state, we have to stand with the Latin American people in Venezuela..." He concluded by saying that "despite all the attacks we are on the cusp of making history, we are going to change this country forever and our job is to keep hope alive..." and quoting Shelley's Masque of Anarchy, written in the aftermath of the Peterloo Massacre... | The North West TUC boycotted the Peterloo March and Rally in Albert Square on Sunday 18th August, billed as the 'March for Democracy', because Chris Williams was an invited speaker. Jay McKenna, Acting Regional Secretary of the North West TUC, wrote to the secretary of the GMATUC's, Stefan Cholewka, informing him the NW TUC would be withdrawing from the event. So much for upholding democracy!

Admirable sentiment about the wording and way responses re formed, it is hard sometimes though not to stoop to another's levels.
It is though equally hard to respect the stance of anti fracking demonstrators when you read that climate change activists are being schooled in tactics of non violent protests, what this means in reality is these people are being taught how to break the law without violence, all well and good but when these people are being arrested and sentenced we should applaud the authorities for enforcing the rule of law not bemoan the law being implemented. FWIW I welcome Fracking companies to explore the possibility of obtaining gas from our soil. |

| What's Chris Williamson got to do with Manchester.....or more importantly, Peterloo ? Born in Derby........MP for Derby.....surely there were/ are other Mancunians who are better qualified to speak at the Peterloo Memorial.......or is this just another 'Sound bite politician' eager to get his name in the media since he's been booted out of the 'Palace of Vaudeville' AKA the labour party ? |

| As President of Blackpool Fylde and Wyre Trades Union Council, I was proud to march from Salford with local anti-fracking campaigners. These people have worked hard in our area. Lancashire Council said no to the fracking plans. This was over-ruled from London. We even had three young men sent to prison when protesting over fracking and we were once again proud that we supported the successful campaign to overturn that, which included turning up in large numbers outside Preston prison. The right to protest denied to the original Peterloo campaigners still needs fighting for these days.
We would like to thank those in Manchester and Salford who helped organise the excellent commemoration event over Peterloo last Sunday, and we were pleased to be able to come over and support it from our area.
Lastly, could we advise that attempts to win arguments by posts which include words like "idiots, vile, shower of shite, cranks, shebang, fruitcake, morons, half-wit", are doomed. Few will take you at all seriously, so please re-consider your approach. |

| Williamson is suspended from Labour because he spoke out about the efforts of the Israel lobby to silence any criticism of Israel by Labour MPs or members. I have not seen any credible evidence he is anti-semitic, just repeated slurs all over the media by people like Margaret Hodge and Tom Watson who have their own agenda. People from Jewish Voice for Labour were at the rally, they support Williamson and know the allegations against him for what they are, politically motivated attempts to silence and marginalise an ally of Corbyn and put an end to his "democracy roadshow" events |

The whole Peterloo shebang is just a turn off for ordinary folk .What rational sensible person spends an afternoon listening to a fruitcake like Chris Williamson. There are actually some very pressing issues that ordinary people would like to hear about at the moment and Kashmir, Palestine and Venezuela ain't any of them. | I am a genuine supporter of the Salford Star and value its unbiased honest reporting but I am horrified by the bigoted and ignorant comments made by DJB. I suggest this person starts to find out the truth and enlightens his understanding. Those attending this event were genuine, concerned and progressive thinkers, worried about attacks on demoncracy. |
